The one good thing about Monday mornings, a new video from Brief Case! Thank you for the upload! I feel bad for Charlotte and although she had an affair it was over by the time her husband died. She had no motive for killing him and his death meant she went to the workhouse, which were horrendous places. Why would she have done it? Was he abusive? Was he having an affair with their border Lucy? There is something fishy about this case. And I feel badly for her 5 children who lost both parents thanks to the death penalty.
@helencheadle52853 жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed that story BC, but felt sorry for her in a way...shame that a retrial wasn’t allowed after that Professor gave his input. That said, there was no denying poor Frederick died of arsenic poisoning- no getting away when grains were found during his PM. But not enough digging for info about Lucy...when SHE apparently gave F his drink one evening. What did her husband die from ? And why the mad rush to move in with her 7. Children, when the cottage was already too small. Poor Frederick, it must have been hell on Earth sharing a cottage with 2 women and 11 children! No mention of rent, so quite ridiculous. Thankyou for sharing BC! You do find some good stories to tell us, and good work finding the old photos of relevant people to illustrate it all.🙋♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😘☕️☕️👍x

You will notice that on these videos, female killers garner more sympathy and get the benefit of the doubt from commenters than their male counterparts. @lloydchristmas45473 жыл бұрын
@@mikesanders8621 I get it, but not always the case. I can imagine a jury would be more willing to convict a woman if they thought she was infidel.
@Adoozyofaday3 жыл бұрын
I just felt like it was presented as a bit sympathetic for her. Like she was somehow being harshly misjudged or her behavior was unjustly frowned upon. But then makes it seem like her affair was an open secret. Maybe people felt that way because that is, in fact, what she was doing. All while her husband provided for her and the children. It says nothing of him being abusive or unfaithful. It sounds like he even took her back after she abandoned him and some of the children. I can't say that I know for sure she killed him, although I wouldn't be surprised. There are many cases from this time period of both men AND women poisonors. It seemed to be popular among both sexes. I would feel badly if I knew she was innocent and had been wrongly executed, regardless of her fidelity. I just thought it was bit weird that I was supposed to feel badly for her that people disapproved of her being unfaithful to her husband.

It is only at this point in my life that I am realizing just how common arsenic was in people's lives. It seems to have been as necessary as flour, sugar, or any other staple. We have all been tired, we have all grabbed the salt instead of the sugar...
@bunnymad50493 жыл бұрын
Interesting point. I haven't grabbed salt instead of sugar when tired, but only because of packaging - and, if memory serves, poisons were not packaged very differently in those days? Many people did seem to keep it in the same place, didn't they?

I don't see how she was found guilty - it was not even even circumstancial evidence, it was her word against Lucy's who did what, with zero corroborating evidence. Charlotte could have offed her husband in hope that her lover would return, Lucy could have offed him so that he didn't kick her out of the cottage, and then framed Charlotte when the poisoning was discovered. What I find strange is the timing of poor Frederick's murder - why get rid of the breadwinner only after your affair is over?Those two times when Frederick recovered from his illness while the affair was ongoing, what was stopping her from giving him a bigger dose? He had already been ill, his death would have come over as natural. It really doesn't make sense to me, makes me lean towards Lucy as the culprit.
@jebvoorhees1253 жыл бұрын
It's really not that tough to figure out. She prepared all the man's meals and he was poisoned to death. Police find the substance in the fireplace and inside her clothing. She married a older man that she wanted to replace. She likely blamed the husband when the boyfriend skipped town so she poisoned him in hopes he'd come back. Just my opinion.

This was the first episode, aired in 2018 and was at the request of one of Charlotte's descendants. The case was reviewed by two barristers, one who represented the defence and the other the prosecution, and the evidence presented to a judge; in this case the conviction was upheld. Overall it was a fascinating series by the BBC.

Hmm, I would question any "confession" given after the person had been in police custody for more than a few hours in those days... beatings and intimidating suspects and witnesses were the norm. Whatever happened, it's sad all the way around. Thanks for the video!

Hi Brief Case, love your channel and always find your stories very interesting...................have to say, as a native of Yeovil this one was particularly good! Never heard this case before. Thanks!

This is one case where I think life in prison would have been better. The poor children involved - dead father and executed mother, so sad!

Used to live in the same house she “murdered” him. From looking at the old pics from the crime scene the house hadn’t changed at all

Eerie but a lot of people occupy old places of yesteryear and I find it fascinating, the legend that goes with the property. We bought a house at one time and with it two big barn sheds . Neighbors and a co-worker told me the owner committed suicide in one of the sheds . 😮

I think she did it ....... what I have noticed with all the cases I've listened to,poisonings are always linked to stomach pain. Wonder why she did it ??? 🤔 Very good story telling BC I love your voice 🥰

Why is it in this particular case, I feel Mr Bryant made himself sick, then Lucy killed him? I can't explain why I feel odd about this case.

So Some people think she was guilty because she was a loose woman hmm how SAD some still think the way TODAY..
@neneshubby3 жыл бұрын
She was a ‘loose woman’. She cheated on her hard working husband and then brought in some woman with 7 kids into his house while he worked and then he gets poisoned by one or both of them and dies in agony. How about some sympathy for him?
@PatriciaPageMosaicArtsCrafts3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Terry, there is great room for doubt in this case, doesent matter if she was loose or not.

Could have been new tenant BUT unlikely. Seems Charlotte done it a few times before fatal dosage (when with Leonard). Suspect Charlotte and new tenant got their head together and did it. Charlotte was only person to prepare meals for hubby. Wouldn't be surprised if Lucy - who possibly killed her own husband 4 years before, brought poison to house. To save her butt - Lucy accused Charlotte. Ultimately I think Charlotte and Lucy conspired together.

The one good thing about Monday, it's also Brief Case Day! It is sad to hear stories of women who are so desperate to get a new life, that they see murder as their only way to it. What a shame for the children. As usual, nice to see you BC, love the photos and details you share. Stay safe & well.
