The Decameron is a mid 14th century book by italian author Giovanni Boccaccio. Its set in 1346 and tells the story of a group of young nobles from Florence that, in order to escape the black Plague, decide to take refuge in a mansion in the countryside. To spend time they decide to tell tales to eachother and the book is a collection of these tales (100, 10 for each guest). Here in Italy is very famous (on the same level of Dante’s Divine Comedy) and is studied in both middle and high school. The tales are generally pretty good, going from comedy, to drama, to horror, to erotic (A LOT of them), and could really be apprecieated even by todays people. They have a good source material, i hope they dont screw it up. ps: after seing this trailer i dont have good expectations

I'd suspect it won't be a story collection, like the book, but go in a kind of "covid lockdown, but make it historical" direction. Which is a concept with potential! But calling it after the Decameron book seems like a mistake to me, it will only give people the wrong idea and make everyone mad.

I think this is by far the craziest and funniest series I've ever seen. It's so macabre, funny, crazy - and the characters are so individual and psychologically broken - omg, it's divine. it's like a mix of daily soap, cabaret - and Bridgerton but only in Italy in 1348 - wrapped up in the plague and looking for a hot life. Everyone only wants the best for themselves. no matter what the cost.

Don't know what you people are complaining about... I loved it, and it inspired me to order Boccaccios book. That's what this sort of work is suppose to do. A movie or a series doesn't always have to be a carbon copy of an original. I'm happy Netflix brought something out other than another kissing both movie or whatever the hell they've been doing lately. I think the costumes look very nice, although I'd have liked to have seen more of the crazy late 1300's fashions. The filming locations were amazing AND actually what I imagine interiors really really looked like then - extremely colourful and almost guady in a way and also full of riches and not drafty grey old castles, like most movies have shown it to us. They did a wonderful job. It was very well done and the cast was very good as well. Thank you Netflix, for finally doing something worth watching and inspiring at the same time. Keep up the good work

One of the points of an adaptation is to keep the spirit but change with the times. You have to make the characters and situations relatable to a modern audience. Especially if it's a comedy. Humour changes a lot with the times. I enjoyed it immensely, as a history buff. And you're right, the castle interiors were actually as they would have looked - lots of tapestries and colour, gaudy as hell, not bare stone walls. Which helped the over-the-top nature of the show. It's funny how the supposedly 'accurate' Game of Thrones showed us lots of bare stone walls for the 'dark and gritty' feeling, when that is not how a castle would have looked lol. Besides the insulation, they didn't like bare stone walls any more than we do :)

I don’t know, maybe if someone is not familiar with the book the series seems pretty funny and witty. My perception was probably spoiled by the fact that here in Italy we all study the decameron, so I was expecting something else. While the goofiness and the humour are in line with the book, I feel like it’s missing some finesse. The tales are the most important element of the book, taking them out entirely is such a waste. They escape the pestilence by going to this villa, yes, but mostly they “mentally escape” the pestilence by telling each others stories, rejoicing in each others’s company. If I think of this show as a stand-alone thing then okay not bad, but I can’t help but feel it could have been a lot better given the great source it had.

It’s inspired by The Decameron in terms of several young nobles going to escape the plague in Florence, but that’s as far as it goes. If you can get off your high horse and stop judging a series off purely the title, it’s actually a really good watch. Lighthearted in some parts, macabre in others and purely nonsensical fun. Netflix has even said if you’re after historical accuracy then maybe this series isn’t for you. And tbh, it might even inspire people to actually look into the history of the Decameron, medieval Italy ect it did me. They didn’t advertise is as a documentary, it’s a black comedy🙂

Why WHY do they keep the title if they change the content ???? Imagine "Titanic" but in a plane or "Romeo and Juliet" with no Juliet but with two Romeos ! @@philipcoriolis6614 Have you watched it? I suspect that your true issues are that it is not in line with your worldly views, rather than your desire for historical accuracy from a 14th century fictional portray of 10 Italian nobles telling each other stories for escapism from the plague. As for adaptions of other works, Shakespeare’s sonnets and plays continue to inspire adaptations everyday all over the world. The beauty of art, poetry, literature and theatre is that it is accessible for everyone. This particular adaptation doesn’t claim to be accurate, but it may inspire future generations to actually research the Decameron which helps to make it accessible and relevant for future generations… something I feel most great literary figures would be delighted with 🙂

