I think I just understood something about Batman I didn't get before. When Batman says he's "busy" when you're asking for his help with a massive issue that seems way more important than whatever serial killer he's dealing with this week, it's because he has complete faith you're going to deal with that without him while he's where he's needed most, even if you aren't that confident in yourself. Batman's massive confidence extends to anyone he respects as an equal or at least respectable colleague, so long as they're staying in their lane.
@raymondfisheriii7912 жыл бұрын
In other words, Batman saying “he’s busy” is less him saying “do it yourself”, and more him saying “bro, you’ve got this” unless he was outright saying “no, do that on your own. I don’t agree with it”

I always liked the idea that Lois was Bruce's best friend. They only saw each other occasionally for a few minutes at a time. But she knew who he was, who he really was and treated him like one of the army guys she grew up around. But she wasn't romantically interested in him, because she would never be as important as his crusade.

Personally, I would like that. Lois was a very enjoyable character in the DCAU but I feel like they didn't utilize Lois's presence as well as I'd have liked. She fell by the wayside after STAS and I was kind of dying to know if or when Lois would have ended up with Clark.

The DC strict character embargo's did so much damage to the creativity across multiple shows. I remember watching the shows and reading the tie-in comics when it was going on and it was a mess; and it's STILL complicated to explain to my buddy who was unaware of it because he'd ask, "Yeah, but why would they do that? It's still WB and DC. THEY OWN THE CHARACTERS!!!" and all I can say is, "I KNOW, but I guess they think the audience is too dumb to see more than one superhero show, both with Batman, and yet the villains are off limits." I still think the embargo complicated things for the worse. Teen Titans couldn't use Wonder Girl, JLU couldn't use Bat-villains, The Batman for a while wasn't allowed to use Robin (due to Teen Titans) and instead introduced Batgirl first (not a bad move, but I remember it making people scratch their heads), and IIRC Aquaman villains weren't able to be used in JLU because the failed Aquaman (Smallville spinoff) pilot that the WB network wanted to do.
@dcauwatchtower4 жыл бұрын
Not Aquaman himself after a while!
@Nightman221k4 жыл бұрын
@@dcauwatchtower It's so weird that they used to think that. Funny enough, currently embargos seem to be a thing of the past. It still makes me laugh how the HBO Max Harley Quinn's not exactly kid friendly, while DC Superhero Girls' Harley is kid-friendly and childlike. I wouldn't want either show to remove Harley, but it seems like a bigger dissonance for kids who get into the DC Superhero Girls cartoons, think of Harley as their favorite character, and assume her personality would be similar in a cartoon show that's all about her.
@Nightman221k4 жыл бұрын
@Will N I actually agree with you about the Bat-villains. I feel like one minor complaint I have about the DCAU is that Batman often has the spotlight in JL/JLU because the creative team just thought he was more cool than the other characters. I like Batman too, but you're right if his villains showed up it would have definitely overshadowed the badguys in the last season. I do feel like the biggest loss was not getting to see the birds of prey as it was conceptualized and maybe Robin, Batgirl, and Nightwing showing up just to be part of the league.
@thebunkerparodie63684 жыл бұрын
@@Nightman221k also was shown to be a sympathetic villain in batman TAS with her being able to reform in harley holiday (and didn't seem to want to go back to crime in lock up) ,but then for some reason the writter decided to tie her to a statu quo with either being with ivy or joker after batman TAS and they stopped making harley willing to reform when to me a reform DCAU harley could have been interesting to see (+I feel like making harley go worst without explaining the how and why is somewhat lazy character development and they never explained why did harley go back to crime with ivy in holiday knight). Also I don't think it's a problem to ahve multiple interpretaiton of a character (although I must say that I like harley more when she's a sympathetic villain than a as bad as joker villain)
@Nightman221k4 жыл бұрын
@@thebunkerparodie6368 Me too, 100%. I like the BTAS Harley but Timm and Dini kind of ruined any of her early appearances for me when they had her help the Joker break Robin's mind. It makes her heartfelt, "Nice guy's like you shouldn't have bad days," look pretty damn pointless when she would later destroy all that Batman held dear when mindbreaking Tim destroyed what was left of his family and support system and scarred his son mentally for years. He gave her compassion and she helped Joker ruined his life and we get nothing to imply she gave it a second thought. Personally, I think Harley of BTAS becoming an ally to Batman would have been a perfect full circle for her character, since having her be a domestic abuse victim should be a *cautionary tale*; rather than just her default status quo which is how she was made to be in BTAS/TNBA. When you look at Mad Love's ending and how it romanticizes Harley's mental condition at the last minute with her instantly forgiving the Joker like it's just status quo for her and she likes it, is probably why edgy teens idealize the Harley/Joker "romance." I for one love that modern Harley has become independent and has grown. I'd prefer her to be an anti-hero like Catwoman more than a full on villain TBH though.

