(You can see them for 20 sec in an old movie called Sally the sawdust, with W.B Fields) Then as he got older & got into an Argument with his half brothers & my grandmother thought he was messing around with a woman, he became a clown along with my grandmother & used his bio- father's last name Ragone(my grandfather's first was Michael Ferraro then change to Michael Ragone & my Grandmother's was Jennie) I have news article clippings I have his diary, I have posters, I have pictures. Italian immigrants he and his brothers joined not because they wanted to but because they wanted to eat. He was in his teens. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this channel! I loved the circus as a child and even when my children were little. Then I began to read about it and learn the horrific exploitation that went on. I will never forget the night I was pumping gas in rural Virginia and saw the Ringling Bros. train pass on its last voyage. I just stood there and cried for all the people and animals who fell victim to the "Darkest Show on Earth."

My Great Grandmother's parents came from the circus (P.T.'S) and she (My Great Gma) used to tell us kids horror stories from how the circus used to be in the early 1900's. The toxic atmosphere and the abuse of EVERYONE involved is why my early family left after being a part of it for 3 generations. Yes, I came from the circus, lol...

Also, please please do an episode on "freak shows", there's a lot to unpack there. If my son had been born 130 years ago, he would have been in one, namely Couney's Premature Baby Attraction at Couney Island.
@BeccaAnne8252 жыл бұрын
@@Adanielle21 I know that. My son was born preemie, and I read "the strange case of Dr Couney", the book all about the incubator side shows. I know that many babies were saved, I was merely suggesting a topic for her to do a video on.

@@gnostic268 my parents had a farm; 365 acres of lush clover with the best barns, fans for every horse, too quality feed, etc. There was a circus (not naming here due to internet trolls) that had white horses for summer, black for winter. Each string only worked 6 months of the year. The other 6 months they paid to board them with us! These animals were loved, obviously well trained, and treated really well. Better than most people treat their kids. My parents also boarded horses for the big hospital CEOs, the wife of a big real estate mogul, pet pony of the mayor’s son, etc. The circus folk made sure their animals got the same top notch care that the big wigs did. I doubt they abused the heck out of them for 6 months just to turn around and pay for 6 months at the spa. And they always came to us with neatly trimmed feet, no scabs or scars, bright and happy.

@@lindseyt240 That’s the difference. Your parents weren’t doing it to make obscene money at the cost of human and animal lives. Their animals were well treated and loved on. This company treated their animals horribly. Your parents sound like an actual even t I would be willing to support.

My grandparents took us as kids to the huge Barnum and Bailey's 3 ring circus and we were mezmerized. This would've been back in the 70's before the negative info came out about circuses, but with child eyes, it was fascinating. My mom also trained as one of those ladies who spun from her neck on a suspended rope. There is a Circus World Museum in Wisconsin that she is in pics somewhere. Knowing what I know now, it makes those memories sad, though my grandparents never had any ill intent. At least we are becoming better with knowledge and learning.

In the beginning, Bailey was talking about a military group that rides horses. Her fun pronunciation said “Calvary”. The correct word for mounted troops is “Cavalry”. “Calvary” refers to Jesus’s death location, which means “skull rock”. When she said “Juggling for Jesus”, I laughed at the Unexpected connection to Calvary.

Hartford, CT. The day the clowns cried. Every year on the anniversary the media still covers it. There was one little girl who wasn’t identified until a few years ago and that identity is still debated. Little Miss 1565. Very sad story about body identification back then. I keep remembering things. There still is a Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT. I came upon it when I got to a concert venue early and walked around a few streets. It was closed. The actor and perpetual game show guest, Charles Nelson Reilly, was in the fire at age 13. His description of the events and how certain places bring back that day sound like PTSD. He was once on the Merv Griffin talk show, I watched every day after school (Yes, I am that old.) and Merv asked him if he was popular in high school. He said no. He lost the lead in the school play to Harold Portner. Merv asked, “And where is HE now?” Well, I knew. He was our high school music teacher! I live just south of Hartford.

The circus side shows and outrageous claims they made reminds me of the saying “there’s a sucker born every minute.” That’s still true today. And why am I not surprised that circus conmen ended up in Congress? And oh yes, you know lobbyists line the pockets of lawmakers so they will vote to maintain the status quo of corrupt businesses. Hence laws being lenient and looking the other way with animal abuse. And those who refuse to be bribed…well the lobbyists give large donations to the campaign of a more agreeable competitor who’s running against you, or just take out ads to drown out your campaign. Basically they go to war against you. We need to get the money out of politics, because power and money corrupts totally. Always has, always will.
