Watching this on a custom rom HUGE TIP to people who plan to install custom roms: Manage your expectations. Most of the popular custom roms you will find will not be as smooth and stable as your stock OS on your phone, which brings me to the next tip which is choose a rom that has active maintainers (people who are in charge the rom) and if smooth/stable is what you want, find official uploads for YOUR SPECIFIC DEVICE that is STILL being maintained. Its a whole lot of fun but it needs a lot of searching! Edit: by not smooth, I mean some roms will be stuttering its refresh rate depending on the device 60fps that sometimes falls on 40-30fps in some parts
@AG-en5y11 ай бұрын

Stock Android I know in general tends to slow down overtime and somehow slower than release from a year or 2 ago. This is usually a market scheme practice for the manufacture to convince you, your phone is outdated. For me I use GrapheneOS for privacy use and my battery lasts a lot longer compared to stock android.
@nikolahumljanovic30699 ай бұрын
Thats not true, I've heard that as well but I have Realme X2 Pro 12GB version for almost 4 years now runs on android 11 and is really smooth, could last probably few more years. I don't want and don't need android updates anyway..
@fiecylick39819 ай бұрын
@@nikolahumljanovic3069 This doesn't argue my point of referencing. Custom roms that are open-source and developed by a community are more better off to get the money you paid for on a device. Companies like Samsung, Motorola, Apple and others are known for slowing down your phone on purpose after a new generation to convince you that you need a new phone when you don't. Moreover you are forced to agree to the terms of service & privacy policy or otherwise you cannot use the phone. They take that right you have away like they have power of that even tho its your property. Of course you can just agree to it and accept the crazy policies they have about data collecting and mass surveillance about you day to day but that is up to you. That's when custom roms step in as a open developed community like GrapheneOS, where you take back your privacy and rights at hand. For example my old phone I gave to a family member is a Galaxy Note 9. This phone has been able to run better phones similar to its pricing and have better quality but it is slowed down due to updates they do onto the device. Since the Bootloader cannot be unlocked to do changes you want to do like install linux onto the devicem you don't have full rights to the phone. Look at what Samsung and Motorola did to folks living in Mexico on their phones.

@fiecylick39818 ай бұрын
@@ki11atj49 clearly you never experienced bs or noticed it yet. I'm not trying to be biased but when you see an issue with companies installing apps, and making updates run worse over time or take away features is when things become a problem. So far a year which is expected to still be its full potential til around year 2 - 3 is when things start slowing down and no I do not mean by the battery to be replaced. My old phone before custom roms was a Galaxy Note 9. Still a good phone btw but it is forcefully slowed down and lags on purpose by Samsung due to the updates they force to bring in. My grandmother has a hard time using it because of it. It is not a snapdragon CPU so I cannot OEM Unlock it sadly. This shows the problems that lie with these companies that get greedy and actually causing e-waste and carbon issues other than the stupid media blaming other things for profit.

If your phone is anything that isn't a Pixel, custom ROM is probably the only way to get around the tendency for manufacturers to keep you on old Android versions. Of course with iOS you don't have to worry either way, but you lose out on just about everything else despite having up-to-date software in that case.

Last custom ROM I had was an Android 7.1 Nougat based one on my Galaxy S3 Triband...largely because Team OctOS had dried up on their development and maintenance. Didn't last long before development for my particular S3 variant dried up entirely (the regular S3 for Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile got up to Android 8.0 Oreo). After that, closest thing I had was the unlocked Oreo firmware on my formerly AT&T S7 and the unlocked firmware on my Verizon Note8. Haven't heard about custom ROMs for Snapdragon based devices ever since they been gettin' locked down tight since the S7...though I do hope they're still out there.

Alle the tutorials are looking so confusing, there is no where a big guide that explains all the basics, at least i haven´t found one. I am used to hacking stuff a lot from wii, xbox 360, ps3, wiiu und such stuff. they always have nice tutorials (i know there are more different version of phones) but it is still a mess.

100%. Used to be a "Flashaholic" constantly trying out the next best ROM that came out. Currently on a Note 10 Plus and 0 interest in flashing ROMS. IMO it was only good back in the days when Android needed all the help it could get to be usable. It's come a long way now and Samsung's One UI has just made the experience so much better. IIRC most if not all custom ROMS will break things like Knox Security, Samsung Pass and many other things that actually matter than some often insignificant performance gains in a custom ROM made by some dude LOL. Same as you, the benefits were insignificant, there was always that one thing that didn't work and I always found myself going back to the stock ROM of my phone. Using a Pixel 3a with rooted LineageOS 20.1 here. 1.- You don't need to root your phone in order to use a custom rom 2.- Latest official Android builds are completely broken and unreliable (constant freezes, only solvable by hardboots, extreme lag, app crashing, etc), problems not present in custom roms. Currently running rooted Lineage OS 20.1 and none of these problems are present, clean and smooth experience, no freezes or crashes, no lag, functional banking apps and obviously, root functionality. So no, custom roms are NOT dead, in fact, they are honestly a must-have if you're an Android user, stock roms are utter unreliable garbage.

While the pixels do have good stock android, there's some features that are not there. Like forcing an app to go fullscreen. However, just because stock roms have features of custom roms does not mean custom roms are dead. 1 advantage is easy backups and restoration of data. Its a pain to do non cloud backups and restores with regular phones simply due to the variety of android skins and difficult to get root access. Your point about custom roms dying is somewhat true. Xiaomi still supports custom roms the most, followed by google. But thats about it. You can get a cheap xiaomi phone and slap on a custom rom to get near pixel experience.

Custom Roms are probably best for poor update support devices such as Motorola phones. A lot of their phones are more than capable of handling the latest OS but Motorola simply says, "We don't see a reason why we should update our old products". Luckily, Motorola fully supports OEM unlocking and has provided help in the past, so a custom OS that runs the latest Android version is good option.

They haven't become more unpopular, phone manufacturers have become more aggressive. Realme gt 5g, a serious headache if you want to do anything on it. I tried to downgrade from android 13 to android 12 manually because they are in absolutely no hurry to give a rollback. Thus I lost all traces of systems in the phone. I had to call an Indian who has some sort of developee account at qualcomm to repair my phone.

I still use custom Roms, it's really quite good and gives you the full potential of the phone.

It's not dead, it's blocked by a lot of manufactures, always make sure to pick an android with an unlocked bootloader before even thinking about purchasing, don't wanna have spyware from Samsung, iPhone or anyone, rather have an AOSP ROM
