My biggest problem with the lack of local multiplayer games is the fact that online games don't last forever. Eventually they will die and lose their servers or communities essentially making the game worthless. With local coop you can still play with other people as long as you have friends but no one ever focuses on that anymore.

Another reason why local play will never die entirely is because some games, due to their nature, just aren't built for stable online play. Fighting games, for instance, require an extremely fast and stable connection to play even somewhat decently online, and the tiniest bit of lag translates into massive lag spikes, meaning these games are built primarily with local play in mind, and with online being thrown in for people who don't have anyone to play with.

this is something that my college advisor told me something along the lines those indie developers will be the ones to make these local multiplayer games. I am an artist working on a game called "Broombot Battlegrounds" that is a couch multiplayer party game. Developing online multiplayer is a pain in the ass and we simply don't have resources to development resources to do networking or matchmaking. I am not advertising my game but i feel my bit of insight into this specific genre and why there seems to be a resurgence. I feel the indie scene is where the good portion of the game industry is held.
@GAG0911862 жыл бұрын
Indie-games has certainly been active supporting local multiplayer, and with indie games being multi-platform one could say that local multiplayer is thriving nowadays. Nintendo has in general always been a local multiplayer brand in my opinion, many of their first party titles nowadays have local multiplayer with up to 4 player in coop. I feel as though local couch multiplayer has got some kind of resurgence in later years.

As a solo indie dev that focuses hard on local multiplayer I can pretty safely say that it's the focus on online play combined with the increase market of boardgames as well as local multiplayer being an on how they should be designed. Most local multiplayer games we get these days are heavily focused on a solo experience or a online experience, but not on a group experience. The reason something like Mario Kart work as a local multiplayer game is the ability to take victory from the person next to you, to stab them in the back or team up to screw someone else over all things you kinda miss and don't need in a solo or online setting. The term I'd like to use in my native language, Dutch, and and that is not able to translate properly to English is "gezelschap spellen". Which is used mainly in relation to board games but is also very applicable to videogames, it roughly translates to "games played with company". And well, that's what is lacking in a lot, if not most, modern games that have a local multiplayer mode, they are made to be played in the company *OF* others, not *WITH* others. Or in more philosophic terms, being "together alone". And even from a sheer business sense local multiplayer doesn't make much sense as a big focus of a given product, that is what gives more value for money a game you can play at any time or a game you can only play if you get some buddies together? Everybody that buys a game has time to play it alone, they can also easily find someone to play with online, but can they find the time to play it with friends or do their friends even want to play that game? Maybe. (now the shilling, check my stuff out. my first game for my own business is nearly releasing and do some game design write-ups on my site including topics like this. If anyone is interested in any of that comment I'll give the deets)

Going to tell you, local multi player and online multi player are almost exactly the same time to implement. This is because the engines do it for you, unity can put in basic 2-8 local players in under 10 minutes. Unity can also do online in around the same time, mirror is a good example.
