The Dead Sea Scrolls have been called “the greatest archeological find of the twentieth century.” Yet, controversy and confusion continue to swirl around these ancient writings.
In this clip from Dr. Bergsma’s The Jewish Roots of Jesus and the Church: Light from the Dead Sea Scrolls, he takes up the question of apostolic succession. Do we find evidence for apostolic succession in the Bible and the early Church? Dr. Bergsma tackles this question that continues to be a subject of debate between Christians by turning to various passages from the Bible and the early Church.

Most people don’t contemplate this, but as a Jewish Believer in Yeshua (Jesus), Apostolic Succession is one of the biggest reasons I am considering the Catholic Church. This tradition of the transmission of authority is ancient. Known as S’mikha in the Jewish world, the succession of authority goes back to Moses. As it was then, it is done today, through the laying on of hands.

Great! Also consider the reasons of fr. David Neuhaus, a Jewish-Catholic priest. I mean, you can check *why* he chose the Catholic Church. He lives in Jerusalem. Sorry for my English, I am Italian and I never speak English in my daily life. Hope my message is understandable. Could you give me some more information about S'mikha? I have been studying the Bible in Hebrew for about 4 years, and I am very interested in Mishnah, in order to "follow" the links between Jewish and Catholic Tradition. By the way, the word "tradition" in the Catholic language means "transmission". The exact Catholic word is Sacred Tradition. From the ancient Latin "tradere" = transmit, pass on from generation to generation. Mi dor le dor. Thank you so much for your comment! 💙💚

Also all the things the Protestants removed from their churches, priesthood, covenant replacing circumcision,Tabernacles, incense, praying for the departed, imagery in the holy tent or temple are all ancient Jewish traditions, they made Christianity into some wasp like form devoid and detached from it's Jewish roots

I’m a convert from Protestantism and apostolic succession was the key element that prevented me from becoming an Anglican. They closely resembled Catholicism, but there was a big problem when it came to apostolic succession and that compromised the validity of their sacraments, so I couldn’t go that route.

Some of these claims seem to be going too far. I’ve read 1 Clement and it doesn’t seem that Clement assumes he has authority over the church at Corinth. Corinth had its own bishop, but some people weren’t submitting to him, so the Roman bishop was backing up the Corinthian bishop. I’m not anti-Catholic by any means, but some of these arguments seem to have too much assumption in them, and eisegesis rather than exegesis, that is, stretching verses to support a belief rather than derive beliefs from verses.

How could the Ignatian epistles be written later than Clement of Rome (who you said wrote as late as AD 80) - wasn’t Ignatius martyred by Nero? The list of Antiochan bishops show he was preceded and succeeded by martyrs under Nero as well. His epistles would be therefore very early indeed.

Very informative. My concern is that no one really defines what they mean by apostolic succession. If you stick to what is in the scriptures, I would say that you see very limited evidence of a centralized leadership that had authority over many local churches. You have Jerusalem council issuing a statement. I think it’s just assumed that since all of the leaders of local churches erected present, each church would follow the decision. Paul didn’t seem to claim any authority over churches he had previously founded but left to start another church. He begged people to repent when they were led astray. He had no authority over the false teachers that he opposed (probably because they had their own church with no affiliation to Paul). There were some references to church discipline in churches where I presume that he was likely serving as a local elder of. It seems that the apostles were careful not to add any traditions of man to what was taught by Jesus. My understanding is that the council of Jerusalem only identified the OT commands that also applied to foreigners living amongst the Jews for Gentiles to adhere to. Sticking to the scriptures shows that they didn’t consider their own apostolic authority in the way that many popes have done.

