Eh, to be honest... I don't think it would have ended well if when he first met Alina he told her who he really was. You have to remember from the fountain scene that all Alina knows about "The Black Heretic" is what history books said and history is written by the winners. If he told her who he was she would have believed what she knew the story to be true that he just wanted power and got greedy, not that humans started hunting Grisha because they were afraid of them for no reason.

He’s more like a twisted failed hero than a villain. He actually thinks that he handled his circumstances in the right way, and he has his reasons to fight, but his ways are just wrong. I hope they could dig a little more into that in the future, making him more of a complex character than just a villain, not just black or white cuz as far as I know, and as we’ve seen in the series, he’s more decent than in the books, which gives him the opportunity to make him a more complete and grey character

From my pov I think it would be better for her to end up alone in the show. I try to portrayed her with both Aleksander and Mal but none of them is really good for her as person. Darkling could manage to love her fully as a person but would remain a little toxicity here than idk how the producers will handle with. About Mal, as you said, he is more like a brother and old childhoold friend than a true potential lover. In the books, for me was a little creepy when she burst in tears over the Darkling s death body after she killed him, like, why you did it after all? She had some bipolarity in the books that I hope they will not bring in the show too.

He was willing to leave if that meant she lived her best life, what more do you from the man? I always agreed with the sentiment that if you love someone you have to be willing to let them go. The Darkling would never give up his power, Nikolai would never give up his kingdom, but Mal would give up ANYTHING for Alina

Respectfully, I would argue that in a way, the darkling would also give up himself for alina, in his own way. Like u said, nikolai had his kingdom, the darkling had his powers, but mal would give up anything for alina, but what exactly does he have besides alina to lose? This is reeeaaalllyyy seen in the show, but his only personality trait IS alina haha. Again, respectfully, I think Mal has his strengths and he is a good guy, but idk, he was not that compelling of a character to me. That being said, the darkling did actually give up everything for alina, at least in my opinion. In the end, he died because alina stabbed him in the heart. But how is it possible, that this centuries year old man, who has survived countless attacks, been in multiple wars, and survived the fold and came out stronger, to have died by the hands of a 16/17 year old?? The answer to that question is that he didn't. When he saw that alina lost her powers, he realized he was all alone, and that put out any hope he had - frankly he just gave up and became vulnerable enough for alina to kill him. Its more prominent in the show, but he always believed that he and alina had eternity together, and that one day she would come to understand him, even if today she hated him. He didn't think he had to give up power to be with alina, he thought that they could be powerful together! But thats why it hits so hard that alina lost her powers because even though TD could easily survive this attack, in the end.... he just didn't want to. He didn't want to be alone anymore and it wasn't worth it to keep fighting if alina wasn't with him. So he died. He gave up his ambitions and power because his hope died that day. Sorry for the long response 😅. Of course, this is just how I interpret this very complex character.

He did it because he no longer had all of time to bend her to his will as he always planned. Well I'm not arguing about whether or not the Darkling is a fit love interest, that would be ridiculous seeing as he is manipulative, lies constantly and has the ultimate goal of isolating Alina from everyone else she cares about using MURDER when he deems it necessary. I know it's sounds cliché but that is a textbook case of obsession, not love. "....what does Mal have to lose?" He doesn't have any material things, he's therefore not worthy of loving and being loved? "He's only personality trait is Alina" I disagree. He has many traits, the most admirable one is loyalty.

What I meant was he is extremely seductive and intense, not to mention good looking, so I can easily see her developing a crush, when a guy as charismatic and attractive as him is giving her these kinds of looks + scenes. I was in no way reflecting on her acting, just his seductiveness. I've seen multiple female fans describing that some scenes got them actually pregnant. :)

@@bojanbrkic863 but he's not being seductive to her, it's just a scene. a scene from a script that is being acted in front of a whole film crew. i mean, it's fine if a lot of fans are completely head over heels for this guy, but it's one thing to have a celebrity crush and another to know someone as a person and work together. i know she could technically have a crush on him (since none of us know what goes through her head), but it's weird to be pretty sure or assume it could easily be the case because ben barnes is a good actor and they're doing an intense love scene together.
