Filipino Martial Arts is becoming more popular. If only filipino knows how rich they are in many traditions.
@scottmcman7659
@scottmcman7659 4 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to focus on other things when you have to struggle just to survive. Most Filipino's are dirt poor. The Philippines is a "developing" third world country, but that development is very slow. While their president takes a hard line on things, he knows that the country can't develop if everyone is addicted to drugs and that is an area he's been criticized in because he doesn't coddle drug dealers and suppliers like the West does. In fact, not even six months after his election, well established neighborhood drug dealers were either hauled away or went into hiding. Overcoming the addiction problems is a big step in helping the country climb up the ladder. However, traditions are extremely important to the people, but they do think America, the UK, Australia and the UAE (to name a few) are places where they can escape. They view America as if it were the gold standard of places to live. It's much easier for women to "escape" than men because they hold onto traditional values that American women seem to have forgotten. In the video they mention AC. If you have AC in your house, you are considered rich.

very true, and I think Filipinos tend to seek foreign martial arts - am also guilty of that as I studied Taekwondo way way back in the late 80s and early 90s being influenced by Jean Claude Van Damn movies. I think another is that the colonial mentality wherein the perception of foreign concepts like martial arts tend to do better than the local ones.

correct brother, this is because in kali, arnis, balintawak or escrima (Filipino Martial Arts) is already tested for more than five hundred years and Krav Maga is only 1930s, and also deadly martial art but the FMA is a more fluid system and more adaptable to every situation, thats why it is more lethal because you can combine it with other martial arts like karate, Aikido, jiu jitsu and etc.
@balgomaedmund2325
@balgomaedmund2325 3 жыл бұрын
Krav maga is more on force to force blockings, Kali is like a combination of tai che and aikido, it is very brutal, in our Provence long time ago there is an old man age 65 yo, encounter with 5 man attackers 3 of them have a bolo or pinuti in our terms, 3 of them got kelled instantly and 1 seriuosly endured and the other 1 running away, 5 vs 1, with only 1 60cm fire wood, because of land conflect, this martial arts is dangerous, specially to the person that have a phsycological problem that have a knolege of this art, is very deficult.
@thunderabrau2969
@thunderabrau2969 3 жыл бұрын
@@balgomaedmund2325 thats bullshit! krav maga has never tested like FMA, filipininos has a constant conflict to each other by tribe, also conflict with terrorost, conflict spain, US, Japan and etc. in this many fighting style emerge, thats why they were called FMA but in reality its more than a stick, bolo, knife or swords. we have sikaran, hubod, kali, escrima and etc. so don't brag your krav maga.

Kuya Doug My name is Johnny Itliong. My father was Larry Itliong a Manong who came to America 1929 to the land of milk and honey. But was only exploited and as a agricultural worker. He stood up against this oppression and became one of our most honored Civil Rights, Labor and Union Organizers. A Filipino American Hero. When I was growing up my father and Uncles (many served during WW2) would train in our back yards and at the Filipino Community Hall in Delano Ca. These Manongs train us in Kali & Eskirma. They train us mentally to deal with the eyes that would look down on our most precious form of Martial Arts. I was always proud of my father, Manongs and our Martial Arts. I believe it has become our time to break free of oppression. Thank you for doing what you do. Please google my father Larry Itliong. He help make life better for his kids and all Filipinos.

of course it's not popular. because it has been hidden in the backyard or private rooms of masters for centuries. It is not supposed to be taught for money or popularity, or to prove that it is better and effective than any martial art, because it's deadly and not coded, it's instinctual. Instinctual because it's a "way of life" for most Filipinos, rooted from the depths of our culture, passed from forefathers to sons. It's not popular because it's a tribal dance, who would want to dance like a tribal man?

Zero Rebellion i think there is no such thing like the best martial arts, what realy matters is your trainer and yourself. If we r talking about practical stuff. Well, to be honest, i realy love this MA but still in real knife fight you are not in gym. Doug said dat he mainly trains for fun. on street Everything goes pretty quickly, especially with knife battle involved, the fastest legs are the best here for sure, most of times your opponent will not be well trained, he will not set any ,,knife position'' or attack u with certain technique, he will just rush u and stab wherever he can. Should never participate in thing like this.

Brilliant guy... But I'm glad that Kali is a "backyard " art. As soon as you sell something you lose it's authenticity and it becomes a commodity. I guess the Chinese dealt with this by having an art that they sold and a "family" style that they only passed to disciples.. but then that has it's peculiar set of problems. Just keep exploring and pressure testing and with guys like Doug around quality will always shine through.

The creators focused on different principles and what sort of environment as well as opponents they'll expect to use these systems against. In general the asian martial arts emphasize mental and spiritual discipline, being a martial artist was more than a hobby, it was a career, it was a lifestyle it was an identity. Generalizing here but in the west martial arts is for defense and offense, its a tool so to speak, in the east it is one's soul and life blood.

Not at all. You should never learn a martial art to harm other people. Unless it's on self defense. Although some people might think that by learning a martial art you can kick someone's ass, and probably that's true, the real purpose is never having to use those skills you're taught.