Those who do not adhere to the original Apostolic Tradition and Succession are MAMZERIM, spiritually illegitimate. A MAMZER is not allowed to enter the Temple of God. Study the Early Church Fathers, Apostolic Fathers, and Ante-Nicene Church Fathers teachings if your church does not follow this God-given tradition. According to the Biblical pattern, every Christian believer must be baptised into Moses, that is, learn how to elevate the Mosaic Laws to the spiritual and prophetic dimensions. We must also sit under an Elijah, that is, study and discern the parabolic language of the Gospels and Epistles. Then, and only then, we cross over into the deeper mysteries relating to Christ. “But the same writer (Clement of Rome), in the seventh book of the same work, relates also the following things concerning him: “The Lord after his resurrection imparted knowledge to James the Just (Half-brother of Jesus) and to John and Peter, and they imparted it to the rest of the apostles, and the rest of the apostles to the Seventy, of whom Barnabas was one. But there were two Jameses: one called the Just, who was thrown from the pinnacle of the temple and was beaten to death with a club by a fuller, and another who was beheaded.” Paul also makes mention of the same James the Just, where he writes, “Other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother.” ”
 ~Eusebius, Disciple of Pamphilus (influenced by Origen), Bishop of Caesarea 314 AD, Christian historian, polemicist, exegete. Ascension of Christ, Book II, 260-340 AD Since therefore we have such proofs, it is not necessary to seek the truth among others which it is easy to obtain from the Church; since the apostles, like a rich man [depositing his money] in a bank, lodged in her hands most copiously all things pertaining to the truth: so that every man, whosoever will, can draw from her the water of life. Revelation 22:17 For she is the entrance to life; all others are thieves and robbers. On this account, we are bound to avoid them, but to make the choice of the thing pertaining to the Church with the utmost diligence, and to lay hold of the tradition of the truth. For how stands the case? Suppose there arise a dispute relative to some important question among us, should we not have recourse to the most ancient Churches with which the apostles held constant intercourse, and learn from them what is certain and clear in regard to the present question? For how should it be if the apostles themselves had not left us writings? Would it not be necessary, [in that case,] to follow the course of the tradition which they handed down to those to whom they did commit the Churches? To which course many nations of those barbarians who believe in Christ do assent, having salvation written in their hearts by the Spirit, without paper or ink, and, carefully preserving the ancient tradition, believing in one God, the Creator of heaven and earth, and all things therein, by means of Christ Jesus, the Son of God.

No such thing as apostolic succession. God gave requirements for apostles in the book of Acts. The mist important of which is that the apostle had to have seen the risen Christ. Scripture says the last to see the risen Christ was Paul. So according to scripture there could be no more apostles.
@michaelmcguire2121
@michaelmcguire2121 2 жыл бұрын
This is incorrect. There were many Apostles. An Apostle is one who is sent. First Jesus sent the Twelve and then He sent the Seventy. The incident you are referencing only applied to the standard to replace Judas because he was one of the Twelve. Paul does not meet the conditions set forth here either because he was not with Jesus from the time of the Baptism of John the Baptist. Paul made Timothy and Titus Apostles and they did not meet the same standards as the Twelve or Paul. An honest and deliberative reading shows quite clearly that Apostolic Succession is grounded in the NT and further supported by the writings of the Early Fathers. God Bless!

@@rbnmnt3341Refuting your interpretation of Acts is easy, the early fathers who knew the Apostles say that the Apostolic authority passed from the Apostles to the Bishops - in Acts 1, it is the office of Apostle from of the Twelve that has to be filled due to Judas’ suicide, to be one of the Twelve requires that you were a follower of Christ from his baptism to his resurrection, and so only a limited amount of people qualified for that office. But that’s not the case for the other Apostles and bishops, Paul was made an apostle by Christ, he was not one of the Twelve though - Apostolic authority was then passed on from the Apostles to their successors who were the bishops as we see in 1 Clement 44 and in the epistles of Paul about Titus and Timothy.
@rbnmnt3341
@rbnmnt3341 Жыл бұрын
@@lukewilliams448 that's nothing but good Catholic propaganda. You see the most important of these requirements to be an apostle, you conveniently didn't mention. The most important of these is that the apostle had seen the risen Christ. I'm sure if you read the Acts you would be enlightened. So those scriptures tell us that the last to see the risen Christ was none other than Paul. So scripturally speaking, after Paul, there couldn't be any more apostles.

@Charles the only authority to as is the bible the words of our Jesus as Lord and head of our church, if the church teaches things outside the words of the bible or anything contrary to the written words of God then Jesus is not anymore the head of that church. It was written in; 1)Deu 4:2 KJV Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you, 2)Deu 12:32 KJV What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it, 3)Isa 8:20 KJV To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them, 4)Gal 1:8 KJV But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Now i want to ask you where can you find in the bible that you should call mary as the mother of God and pray for help to her. Where can you read in the bible that you should fill your church with images and pray to them, where in the bible can you find that you should pray for your dead. Where can you read from the bible that the pope is infallable and many more to mention. So with all of this Jesus can not be considered the head of your church.

I sent the complete words of the scriptures to help you understand the context; 1)1Co 11:2 KJV Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you, 2) 2Th 2:15 KJV Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle, 3) 2Th 3:6 KJV Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. The whole context of these scriptures is the command to the churches of corinth and thesalonica to obey complete the instructions of paul to them. Now in Gal 1:8 KJV paul said "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed". Now what paul is saying to the galatians were not to listen or reject all teachings that that he never thougth to them. Paul never said to add anything to what he had thought to the gentile churches. About mary did the existence of Jesus only started in the womb of mary like you and me in the wombs of our mothers? If mary became the mother of god then then Jesus became god only in her womb.
