I’ve worked at a retirement and now work at an airport and we only have one rule for disabilities in both. “Do not assume everyone with a disability needs your help. Ask them if you can do anything to help.” I love that. I’ve had handicapped friends and I’ve never brought it up to them. They know that, so just live in the moment with them.

I was non-verbal until I was 7 and even then I was very slow with speech by the time I was 10 (some combination of phonological dyslexia and autism. Even now I don't choose to speak unless necessary). People would just assume that I needed help with things because they saw me as "retarded" (I've heard that word be used a few times, including some of my primary school teachers who thought I didn't understand), I wasn't, my cognitive faculties were not only fine but I excelled at things just not language. I remember hating being talked down to and not having the language to tell them to fuck off. Others who understood that I was perfectly capable would have to step in if someone was being patronising to me, otherwise I'd just ignore them and they may still think I was "retarded" but at least they'd think I was enough of a lost cause to not waste their time with me. While a lot of kids didn't want to hang out with me because I never found others to be interesting enough and I'd rather just sit and think. No kid ever called me dumb or tried to be patronising, they viewed me as an equal just knowing that I was likely not going to interact with them much. They understood that I wasn't bored and needed to be interacted with, that I liked sitting alone visibly not doing anything. If they were playing some kind of game that involved running and I joined uninvited it was never an issue even though I was by far the fastest and most nimble and I dominated games of Bulldog. Adults can be such arseholes who enjoy getting off on being better than others, but kids are usually good. A couple weeks back I went to my niece's birthday party and I wear ear defenders because I don't like sounds. One of the guests also wore ear defenders, she sat next to me and we spent the whole party sitting in silence together. Some of the other parents would come up to her and try to interact and get her to participate while talking slowly and using deliberately simple words, and she gradually moved close and closer to me, appreciating that I was an adult that was not going to talk down to her, or force her to do anything, or talk to her at all. However, when kids would come over they would treat her normally and she would gradually move further from me. We only made eye contact once, when she got up to go and smiled at me, but I had looked to her a few times and her face was expressionless. I really like my ear defenders, I just wish that people didn't treat it as if it was something that I wanted to stop. So many people try and get me to take them off and I don't know why other than it might be making them uncomfortable, either explicitly instructing me to take them off or trying to talk to me when I'm obviously blocking sounds.

Oof. That sounds annoying. And I'm guessing some of it ended up being depressing stuff? Not that your parents would do that on purpose, but it's hard to find media that actually mentions autism that doesn't make it sound like some kind of cancer, especially if it's about autistic kids. Though, on a good note, when my mom was looking for autistic role models, she showed me Daria xD. She's not canonically autistic as far as I know, but I don't care, that was a good show.

As a kid with CP, I can remember my mom asking "why don't you like this? the main character is like you!" As an adult I realize that I showed dislike of it because I hated myself in some way because I wasn't like other kids and knew I was different. Now that I'm older I look back on the show I can say that many of the jokes towards wheelchairs are extremely relatable like being late because your chair needed charging. Still stings.

It was a bit... Presumptuous to assume you'd like it because of the kid being in a similar state, but it seems funny enough, it was one of the shows that may have be been something good to look into... Even if some stuff hits a bit close to home

@allaninaet2835 Жыл бұрын
@firepuppies4086 I know that this reply is way late, but now that I have watched the movie Don’t Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot I think I have a reply. Looking back, I think my mom just wanted to teach me that others were just like me, but instead of the frustration they could move on in life and make others happy. Something I've learned even before watching the movie is that, it doesn't matter mentally how much money you can make from your art if you love being an artist and want to see people loving your art, you matter as a person and your art makes you happy. I've used this as a drive to not hate myself as a disabled woman and it's definitely a healthier mindset to have than a self pity party. As a child I couldn't see this mindset, as it came with age. Yes I do have Cerebral Palsy, but I'm so much more than that.

Even though it wasn't my favorite show, I think it's one I definitely admired as a kid. Though blind, not a wheelchair user, it struck me as seriously awesome that there was a show that was actually centered on a kid with a disability living an average, every-day life. I still remember the episode with that puppet weirdo who would not accept Pelswick's puppet unless it had a wheelchair, showcasing the ignorant small-mindedness of some, but approaching the whole situation with some good humor and well-delivered sarcasm. "Fortunately for my mother, I was born without it" being a line I still remember Pelswick saying, referring to his wheelchair.

i've never seen or heard of this show but the fact that there was a disabled character on tv in that time period where the entire plot wasn't based around his disability is mindblowing. i'm often reduced to my disabilities even if they're invisible and it really sucks because i'm a human being before that. yes, we want our disabilities to be recognized, acknowledged, and accommodated for, but we have personalities and interests and identities outside of being disabled too. even if it made such a small murmur on the network, it's still nice to know that there was at least one main character on a kids show that was disabled and everyone just treated him like a person.

I remember watching Pelswick too. I think the show did achieve what it meant to though the audience may have been small. It showed a child learning to get along in life despite his disability and how he didn't let it hold him back. Any time a challenge was put in front of him I knew he could handle it. That's just how much confidence I found in this character.

The background of this show was so awesome to learn! I had a great uncle who effectively spent most of his adult life in a wheelchair due to an "accidental" police shooting (mistaken identity) in the 60s. if this show ever aired in Australia, I missed it as a kid, this is my first time hearing about! I wouldn't be surprised though if Nick Australia deemed it "too much". I used to work as part of a school incursion program that focused on disability awareness and the amount of people who told me, a wheelchair user, that simply talking about my exsistance to kids was "too dark" was just mind boggling. As a disabled comic artist myself, I'm glad his work got mainstream attention, however brief it might have been!

I remember that cartoon, Nickelodeon UK marketed its debut heavily and showed several episodes back to back… on what may have been the only night they showed it at all. Honestly until a while ago I was wondering if I had imagined the show thing.

As a kid who was (and still is) in a wheelchair I LOVED Pelswick growing up. I wished it had a longer run with more episodes.

I was a big fan of Pelswick. I thought it was a great show and especially liked the ways in which his disability was not focal point of the show. Your video illuminated alot of things for me. I never knew anything about the creator and learning about him hellped to give greater context to a show I really enjoyed. This was an informative video that allowed me to better understand the person behind the show (which I didn't know was a comic strip) and will allow me to better enjoy the series in th efuture.

One of the few Nickelodeon non-Nick Jr. shows that had a brief run on CBS Saturday Mornings. It felt more at home on a network that had a history of Nelvana shows than Nickelodeon. Canadian cartoons have a certain feel to them I can't rightfully describe, and had I cable at the time, I don't think I'd see this as a Nicktoon or a Nickelodeon original. Even when placed in the same CBS line up as All Grown Up, As Told By Ginger, and especially Hey Arnold.

My favorite episode was the one where pelswick was collecting cards and couldn't get the rarest card that later became the most common card at the end of the episode

I loved Pelswick! I love how it didn't victimize him just because he was in a wheelchair. You watch it, and sometimes forget "Oh, this character is in a chair..." He had a personality, and was witty, and funny! I'm sad they didn't go further
