Here's the thing, People say she was wrong for working in a maternity hospital knowing she was suspected to be a carrier. The thing is if you put historical context into play she was an Irish Immigrant woman in USA she probably believed that they were purposely targeting her or these reasons and she was healthy. I'm sure there are Irish people out there from that era who would be sure she wasn't a carrier but a victim of Xenophobia

The realisation that she was a carrier of disease must have been appalling to her. But when faced with homelessness and starvation, or continue working to survive, well that's a difficult choice. It's probably right what you say about her being female. But also I think if she'd have played along with Dr Soper from the start there might have been a happier outcome. Poor Mary 😷🤒🥺

Oh Bailey, I LOVE YOU! 😂 You always manage to make me laugh when I'm depressed and this time it came right at the end when you said you confused Helen Keller with Lizzy Borden! 🤣💀 The image popped into my head and I just cackled while thinking "PLEASE NEVER CHANGE!" Really though, your little quirks are one of the coolest things about you! ❤

There were SIX youtube ads in this presentation! I listen to your sponsors diligently. Why are there additional ones? Enjoy your channel every time you posts otherwise. Thank you for detailed and informative presentations 😊

right? the ads she does for her sponsors i don't really mind. but why are there youtube ads right after them as well. it's starting to get annoying

don't think she can control that. Get an ad blocker

I noticed over the past week or so that creators who never had ads now have a BUNCH of them. Some videos even within the first minute. I'm sure it's a KZbin change since it happened to so many channels I follow. Really frustrating and I hope more people complain so YT backs off.

Awesome episode as usual Bailey, I also read Anthony Bourdain's book and loved it. He's very human and compassionate about Mary's situation.

Bailey! Can you do a Dark History on the meat packing industry in the early 1900s and the book written about it The Jingle!?

As a meat cutter, I would find that very interesting

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair! One of my favorite books in high school! It’s so sad 😢

@ yes that one! I heard that he got a job at a meat packing plant to see how things really were to write the book. It’s fiction but based on what he saw while he worked there. The book inspired the establishment of the FDA. I read it in HS too!

Hey Bailey it would be awesome if you could show your tattoos. I can see some, and just curious what other ones you have!! You're amazing thanks for going down the rabbit hole for us so we don't have to!!❤

Wow! I always thought she did it on purpose... the more you know! Its so sad she had to live a life of isolation.Thanks for another Dark History Bailey ❤

I just lose any sympathy for her when she absolutely refused to listen to health professionals and then went right back to working with food in a maternity/childrens ward KNOWING she had spread typhoid previously to a young girl who passed. I do think it was unfair to completely isolate her but when they did try to give her lenience and let her live she put more people in danger. I don’t understand why she wouldn’t even take preventative measures? If there was even a possibility I was spreading a possibly deadly disease I would willingly do what was necessary. I mean she must’ve noticed a pattern with her employers falling sick which is why she’d up and disappear/leave any time it happened.

It's like her determination to support herself went too far into something pathological. But for someone in that era with little education, germ theory and extreme sanitation (150° water?) and the whole idea she could carry something and not be sick herself, it was a big ask.
@lesliecampbell465718 күн бұрын
@ I feel like she was just looking for ways to say “see look I’m not sick!”. It didn’t matter to her how many stool samples came back positive for typhoid she hinged her beliefs on the sporadic negative samples. I mean if the pattern was enough for a random doctor to notice then there’s no way she couldn’t see that everywhere she went she was followed by it. There’s being uneducated on certain things and then there’s being willfully ignorant and I feel like she falls closer to willfully ignorant then she does uneducated; she had doctors explaining things to her and assisting her in ways a normal person at her time wouldn’t have.
