Bella being automatically cool because she's a new girl is something I didn't expect from a movie. Even though she had little personality, people were drawn to her because she was new. It was so true. If there was ever a new kid at school, they'd make friends real easy. People really want to talk to the new kid.

apparently the director of the first twilight movie was really passionate about the project and tried to earnestly make a good movie, and i think that’s more obvious to people now. it’s just sad bc she was able to make it such a unique experience with a very specific aesthetic and it just got panned at the time because “media for teen girls bad and sparkly vampire bad = movie bad” :\ i’m not entirely sure but i don’t think she’s done much work since

It's interesting because the success of the Twilight saga sort of inspired Hollywood to do The Hunger Games, which in itself spawned another new sub-genre "YA heroine in a post-apocalyptic world" - A few that come to mind are Divergent, The Host and The Fifth Wave.

I was in middle school at the height of Twilight fandom and I was OBSSESSED. Such a huge fan. Read all the books, watched the movies in theaters. At the time I was like “this is amazing!” Then when I got older I became really embarrassed by it and stopped claiming it. Recently, I’ve become proud again of how big a fan I was! It really was a cultural moment that’s hard to describe if you weren’t involved in it at the time.

Same here! Amanda the Jedi's Twilight videos helped me embrace the fact that I still love Twilight for what it is, even though there are so many legitimate reasons to criticize it. I find that I only truly enjoy the first book and movie though. Everything after is more of an ironic enjoyment at this point. Regardless, it was an important part of my early teens, and that will always matter to me.

- there was this movie called "the fallen" where the love interest was an angel, i've never seen it but everyone said it was so bad, i only saw the dylan video and it looked pretty terrible lmao. - everyone hated vampire academy, i liked it, idk why, nostalgia at this point, but i vibed hard lmao - the mortal instrument is famously terrible, great source of meme - i am number four really tried, back when alex pettyfer had his moment, but they only made one movie, so flop i guess. i genuinely can't remember it though so probably not great? - omg i just remembered beautiful creatures as well, oh dear i hated that so much, but i can't say if it's because i dropped the books halfway through bc they were getting crazy, or because the movie was not good? like i cant remember if i liked the book an thought the movie was bad, or just didn't like the movie bc i didnt like the book? i have confused memories regarding that whole thing thats all i can think of rn with the help of google, unearthing memories lmao

The trope of women/girls falling in love with a monster and “fixing them” is a deep seated psychological phenomenon that has its roots in archetypal reality and by extension our instinctual hardwiring. It is a variation of the female version of the hero’s journey.

I love these “the death of…” videos!! Thank you for making this one! I like what you said about Bella not being the typical "outcast new kid until she finds her own IT factor" girl. People usually do want to talk to new kids because they want to know what they are like. It was realistic. I like how even tho twilight was one of those "shy quiet girl falls in love with 100 year old hybrid animal-human-mAN" or something movies, it wasn't an abusive badboy-goodgirl thing. Edward wasn't the "hot popular guy" either. Sure their relationship was pretty toxic in the first two movies, but i feel like when Bella becomes a vampire, it gets better!

genuinely cracked up out loud at multiple moments in this video. love how you gave your honest opinion and didn't just automatically discredit any of these movies for no real reason. idk I hold a lot of nostalgia for the times when very little mattered and I could be attached to characters without it having to be a form of escapism. its the kind of genre you can afford to be invested in at a certain time in your life and I definitely miss it. I was more obsessed with the books than the movies though and its kind of upsetting to see how movie adaptations tended to never take themselves seriously, like teenage girls could be satisfied with mediocrity so they could do whatever they want - we know now how that worked out. I'm happy to see that changing somewhat with to all the boys i've loved before, for example.

OMG so, these aren't movies, but Twilight inspired the HELL out of some TV shows, Vampire Diaries and True Blood being two shining examples! Honestly I think a much bigger era culturally, as a lasting effect of the twilight craze, was the supernatural dramas of the late 00's to early 10's. teen monster era also deeply permeated tv, creating two of my favorite tv shows of all time: teen wolf and the vampire diaries. i think supernatural teen dramas are actually Brilliant bc for non supernatural teen dramas, the only way to up the stakes is by introducing crime, betrayal/cheating, or other basically life-ruining plotlines that the characters will forget in a season. with supernatural shows, you can contrive plot/relationship drama by putting characters in these Very Specific Life Threatening scenarios, and i just find that so fun. it’s camp. that’s what it is

I have been binging the covenant as background noise for the last month because I have a fatass crush on Reid (the blonde one) because that's the only good thing i could take away from the movie

Warm bodies is one of my favorite movies of all time and I don’t know why? maybe it just has the vibes, right soundtrack, or story, but it’s so great and memorable, I’m glad I’m not the only one who can sit down and enjoy it lol

This video had me dying because I recently decided to revisit Twilight, the books and movies and I still think they’re great. The haters honestly didn’t know what they missed out on.

Think I should mention the movie Spring here. An actually endearing monster romance story where, for once, the girl is the monster. I thought it was pretty good and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t typically care for romances.

"Who cares about a love triangle at a time like this" This is my biggest gripe about the movies. In the Hunger Games books the whole time Katninss is like I don't have time for this shit, I'm just tryna stay alive. But of course they had to push the love triangle in the movies cause that sells tickets I guess

Honestly. Katniss' relatability and her want to just live was realistic and pretty great. But yeah, after the Twilight/Hunger games era, I haven't been able to read a book or watch a movie with a love triangle plot since. It literally makes me roll my eyes because of how overused it is.

fun fact in the beastly book the monster transformation was actually more intense, it made him super furry and basically like the beast from beasty and the beast. when I was a kid I was disappointed that the movie didn't do that, and I thought it was obviously so that they could still make him semi attractive so that teens would still want to watch the whole movie.

I could never get behind Twilight. I did watch all of the movies, but I wanted to take my eyeballs out of their sockets and scrub them with bleach every time I saw Edward and Bella kiss, every kissing scene was so awkward and cringey. Warm Bodies tho, now that's a teen love monster movie classic. 10000/10, would recommend.

The memories of these movies man lol I actually never seen Beastly. I loved Warm Bodies, I thought it was cute and actually made sense to me. I will forever love Twilight no matter how cringe it is, its a vibe. I grew up being team Jacob because he was hot to me but now as an adult, both need help lol

Holy crap this entire genre is the greatest fantasy of women thinking they can "fix" a monster. It's genius.

Not women "think they can fix a monster" - women think they *need* to fix them, that (toxic) man's mental and emotional health is our responsibility. That's what we learned from movies like this.

Somehow I was simultaneously on Team Jacob and NotLikeOtherGirls. No idea how I did that. But in the end, Warm Bodies is still my favorite zombie movie. It poked fun at zombie movies, teen monster movies, and general YA romance stories all in one go while still taking itself seriously enough to have a good story. Was that story just Romeo and Juliet? Sure. Was it really obvious that was the case because their names are R and Julie? Yes. And that's how it poked fun at itself too. 9/10 teen monster movie

Can you talk about Jennifer's body and Sucker Punch? I literally love you raw analysis of movies and music. You truly have an artistic sense and I enjoy hearing other's opinion of these unpopular movies. Both movies had the most iconic directing and visuals combined with the most remembeavle soundtracks.
