On 30 January 1965, Britain's wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill was buried after a full state funeral.
His granddaughter, Emma Soames, was just 14 years old at the time and remembers the day vividly.
Witness is a World Service radio programme of the stories of our times told by the people who were there.

The funeral was on a cold Saturday morning here in US. My dad made me get up as there were no reruns back then. When the cranes lowered, none of us could speak. It would not do for males to be seeing crying then, so he and I turned our faces to the wall.

I was 30 and preparing to migrate to New Zealand later in the year, but I just had to travel into London from Woking Surrey, to farewell and say thank you, to the Old Warrior. A man of many faults and Imperialistic in the whole fibre of his being, but stalwart and standing firm when we needed a Leader. I still feel an emotion and pride when listening to his speeches. He gave us backbone and spirit during those dark, early, desperate days and for that, I had to be present and salute him as his cortege passed me. I stood near St. Paul's on a bitter January day and watched the procession slowly approach. Many memories came into my mind and although I felt sad, I also felt we'd shared destiny together and to be there was a fitting end to a part of history and a tribute to a man of his time. When my generation passes, there will only be films and history books of those days, but for me it is still real and will only fade at my death. I feel privileged to have lived then and now.
