Thank you Dave! We paid off over $65k in two years. I'm a teacher and my husband is in the military. YES, it can be done. We bought used cars, paid cash Clothes shopping budget was $100 for THE YEAR We didn't use our air conditioning or heating if we could avoid it. We disconnected ALL of the appliances when they were not being used. We negotiated with our landlord We had fun with it. Thank you, Dave Ramsey Team!

Chicken Dude Or even better perhaps they can learn from that experience and both not rack up debt in the future that is double that of certain people's yearly income that would work like a charm too! These two were living above their means before and it doesn't matter how much you make if you live above your means you will PAY! Lots of people that were middle class or rich have went flat broke due to huge debts!

@@chickendude4299 I think they preferred to sacrifice other stuff than their time toguether. People pick and choose HOW to do their own snowball. What's the point of paying it 6 months faster, if they hardly saw each other. Maybe they thought about that.

And changing old behavior is hard possibly the hardest thing you will ever do, but I am working on it... I started out $31,366.91 in debt July 27th, 2016 when it hit me and I started a budget right then and seven months to the day I am down to a total of $9,503.97 IN SEVEN MONTHS..... I only bring home $2,200 a month total and I have sold a few things but if I can do it you can also... I am planning on selling a few more items I have that I don't use and I should be out of that $9,500 in the next three months if I am able to sale for what I am asking for. Thanks Dave between you and the lord yall got through my hard head and I feel so blessed now and I can't wait to finish paying off my debt and being able to bless others

Awesome job Michael! You have about the same income as our family and we started our emergency fund in June 2016 and just finished the last few thousand with tax refunds. People at work were unbelieving in how we saved over $8500 in 6 months on that income. Work, patience and focus paid off! Keep going man, you'll be done with step 3 in a short time with that behavior.

I did have to sale some things but If I can do it you can too... Remember what Dave says "Live like no one else, so that later you can live... and give like no one else" it's a small price to pay now to do without but imagine having no monthly payments and a fully funded emergency fund and how stress free that will make your life. You can do it, keep pushing forward and you can be someones hero next...

This not only works with debt but a variation of this works with goals in general. I had no debts but applied this strategy to goal achievement and I have successfully saved for a car and now saving for tuition. One goal at a time, at least for the ones you want to achieve in the short term. IT WORKS
@ReturnOfTheJ.D.

The reason it works is that a small successes is easier to build on than a large one - it also tends to push you in the direction of a larger success than the one before. Same way a string of small failures can magnetically draw you toward a larger failure. Start small, and you have room for growth. Really hammer it though too hard and you burn out fast like a shooting star.

Hey Dave - I actually did go to Harvard Business School for my MBA (having graduated from my state school for undergrad). My friends laugh at me for being so risk averse (for being debt free) and tell me I should carry a big mortgage in order to have more money "at work." I totally get the theory (especially working in private equity). But you are so right; there are different rules/objectives for "personal" finance. It is so tempting to spend more as you earn more... I have friends earning seven figures per year living month to month. Personally, the luxury I value is the knowledge I can weather a storm without my family feeling any effects. Modern society encourages people to spend and borrow and spend. It keeps the economy going (and some people motivated to work hard) but creates all kinds of bad consequences...

inflation is 2ish% per year, if you're making 1% interest in REALITY your money is at least 1% less valuable after a year sitting in the bank doing nothing. Keep some cash in the bank but invest the majority of it.

My mother always told me, “No honest job is a bad job”! If you feel ashamed it’s “False Pride”! You say ‘Flip burgers’. Although, I feel that all these older people are taking the jobs that teenagers had as their first jobs. Where do our teenagers work today if McDonald’s is forced to pay older adults $15 an hour so they can feed family’s? Our country has been turned upside down because we have so much unskilled labor looking for work! When I was a teen the fast food restaurants were where we found jobs.

I love these talk shows! I'm 20, but whenever I was 16 I was set on getting braces since my parent couldn't afford it. At the time I had no debt and suddenly I had to pay 3.5k which doesnt seem much, but at the time I already stressed! I finished paying for the debt in only 6 months working a part time job in best buy and doing other jobs like mowing and babysitting! Now I find myself with a better appreciation for money which is why I've decided to finish 2 years of basics in community college with no winter or summer breaks in between to cram as many classes as possible while working a part time job. Next fall I will be able to pay for 1 whole year of my university tuition in cash! Hopefully, I can pay the last year (10k) 6 months after graduating! Whoever, excuses themselves for taking up loans after high school need to man up and stop making excuses! Being 100k in debt and no job is the worst investment in my opinion especially since work experience is as equally important as academics, maybe even more.

The Debt Snowball works for people who need psychological and emotional support. You pay more interest in the long run but the little quick victories will encourage you. So more people are paying off their loans using the snowball method than the debt avalanche method.

Thanks for this! People get so bogged down in things like opportunity cost and rate of return that they don't do anything. If you did everything else exactly the same, it would be better to pay the debt with the highest interest rate and invest at interest before paying debt. But almost no one actually does that. You get motivated by quick wins and light at the end of the tunnel.

While I agree that paying off smaller to larger debts is motivating, I have been paying off my debt, largest to smallest. That has been just as, if not more motivating. Yes, it is motivating to pay off a small loan, but that motivation goes out the window when you look at your largest loan and how it got so much bigger, knowing well enough that you will have to come face to face with it someday. It's much more motivating to me to knock out the big guy first, and then each subsequent loan will be easier to pay off and much less threatening than the last as opposed to harder.

Matt Fuchs you have to find what works for you and do it! I lovedave Ramsey but I don't follow all his advice to a T. My smallest debt had 0% interest on it for a year.. no way I was going to pay that one off first. In the end.. I'm debt free and now attacking my mortgage! Good luck and keep motivated!

It’s not cookie cutter for everyone. People need to do stuff tailored to their situations. I do the Debt Snowball Method but since we have a lot of extra funds coming in, my husband is tackling the principal on the mortgage. We’re doing what’s tailored to our household because it works for us. At the same time, I know what I’m doing. We also put money in our Roth IRAs. Once the mortgage is paid off, we can invest like crazy and focus on the rest of our debt. Now neither one of us actually works. He a Retired Disabled Veteran and I’m a Disabled Veteran. I’m about to go back into the workforce next month so things can move a lot faster. I’m losing my mind being home but the doctors sat me completely down. I didn’t have a choice.
