Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, died just one month before of his 55th birthday on June 7, 1329. It was Robert the Bruce's wish that when he died his body be buried at Dunfermline Abbey, he also asked that his heart be taken on crusade by his old friend and chief commander James Douglas to the Holy Land and finally buried in Melrose Abbey, and that his organs be buried in the Chapel of St Serf. Dunfermline Abbey had been the burial site for the kings and queens of Scotland since the late 11th century. On his tomb in Latin was written "Here lies the invincible blessed King Robert / Whoever reads about his feats will repeat the many battles he fought / By his integrity he guided to liberty the Kingdom of the Scots: May he now live in Heaven." But that grand and glorious tomb for the king so reverently laid to rest is no more.
During the Scottish reformation in 1560 the Royal tombs were destroyed and The abbey was badly damaged.
In 1818, almost 489 years after Robert the Bruce's death, they found a body while clearing rubble in the east of the Abbey near the high altar.

I do so enjoy your voice as you share history with us. You’re a very talented storyteller. If history classes and videos were all narrated by you history classes would be extremely popular because your method of delivery makes them come. History is such a fascinating subject, but it is often ruined by teachers who just drone on and give lists of dates, places and people and who forget the “story” part of the word “history”. I was blessed with a father and his parents along with many inspiring history teachers who, like you, brought history to life. Thank you.🙏

It was and is disgraceful, and unfortunately, particularly in Scotland, it happened too often. Only enough Russia has where things were destroyed has restored them to their former glory. The reformation in both Scotland and England destr so many beautiful buildings and were nothing other than acts of violence. All those beautiful Abbeys etc that were destroyed by an evil bunch of politicians for personal fain

@stevenleppard1072 history is part of our country, good or bad. And history will repeat itself if we forget about it. Buildings, monuments, statues should be left alone as reminders. Even the bad reminders. We must remember not just the good that has happened. I live in the states where idiots pulled down statues that hurt their feelings. Lincolns statue was painted on. A church was burned down. And why??? People can be so illogical!!!

Robert the Bruce is one of my favorite. So sad that they destroyed the royal graves. Very disgraceful! The remains of so many historical people lost. I'm glad they found a body believed to be Robert and gave the man a respectable grave again.

Ok, but the part of him wanting his body partioned, and buried in different places? After a little roundtrip to the holy land in case of the heart? That's wild 👀 Fascinating story, though 👍🏻
@EvelynEdwards
@EvelynEdwards 26 күн бұрын
Many royals had their visceral (heart, entrails) buried in different places. The idea was you would have more people in different places praying for your soul.
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 26 күн бұрын
@@EvelynEdwards How interesting. I knew, bones were often taken as relics after the fact. But I hadn't heard of people deliberately partitioning their bodies like that. I also would have expected the Catholic church to not be on board with the whole 'desecration of a corpse' thingy. Wasn't that the reason, why they objected to opening up corpses for scientific research?
@marnatz5
@marnatz5 23 күн бұрын
The Catholic Church is okay with donating one's body to science and also donating organ parts for the living who need it. It is seen as being reverent and an act of charity with the goal being to help others.
@raraavis7782
@raraavis7782 23 күн бұрын
@@marnatz5 Oh, I know that that is the modern take 👍🏻. I was just wondering about what it was like in medieval times. I did a bit of googling and it seems, that popular literature/movies and even 'history documentaries' don't necessarily represent this correctly. But then, they tend to get a lot of things wrong about that time period. But I would have to dig much deeper, to be sure what exactly was the official doctrine when.
