"We Both Go Down Together" Here on these cliffs of Dover So high you can't see over And while your head is spinning Hold tight, it's just beginning You come from parents wanton A childhood rough and rotten I come from wealth and beauty Untouched by work or duty And oh, my love, my love And oh, my love, my love We both go down together I found you, a tattooed tramp A dirty daugher from the labour cans I laid you down on the grass of a clearing You wept but your soul was willing And oh, my love, my love And oh, my love, my love We both go down together And my parents will never consent to this love But I hold your hand Meet me on my vast veranda My sweet, untouched Miranda And while the seagulls are crying We fall but our souls are flying And oh, my love, my love And oh, my love, my love And oh, my love, oh my love And oh, my love, my love We both go down together

while jumping off the cliffs of dover or other forms of dramatic pact suicide have occurred the message in these songs so often is for the living. how far is devotion? how much can love be measured? if your passion is serious enough can it live through utter rejection by those around you? can you die to the world and all its expectations in order to gain each other? can you survive your own expectations of each other. can you not only die for love, but in all the years that follow can you live for love? can you live for each other?

dude it was a murder suicide, the narrator raped his "love"- "you wept but your soul was willing"
@essimathews90566 ай бұрын
Hard to say. Lots of people cry when overwhelmed by a lot of things. It’s possible that he assumed that it was consensual, and it wasn’t. It’s also possible that they had an emotional moment and he says “her soul was willing” because he asked. There’s not a lot of context either way
@matthewdennis17396 ай бұрын
@@essimathews9056 I'd say that both interpretations are possible, but given the song is narrated by the wealthy guy her soul being willing is probably his perspective, not fact/her perspective. As you say, he may have gotten some kind of verbal consent, or she just may have been emotionally overwhelmed but none of that is explicitly stated. Ultimately, it's art and I think it's best to stick to whatever interpretation you like best. That said, I think that Colin has commented before that the narrator is a sociopath so that suggests the murder suicide perspective.

My beloved chipmunk Sergeant Jitters and i used to love to listen to this song together before she died of mesothelioma and is now dead, having passed on to the land of death and the dead, deadly. I can't hear this song without seeing her smile. Rest in power in that great birdfeeder in the sky, Jitters, for you're now dead.

@@toainsully Jane/Joe Doe are of course phrases used to reference someone who's identity is unknown. they are also used to describe the "average person". it just seems to me someone making this type of comment has more than one account. they use this one to say things they would not want their main account to be held accountable for saying. it's not unusual in internet forums, online games, etc.