I know that Dan Slott said that Red Hood would be Andrea's mother... but I still feel like thematically it would be so much more exciting were it Andrea's father since he was shown to be murdered in Phantasm... BUT we never actually see the body just Andrea's horrified scream and she recounts the information that he was killed. If he were left nearly dead or brain-damaged and Andrea forged an alliance with Ra's to use a Lazarus pit to revive him I feel like it would make more sense than having Andi's mother whose grave she was talking to earnestly (I feel like her doing it and genuinely forming the bond with Bruce was thematically important). His death being confirmed only by Andi, who was covering it up pretending he was alive, makes him faking his death or never having died seem like a twist that would have felt in line with the Phantasm movie.

I gotta correct you on something at 8m12s, though, Mattie-- the writer of Batman Adventures #17 was not Dan Slott, but Ty "The Guy" Templeton himself. I always thought it was fitting Ty close out that volume (and era) of the Batman Adventures, given how synonymous he'd become with the various incarnations of the series. Regardless, though, great vid! Comic Book Legends Revealed had divulged the Red Hood’s identity back in the day, but I always avoided reading it, just in case Ty and Dan ever got the chance to finish the story somehow. Seeing the WDb finally cover the topic made me realize it was time to peek, and it did not disappoint! Loved the info for all the other arcs/stories, too; I was a big fan of this series and it did me good to finally see what could have been. So many, many thanks!

I vehemently detest the quote unquote “Bat-Embargo”, it’s the reason what’s been holding back certain shows (and comics) from having a certain character or have said character be the central focus of said show. It’s also the reason why we can never have a live action Batman series for that dumb reason alone, and why we have some shows like Batwoman and the other show premiering next year… Gotham Knights that has *ZERO* focus on the titular Caped Crusader. Just give us a great Batman live action series, we’ll not be confused just because you’re doing some new Batman movies.

It’s possible, but there’s not really anything to go off of other than “Bruce Timm made this and it’s in his art style.” They reuse the character design of a Wiccan woman who appeared in “Superman: The Animated Series,” so that timeline definitely doesn’t line up (unless she truly is supernatural-but I think she dies in the short?). I legitimately think the continuation run at times handled continuing storylines even better than the animated series (Not the fault of the BTAS series writers, but it aired at a time where syndication was emphasized making it so any kid could jump in to any non-two part episode and not feel completely lost, rather than an unfolding narrative).

I never understood the point of the "Bat-embargo." The idea that the fans weren't savvy enough to figure out that there could be different universes is ridiculous. I hated it because we never got to see characters such as Catwoman in JLU which in my opinion could have been awesome. On the other hand, I believe it was the reason the Joker was kept out of JLU which was great. He'd been (and still is, in my opinion) overdone. I didn't realize the "Bat-embargo" involved other TV projects. I thought it was because of movie projects that were in the works at the time, such as Batman Begins.

@prometheusmodelow83223 жыл бұрын
YES, i wish the Bruce and Babs thing wasn't cut out, as that sounds like a much more accurate depiction of the relationship from what is described in the actual show, i feel that way the pairing would not get as much hate as it does now thanks to the horrible representation of it in Beyond 2.0 and Killing Joke.

Dan Slott's "Marvel Method" episode on Disney+ makes me wonder if he'd have become a writing icon if he had stayed at DC considering he wrote top-tier storylines in the Batman Adventures Vol. 2; rather than how apparently at Marvel he just gives a vague outline of events to the artists then focuses on tweeting without doing much actual writing while everyone picks up his slack (and even then at Marvel he's more infamous than well liked by readers, especially his Spidey stuff, wooof!). I mean he was SO good at Batman Adventures. I bought all the single issues when I was in high school and read them like it was an addiction because the stories were just that damn good and it was just 17 issues.

