What they meant by Sebastian starving is that he hasn't eaten a soul since signing a contract with Ciel because he's basically raising Ciel's soul like a pig for slaughter. Even though he kills people, he doesn't devour them because doing that would be like eating candy before the main course, it would ruin his appetite and spoil the flavour of anticipation. Sebastian is here to help Ciel, but only so he can basically ensure Ciel marinades in so much bitterness and hatred that he ends up being super delicious once their deal comes to an end.

Yes, agreed. Except Ciel was already full of bitterness and hatred to begin with, so I wonder if the soul tastes better when its wish has come true. We're never fully explained what makes a soul delicious to a demon. I have a theory that a soul freely given without any regrets makes it delicious.

The best part about Sebastian and Ciel manipulating each other to me is they both know it. They’re both forced into this partnership so they might as well have fun. It’s that toxic business relationship they have which makes them work so well together as a team.

They skipped the chapter where they showed this in the anime but Ciel is actually a skilled marksman. Able compete on horseback in hunting competitions with his professional athlete aunt Frances to a draw. He’s also able to speak multiple languages. Sebastian can do way more obviously but it goes to show how much Ciel is downplayed in the anime.

The writing is better, you're not imagining things. We didn't ask you to skip to the canon only stuff just because of the animation. Personally, I was scared you'd end up dropping it because of how stupid the non canon stuff it. That being said, the thing at the end about Ciel, this wasn't him being mortified and mad about it, but more of a ... Let's say, trauma response. Sebatian is taunting Ciel because the kid is letting the probable flashbacks he's getting actually affect him like, you know, it would a normal person. It's things like this that makes me enjoy how very awful Sebatian is, more than the mindless violence, just the absolutely casual cruelty.

yea, every part of ciel's personality is influenced with trauma at this point. Also, the writing is better, especially since the anime did not elongate the manga as it was supposed to so it made it seem a bit worse than it actually is. I still happen to enjoy every episode in it's own memish way though. Can't help myself.

That's what I was thinking too. The manga makes Ciel much more relatable. Like you understand his reactions more. It makes sense that in the anime he comes off as more of a brat when they don't explain some of what's happening. Not that he isn't still a brat, but he's much more palatable as a character and more well rounded.

Just when you think you have the full grasp of it, another layer is revealed over and over till the big twist which hasn’t been animated yet. Basically all that’s been shown in the anime to the point of what Danny has watched so far is Ciel made a deal with a demon after something traumatic happened but season one doesn’t even show it correctly (I.e Ciel was never floating naked in a void and Sebastian was never a raven).

@@francescawhite4166 Well some of his backstory is revealed in the end of book of circus. But the totally messed up and major plot twist comes around the blue cult ark which is chapter 108-129. Since we ended on book of Atlantic (luxury liner arc), the soon coming season four, starts on either the end of the the luxury liner arc, or with the public school arc, which covers chapters 67-85. So we still have at the very least 3 seasons, not including future fillers that they might do, till his full backstory that's in the manga.

I'm not sure you picked up on this (and its harder to tell as season 1 changes the ciel sebastien dynamic just enough), but Sebastien is very manipulative, especially in these two episodes. He courses ciel into acting a certain way. He mocks him openly whenever Ciel is weak under fake concern whenever Ciel acts like a child. Ciel is traumatized. You can see that when he runs away after his branding was shown to someone else, and Sebastien just mocks him saying "I never thought you were so weak?"

Fr they have a horrible and cruel dynamic that is hidden from the other characters. Ciel's crazy orders (notably in the Murder Mystery arc) are like a weak attempt at trying to hurt Sebastian, a protest against his own weakness and terror. I haven't seen most fans realize this though, very happy to see so many in this comments section.

@@worm2976 I don't think alot of people understand the true depth of black butler, and the fact that it is a gothic horror show, and it is so much deeper than it appears to be. It gets darker and darker as it goes along, which I think is actually quite symbolic, bc it most definitely will end with Ciels death. Just the fact that it gets darker, shows how Sebastian is overpowering Ciel as the time goes along, revving him up and manipulating him to make him more traumatised so then when he finally does eat his soul, it is exactly what Sebastian wants. It's so sad and soo good.

And Ciel is just a kid who's not even 16 years old, but he knows more than the average college student. And he only managed to survive at the age of eight and make a contract with a demon who planned to kill him in the same second, bypassing the contract

Some people say these two arcs will be animated together because there's no clear line that ends one and starts the other, so if they do that it'll be in 3 seasons, while if they separate them it will be in 4 seasons💔

About the writing (which improves over time in the manga), it's worse in the anime, because even the canon episodes suffered alterations in the first season. Like that horrendous cursed spice plot point in the Curry Arc. But when the "Books" begin, it's almost all manga contente, which is actually pretty good.

I also prefer the subbed version. Ciel is voiced better, less haughty and arrogant sounding. Plus, Sebastian in the sub sounds so cocky, confident and teasing. The balance is better between Ciel and Sebastian with the Japanese audio.

But I don't like Sebastian's english VA. He doesn't sound teasing and cocky the way he should. He sounds like an actual boring butler instead of the demon he is, a demon playing a game. Plus, everyone else has these terrible goofy accents which makes the anime lose some of its seriousness. I'm not a fan of that.

There is a reason why we tell you to skip. Because season 1 and 2 have definitive endings and its impossible for season 3 to exist without erasing those endings entirely. It's easier to not have to explain what to take as canon going into season 3 with doing the episodes we told you than to go through 1 and 2 in its entirety and try to remember specific episodes of what is supposed to be taken as canon. Like in season 3. Angela and Pluto does not exist. Anything related to them does not exist. When you go back to season 1 and 2, you'll see how disconnected season 3 is.