@@philipcoriolis6614 I mean no ones forcing you to watch it, but I suspect they chose that title because it’s inspired by Boccaccio’s works. Everything has a target audience, why do you think making a series for a niche group is a bad thing? Why do you think adaptations are a bad thing? It’s essentially brought a 700 year old text to the forefront of people’s minds. I’d never heard of it until the series and now I have a copy of the short stories 😊 As for wokists making stories from scratch… Actually! It’s quite ironic you’re saying this as the Decameron itself is based on stories from different countries such as Ancient Greece. Boccaccio uses various pieces of mythology, referencing characters or real-life historical figures in his stories within the Decameron so you’re essentially getting triggered by an adaptation of a book that borrows from other works for inspiration 😂😂

It would be more accurate (and less bigoted) to make this request of "people who don't like subtitles", not "anglophones" in general. Not all (or even most) native-English-speaking people hate subtitles, and there are plenty of non-English-speakers who do. The generalization does not make you look good, dear.

I agree. I found this series to be strangely fantastic. It's such a simple fun watch and really funny. Though some sad parts regarding some characters fates. Really sad it's over, I hope they can make a spin off or as the director mentioned, perhaps an anthology series and maybe some of the survivors can make an appearance or cameo in that too. 👍👍

Never heard of this story but watched the show. Many things were done right but the regime change (comedy to drama) ruined it - it broke the mood. The writing failed after 4 or 5 episodes, many character arcs made no sense, plot holes... Maybe the original story makes sense but this series, not so much. And the ending was meh. Too bad, loved the casting, great acting especially Tindaro - very very good!

I know that it’s just a two minute trailer but they could have named it in another way and it would have been fine, the storyline is not that bad but it doesn’t make me recall the Decameron, beside the time period in which is set, also doing a series based in Italy on a Italian book and no Italian actor present, I’m not saying everyone but at least one. All I can think is that they are using famous stuff with random storylines for rage bait

Wow, the comments are quite negative. I binged it in one day, and I must say, if you all don’t get angry about the title, it’s a really enjoyable show. I haven’t read the book, I just thought it would be a fun mindless watch, finding the premise interesting + I’m a fan of medieval comedies, but I ended up loving it. So fun to watch all the secrets get revealed and relationships to fall apart and start, also its so bizarre and funny. My favorite thing was thinking back to the characters in the very beginning as they were pretty one dimensional and as the show progressed it becomes so different. The characters I were rooting for swap around constantly and the person I hated is now my favourite and vise versa (looking at you pampinea 😤). So I would absolutely recommend it to anyone, it’s really great!

There are like 2 non white actors in a big cast. What is the problem now? (also non white italian exists, arabs invaded Sicily before the Decameron was written and I suppose some form of immigration from the north coasts of Africa happened, of course they are a minority)
@nnp1989
@nnp1989 4 ай бұрын
the fact is that things didn't really go this easy, you are ignoring southern and northern italy's totally different history, and that we are talking about the Florence upper-class. Yes, immigration is a real thing that occoured, but if this is YOUR explaination it still doesn't add up completelly to historical facts. I don't care if they are black, white or asian, cause its fiction at the end of the day, but just don't try to justify it with random facts unconnected to each other (or connected in the wrong way).

So in 1348 Italy had exactly the same ethnic diversity as the UK today. The British and Netflix really love to rewrite history, specially other countries' history, don't they?
@TapestrythatsWoven
@TapestrythatsWoven 4 ай бұрын
They had way more- especially during this time in history. Italy was part of the Silk Road and was literally neighbors with the Middle East and North Africa. The average Italian today is part North African and Middle Eastern genetically cause Italy has a long ass- much longer than the 1300s- history with other continents bordering the Meditterean (ie Africa and Asia). Italy had a Muslim population (of thousands of Persians, Arabs, and North African Moors) before Britain even knew what a Muslim was. Before Britain was even conquered by the Normans. When Romani people migrated to Europe from India during the 1300s- Italy and the Balkans is where they got to first (oh but you see an Indian guy in the cast and you're freaking out? Really?). Y'all want to talk about history, but y'all act like history didn't exist- and people never traveled or went anywhere- until the 1500s. And you probably think only white people could magically travel or know how to travel anywhere. Really?
@tiberiopompeyo1627
@tiberiopompeyo1627 4 ай бұрын
@@TapestrythatsWoven I never said that everyone in Italy at the time was white. Even though traveling in those days was much more difficult than today, I'm sure that it would have been relatively normal to find some people from the north of Africa and the Middle East. However, like I wrote before, this trailer shows the kind of diversity that you can find in the UK today (or at least the kind of diversity that you can find in any large British city today). So, yes, I call it rewriting history.