Thanks for this video! Your discussion of Mr. Freeze in this video prompted me to think about some creative decisions that were made in the DCAU and its tie-in materials and my thoughts on them which will probably be unpopular opinions. A lot of people don't seem to like the direction Mr. Freeze went past BTAS. However to me, it was the Sub-Zero movie that soured me on the character due to that movie's mishandling of him. Sub-Zero feels like a mediocre episode of BTAS that got stretched to animated movie length. For a movie dedicated about Mr. Freeze and his devotion to his wife, the creative team really missed an opportunity for some flashback sequences between Victor and Nora to help flesh out their relationship. We could have gotten into Freeze's head more and showed just why he was so devoted into saving his wife. I think this should have taken a cue from the BTAS episode "It's Never Too Late" and have the story focus almost exclusively on him. What really hurts the movie Sub-Zero is that unlike Arnold Stromwell from the episode "It's Never Too Late" Mr. Freeze is a static character in this movie. He's never really brought to a place where he has to question his morally reprehensible actions, he kills the entire crew of a submarine for accidentally shattering the capsule his wife was in, and he's always fine with the idea of killing a girl to save his wife. There are really no consequences to his actions save a broken leg and the knowledge that he won't be with his newly revived wife, but it isn't enough for me. Mr. Freeze should have received more comeuppance for his actions in this movie and should have ended up in jail by the end of it. Mr. Freeze's horrific plan still lead to his ultimate goal, and since he doesn't have the knowledge that Bruce Wayne is Batman, he's probably giving himself more credit than he deserves. By the ending of this movie, Mr. Freeze doesn't seem to have a problem with anything he did and feels further justified in his actions because he got what he wanted from it. I know Mr. Freeze is one of Batman's more sympathetic villains, but that sympathy can only go so far. The story even gives the young kid Koonak as a companion for Freeze, but this friendship isn't developed that much which makes it ring hollow to me. The ending of this movie, in and of itself, is a touching and poignant moment, but the lack of overall consequences for Freeze just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. Elderly Bruce Wayne's attitude towards Freeze in Batman Beyond is my attitude towards him from this movie onwards in the DCAU. This is actually why I'm not too bothered by what happened to him in TNBA and BTAC. Karma finally came back to bite him worse than ever. Mr. Freeze's condition got even worse reducing him to just a head to save himself and Nora died anyway. I'm not shedding tears since he inflicted or planned and intended to inflict tragedy and pain that was worse than what Nora suffered. Nora at least had a chance to come back, but the people on the submarine don't. I bet their friends and family are devastated as to what happened to them. Heck, that actually sounds like a great idea for an episode. Have someone try to kill Mr. Freeze and seems to have an unusual amount of knowledge about him as well as using similar cold technology to him. When the killer is finally caught, it is revealed to be someone related to one of the people on the submarine he killed. The person could be Dora Smithy who is Nora's sister, and one of the people Freeze killed on the submarine was her husband. This could lead to a moment where Freeze is called out for his actions in the movie. He may have been sympathetic once, but his gruesome acts during it led him to becoming someone like Ferris Boyle, Grant Walker, and Gregory Belson and no longer deserving of nearly the amount of sympathy he once had. Now, I believe it is time to address the big elephant in the room: Nora Fries. I actually agree with Bruce Timm on this one. Nora Fries should be dead. The parallel to Batman is muddled and not as effective if the person affected in Freeze's equivalent to Batman's tragedy is still alive, even if in a frozen state. Sub-Zero would have been a far better movie if we could get into Freeze's head more, not have him commit horrible acts, overlook them, and eventually reward him for it. In an alternate version of Sub-Zero I would have preferred a story that kept these criticisms in mind like the following: Freeze believes he can revive Nora somehow, but he has to do acts that harm innocent people to get it done. During the process, he sees happy couples together which reminds him of his time with Nora. Cue the flashbacks showing Victor and Nora's first meeting, their relationship growing, their marriage, and the tragedy that befalls both Nora and Victor. This causes Freeze to doubt his goals and his conscience to emerge. His conscience comes in the form of Nora before tragedy hit her who urges him to accept that he can't change his tragic life and and accept that she is dead. Freeze knows this is but is in denial. His actions eventually attract the attention of Batman who pleads with him to stop. Freeze continues on until he almost destroys Nora's capsule. After looking at the corpse for some time and realizing that he almost ruined Nora's corpse, Freeze gives up and surrenders, but pleads with Batman to help him give Nora a proper burial. Batman does so and with some convincing to Commissioner Gordon, Freeze is able to attend Nora's funeral but is in restraints and accompanied by a very heavy police presence with Batman there as well. After Freeze's has closure, he's escorted into a police vehicle to be put back into his cell. Batman looks on and hopes that one Victor will be able to move on.

