The Dead Game Fallacy

According to every person on the internet, your favorite video game is dying. It could still have plenty of players, be receiving updates, or even just be a single player experience, but if you enjoy something popular, you'll hear this statement very often. So in the lamest protest of all time, I present a video that complains about vocabulary and word choice. And I coin the phrase Dead Game Fallacy, so that's something.
Thanks for watching! I had a lot of fun writing and considering this topic, and I hope you enjoyed it! If you did, feel free to Like, Share, Comment and Subscribe! And if you didn't, feel free to not Like, Share, Comment or Subscribe!
And as always, an amazingly big, truly grand, ridiculously huge thank you to my Patrons! You are all amazingly generous, thank you again. / seergames

I like Seer's assessment of how the term, "dead game" is used verses what it ought to mean. Similar to widespread butchering of the word literally or the status-quo refusing to allow tomatoes into the fruits club, if enough people are on the same wavelength the meaning of something changes. Now people just call a game dead when they have some personal investment into it but feel their dwindling enjoyment is shared across its player base, whether its true or not. Dead game means about as much as the word literally.

I've only seen an actually pretty dead game once, and it was an MMO I don't remember the name of that me and a friend were checking out. We played it for a solid couple of weeks but in that time we met literally one other player. I remember it being pretty exciting for all three of us, a like "holy shit someone else!" kind of moment. The fact that the servers were still running is probably an argument for it not actually being dead, but definitely seemed like a game that was on life support and probably on its way to getting shut down.

I fully agree: the percieved epidemic of "dead" games is annoying the shit out of me. The only games i consider "dead" are those that can't be played anymore. Modern multiplayer games that depend on working online matchmaking and perfectly updated clients are more vulnerable in this sense. At the same time we have a bazzilion games that aren't vulnerable to those two factors. "Updates" and a lack of players can turn a working game into a corpse, but even in this regard: the internet stews up WAY to much drama. Lets stick to the Overwatch example: Did it lose a whole bunch of players? => Yes. Has it kept plenty to fill up lobbies for players with more or less average skill levels? => Yes. Was it "updated to death"? => Not really, it suffered more from a lack of updates. Something that hits streamers 10 times harder than casual players, and streamers influence the mood in a games community, a lot. => Imho updates didn't "kill the game". Big MMOs like WoW can die, at least on paper. But a frickin diamond plated golden cashcow that poops out solid gold bars like WoW only dies after it's stops printing money. And lets be honest here: even the WoW of 2022 is printing money, less than a few years ago, but the printing hasn't stopped. The day the game stops printing money AB will stop further development aka reduce the costs to run the money printer and keep the server up for another 10+ years... printing decent piles of money with close to zero efford.

Hit the nail on the head with streamers influencing a community - buddy of mine always talks about how the true 'downfall' of modern day games (mainly multiplayer but does happen in single player games) started with twitch - and I cant agree more with both of you - i believe they fully contribute to the dead fallacy of most AAA or 'popular' games too with their (usually arrogant) feedback.

Not because Oh no my beautiful game is threated by a murderer of games but more so the weight and pressure it places on any game that really i just want to enjoy. Be it the game that is the murderer, the dead, the dying, or the alive. I just play game cause game is good.

I agree with this. The thing about TF2 is despite the game not being dead and people saying it was dead just because some idiots said so, The beginning of Meet Your Match made the game unplayable. It didn't kill it, because Valve fixed the problem. But now, the game is near dead, and that's despite the massive player base it still has, because it's unplayable. The bots that aren't being removed from the game make it so, and the only thing keeping the game up is motivation to keep it alive within the player base itself to extents I don't believe exists anywhere else. Scraping whatever is still playable.

my definition of a dead game is one where you cannot match up in a multiplayer game. either the online service itself is gone or there is just literally no one else that wants to play. that is the only way for a game to die, provided it still is even possible to play. I still play old hl1 mods occasionally and while some might say something like cs1.6 is dead, man, they don't know what dead is compared to something like the specialists.

I think the problem is that people often overuse the present progressive when they really mean to use the first future tense. When people say 'a game is dying' they mean 'this game game will die' which has the all so important and relatable implication 'this game *should* die'

I don't agree that saying a game is dead is to grief and criticize. Soul Calibur is my favorite fighting game series, but I say SC6 is dead because I can't find matches, and the fighting game community has moved on to different games. I love the game, but I gotta be honest and say it's pretty much dead.

I've found typically that a game that's 'dying' is more like 'at risk' than actually dying. Like world of warcraft, they've turned it around before. At least i'm crossing my fingers hoping they turn it around this time because i don't wanna see it actually die. The most at risk game i've ever seen tho is EVE Online, always been perpetually kind of niche and on the edge. It's devs now threatening it with P2W microtransactions in a PVP game. I also hope it doesn't actually die.

I think when people say "dead game" they mean it in like the wonder isn't alive anymore. Like cyberpunk, it was more fun thinking and theorizing what all was going to happen with it than playing it, hence even as a singleplayer game it was dead from the start. If a game was never "alive" (as in very fun and known about) then it can't die due to updates or lack of interest- it's not a corpse to be sad about- it's a rock that was never alive (great metaphor I know). People still get satisfaction out of super mario world's gaming, but maybe not for other games because they can't handle the tropes or gameplay anymore.

single player games never truely die ,they just get old and forgotten untill someone discovers them back.Kinda same with multiplayer games , if 2 actual people at least are playing the game at any given time then the game isnt dead, its just that nobody plays it or there isnt a game anymore to be played as the servers are down for good in most of the world , it haves happened before where a game becomes available to be played in a few or just one country with like 4 servers.

I PREFER playing a "Dead Game". As an adult, a parent, and someone with other interests, I don't have the time or energy to keep up with metas and constant barrages of new characters, patches, updates or content. I still play Heroes of the Storm. Mind you I play casually, a couple matches every couple of days: Being able to play a game and knowing it's the same experience as 6 months or even a few years ago, is GOOD for me. I don't mind occasional updates, but I don't need a whole new game every few months.

2:10 The jellyfish fucks are "turritopsis dohrnii", also known as "immortal jellyfish", and it lives forever because it is capable of regressing back into a sexually immature state after reaching maturity on its own, splitting into a bunch of smaller jellyfish, which then grow and do the same thing, rendering the jellyfish biologically immortal unless you go and hunt down each individual polyp. Thus, it has no maximum lifespan! :D
@williamalongi5097
@williamalongi5097 2 жыл бұрын
So it's less that the jellyfish actually "lives forever" and more that it just... never reaches death in the cycle of life. It just keeps getting young, and then growing old, splitting into a bunch of polyps and then getting young again. Individuals can and still do die, though.

Some would say that that's not enough and the game is dead, but why am I then having fun on a server with other people? To me it'd only be dead if there was no one to play with. It doesn't mean it's true you just have a bunch of people that consume media all day long buy into hype and treat titles like flavor of the month. You add the same with speed running communities and everything else that burns through the game faster than they can release content and that's how people begin to think