Also his argument about colonial mentality is illogical. It is simply Filipino culture and nothing to do with a bad influence from the West. Then he mentions Taekwondo which is not western, it is an eastern martial art. Also, Filipino masters were simply not business savvy and only a few were able to make money out of it and have careers. Kali is a traditional and everyman martial art. Also the laws in many Filipino cities makes blades illegal to carry and it is a turn off to a lot of people. So many who are rich can hire a private teacher to their home, or the rural areas can use blades openly. Do you think communism would somehow make Filipinos better and their martial arts would flourish? No. The history of communism time and again destroys traditional asian cultures and tries to eradicate all traditional martial arts training while emphasizing a state run martial art which is non-combative. This is so he communist state can control people.

i'd rather stay it the way it should be and not in a mainstream way here in the city, fact is some enforcer and civilians don't know it yet as a weapon which is my EDC (3inch blade stealth Karambit and pocket tourch light) heck! i can enter Shopping malls and other offices without knowing it in my pocket, even though the ring and the clip is protruding STAY FROSTY kaybi-gan...

While doing the separation with the forearm strike, maybe you should do it with your fist closed?? That open hand leaves your fingers vulnerable!! He could grab a finger or two and you’re screwed!!! Really screwed!!!!

I don't find any of your videos useful. They're all just talking (with dramatic music to give the impression that something profound is being said) and quit cuts of action. No actual instruction or clear demonstration.

Thank you for your offerings of real teaching ~ I wish I could experance training with you ~ But seeing you on youtube is very speacial and has great meaning that you put this out ~ Because Im not training with a master I just do simple energy movements and a lot of streaching ~ but because this is so inspiring and I want to assume those abilitys and energys I just assume those positions and try and learn the energy flow and watch a thousand times to Soake - In I like that turme because I learned it from reading The Book of Five Rings ~ and when Musashi wrote about what it means is to soak-in My understanding of at that time helped me learn . So your teaching is so much apreaciated and maybe I will find some people to practus with Thanks for the inspireation !

The usefulness of the karambit depends on the carrier and obviously shown in this video it's most definitely useful. It wouldn't be in use if it wasn't effective.

+Robert Shelton I wish he could come to America and train our police. I would be so pleased to see them taking down dangerous suspects by hand without having to resort to firearms. Doug is amazing, he moves and fights with such grace.

+Alessio Yautja He seemed pretty ok with that officer student of his going for the gun against a group of people I guess it depends on what you consider "dangerous". IMO all suspects are dangerous, thinking otherwise is equivalent of getting complacent, and complacency kills cops every year. Guns will always be necessary for law enforcement. On the other hand, I think Kali is fantastic for every situation that does not call for lethal force. Police get a lot of media attacks when they're seen striking people, but Kali also has a lot of controlling techniques, very useful.
@alessioyautja612

Dale Brimhall Thats what I'm interested in, the control techniques. In California they've started issuing the police with nunchacku instead of batons because of the style of combat employed; because you cant 'hit,hit,HIT' someone with it (it'll whip back around and hit you) you are FORCED to use more restrained control measures. The weapon is as dangerous to the wielder as the opponent but the wielder has the advantage of training. Imagine a dangerous suspect getting a hold of a police officers gun... No imagine them getting hold of a flail type weapon they have never experience before XD In my opinion guns are too easy to accquire lethal force with so, in my opinion, they could be turned on officers. In WW2 the Ameicans dropped thousands of single shot pistols into occupied allied territory with the plan being that resistance fighters could use the single shot to kill an enemy soldier and take his weapons. If there was a single cop in a car and I stabbed him to death through the window I could have access to his sidearm and possibly even a shotgun or other weaponry. Guns are too easy to escalate things with, which is why I prefer to avoid them ^^

+Dale Brimhall this technique is literally made to let your attackers think you're unarmed. But he did not share that deadly technique where he only uses his bare hands because it's too brutal. I just wish he builds a school for this in his country. Just saying.

Dangerous suspects by hand? Your mindset is completely screwed, my friend. You don't survive by taking down dangerous people with your hands. That's a quick way to die. You meet dangerous people with overwhelming force so that you guarantee survival. Otherwise, there'd be a bunch of dead police...so many dead long before you could train replacements. You don't survival lethal force encounters by meeting them with bare hands. Doug is very skilled. He's spent a lifetime training. He's literally 1 in 500,000 (or even, 1 in a million). Even he would be seriously hurt or killed in a confrontation involving weapons or other deadly force situations. Your ignorance is shocking. Take a look at this video. Sticks/swords/knives are deadly weapons. Even in relatively unskilled hands, they are quite lethal. That's why police shoot people with knives, swords, clubs, guns, etc. when they're directed at police or other innocent bystanders. Police are bound by the rules of a "fair fight"---you try to start a fist-fight with a cop, they can use impact weapons, pepper spray, tasers, etc. Whatever it takes to get you under control and into custody. If you go for their firearm (try to disarm the cop to use their weapon against them--now being unarmed), you get shot. Plain and simple. You make a quick move for your waistband after being told to put your hands up, you get shot. The overwhelming majority of the bad press that the police get these days comes from ignorance and stupidity on the part of criminals. Zero sympathy, there.