See, I would've been fine if all of your points were actually addressed in B:TAC, but unfortunately it's just a cynical ploy to bring Freeze back to status quo, rather than true karma for his actions (that was more of his fate in Beyond) and it keeps Nora as some prop rather than a proper character. It's not like Freeze got a happy ending in Batman Adventures anyway. He's still Powers's property by the end and still denied Nora. Also, Batman kicking around Nora's corpse like he did in that comic has no excuse.

Also according to wikipedia Lucius Fox would have also been connected to the redhood storyline. I find that idea interesting because it may have given us more insights into why Dereck Powers eventually fired Fox which led to the creation of Foxteca. I assume that Lucius or his son would become a potential redhood candidate in the eyes of batman which would in turn create a wedge that allowed the powers to corner an isolated bruce wayne who isolated all his allies.

@@mattiesavannahpahl9934 I found the quote wikipedia is referring to. The full fantastic four interview on marvel toonzone is no longer be accessible but i found the quote about lucius and the valestra mob on this page :animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/batman-adventures-dangling-plots.4400671/ And here is the full quote : MAA: So who was the Red Hood in Batman Adventures? The world and Ed really want to know! Slott: I'm still not telling. But I will say this... In upcoming issues we were going to lay the foundation for 3 big secret-filled threads: Lucius Fox's secret history with the Waynes. More secrets about the Vellestra crime family (Who Joker used to work for, back BEFORE he was the Joker. The same crime family that killed Phantasms father. And the same crime family that Eel O'Brian and Matches Malone were going to wind up working for). marvel.toonzone.net/fantasticfour/interviews/slott/06.jpg And a new secretive business mogul was going to come to Gotham City to set up his new headquarters... Preston Powers (who would've JUST become the new father to li'l baby Derek Powers-- who would grow up to become the head of Wayne/Powers in BATMAN BEYOND). Seriously, we were going to have a scene where Mrs. Powers hands baby Derek over to Bruce... and Derek spits up all over him. It would've been priceless. How Lucius, the Vellestra-related characters, and the Powers family would have played out their subplots... all of THAT would have built up to the surprise reveal that the Red Hood was actually... ...someone really cool. ;) Also it is interesting to note that there was some confusion as to the name of derek power's dad. The authors hesitated between Warren and Preston. I think the authorial intention was to have Dereck be a half brother to Andrea as both of them would have been geri power's kid. However I am sure you would find a problem in the timeline if you look closely enough. Derek was originally suppose to be a baby but he clearly is over 50 by the time of batman beyond. Now that I see it again am surprised you did not remember this Dan Slott quote because you guys directly reference it in you legacies comicbook when you have a nervous and sick Derek vomit on Bruce. (BTW are you still working on legacies? There was no upload in 2020 but I know that James had a very busy year with the movie and the upcoming baby and the covid diagnosis.) I think it's important to point out that in scott snyder's run the Powers family is the only family that is confirmed to be part of the court of owls. Its interesting to see that in both timelines the powers used mr Freeze to unlock the secrets of immortality.

in my fanfiction universe, Teen Titans (not Teen Titans Go) is part of the DCAU. When Bruce first takes Dick in, the boy is so sad and angry, wishing he could have saved his parents. Bruce lets him become Robin, but quickly sees the kid is not at the same place he was at when he was first starting out (merging some Jason Todd elements). Thus, Bruce sent very serious, almost obsessively compulsive Dick to Jump City. There, Dick started the Teen Titans, explaining why in the show he was so serious and focused; he wanted to be just like Batman and avenge his parents' murder. By the end of Teen Titans series, Dick is noticeably lighter-hearted and more of a kid, which explains the goofy joking Robin in BatmanTAS. You see the serious version pop up in the episode which Dick can almost capitalize on avenging his parents' death.

On another note, i kind of find it hard to believe TNBA Batman and JL/U are the same person. Tnba is really brutal and aggressive and i felt the violence had ramped up significantly whiles JL/U Batman is very agile and mostly calm and collected making his occasional outburst way more significant. Plus hes a bit more light hearted. Like I cant imagine TNBA Batman dodging the spikes in Egypt the same way JLU did

@@ItsOver9000Productions Look at Batman in the JLU episode "Twilight," though: he's still a fairly harsh dude at the stage (e.g. the famous "Cry me a river" line). After that was when he started to soften-- eulogizing Superman, admiring the Flash's ingenuity in "A Better World," and so on. Justice League and JLU were transformative shows for Batman, showing what happens when the Dark Knight regularly works with peers, rather than sidekicks-- he becomes a warmer, even friendlier guy, since he has people he can relate to.
