A short introduction & Patch walk through for one of my current favorite synths, the Deepmind 12.
Patch Explanations :
Pads
Bass
Keys
Watching back it certainly feels a little scattered, but that's how I think, let me know what does and doesn't work.
BUY USED!
Reverb.com is where the sold listings were from.
Things I missed but want to call out :
There is a 6 voice version available, and a keyboard-less desktop version. Both go for even less.
I'm using a sustain pedal!
Velocity sensitivity can be dialed up through the VCA and VCF menus, I blew past this when talking about the Electric Piano patch.
While arpeggio's bring us in and out, I never call out that function or its settings. Notice the far left panel for those controls.

Nice presentation, and this is indeed a very, very, under-appreciated synth. It's a monster. One thing worth mentioning is how fun it is to play and program. 15 years ago nobody would even imagine an analog synth with these capabilities for less than 5 times the price of this thing.

I've owned a DM6 for a couple years now and love it so much and recently picked up DM12 with the intention of selling off the 6. However your patches have me rethinking that. I no longer lust after a Juno 106, nor do I regret selling off the Korg Polysix I used to own. I believe you have cured my G.A.S.. You are an international treasure and a gold mine of knowledge my friend. Thanks for all you do!

if this thing had a different brand name on it and was priced 4 times higher, people would totally praise this thing but because its behringer and this thing costs a 4th of a "good synth" people are dismissing it as a cheap product. very sad. This thing will go up in price in the future, that much is for sure. Its just that people cant justify owning their 3 grand synths anymore when a deepmind12 exists.

@@FranktheBlindArtistI’m from the Future Future.. Indeed the prices have gone up.. Like Apple, Behringer decided overnight that it was worth an extra €200 new.. Hence anyone that didn’t know the original price are marking up used models and making a few extra bucks over there original purchase price, and still got to enjoy the unit.. As for me, I had a price set in my head, and finally got a 6 month old unit for “€400” Happy days 👍🏼😎 Now I finally have it, I can’t find any reason why I would sell it in the Future Future Future 😂 It’s a friggen unit and a half.. A must buy for beginners to Analoge junkies.. Not just beautiful looking, but a beast in every sense of the word. Running MIDI from my Korg Wavestate to the Deepmind 12 and on to my baby Nord Lead 2X “Analog, Digital, and Digital Analog” What more could a Piano/ Keyboardist want.. Well, I’m still waiting on my fixed price Moog to enter the equation ☕️🎹🔉🎶🎵➰ Cheers 🇮🇪

Hey great video thanks! I have a dm12 on the way and excited to explore. Was curious. You said you would use it for live performance. What is or was your set up? Mainly what did you do if you needed piano parts? Did you bring along a laptop or iPad to link up to and control vsts?

this is one of the rare synths from Behringer worth picking up, for the price of 500 universal tokens. However, think about a decent multi effect processor - only multi effects unit should cost 500 or something like that - and this is TC Electronics - so, the rest of the synth is for free? :) It is a clumsy copy of Juno series, but it turned into something different. That mod matrix is terrible to dive in though, comparing it to REV2 or Peak, it is crap.

I really do feel like my studio is further ahead of what I’m even able to comprehend when I think about how I have behringers DM12, Model D, 303, all analog processing/amplification, and a guitar rig that’s bigger than the synth rig. I really feel like these instruments are going to get used by me in ways that I’m not even capable of conceptualizing at this point since its all been assembled within a year. Great video man! Great video showing off a superb synth. My entry into hardware synths was the Arturia Matrixbrute. A monster of course but probably not the best thing to start with. Then I bought the DM12 and was instantly making the noises I wanted....well, sort of :D Despite what some say about menu diving, it is actually very intuitive once you start and this synth actually taught me more about how to Battle the Brute! I mean, come on, the rotary organ sound alone is worth the purchase price...isn’t it? I think some people are maybe put off a little when trying the presets. They do seem to be drenched in reverb, but turn that down and you can create traditional 70’s keyboard sounds to semi modular shizzle to good old 80’s cheese...what’s not to like. Thanks for your video and I’m sure it will sell many DM12’s this year. Mr Behringer should put you on the pay roll ;) Great work, thank you.

Very nice piece on the DM12--probably one of the MOST underrated, versatile synths on the market today. The presets are crap. Load it with patches from a talented sound designer and you wont stop playing it. Menu diving is a pain (a consequence of the instruments versatility), but worth the learning curve. Its an astounding sounding instrument --that just happens to be very affordable. Its a workhorse in my studio.

This was so good. This was exactly the right level of production. It feels like I’m sitting in the room with you learning about your synth. Your philosophy of your gear is perfect. I love finding used gear that no-one else is looking for and buying it cheap. I also really appreciate hearing your thoughts on this synth especially knowing you’ve owned and played many of the big name synths. I’m one of those people who plays guitar, dabbles in piano and keys, and some daw/mpc synths. This seems like a great first step into standalone synths. I also wanted to say I like the long format. I’ve been typing this while listening your arpeggios from part 3. I appreciate the work you’re doing and i’m looking forward to more.

I own both the DM12 and the Prophet Rev2-16. Both are terrific synths that complement each other well but I gravitate more to the DM12 because it's very favorable to dreamy/spacey pads and ambient tones. It's very easy to play despite some menu diving but once you find that special sound it's very easy to get lost in its flowing sonic textures.

Hi Jorb, I'm new to the world of music synthesis but not to the world of music - I've been a bass and guitar musician for a long time. I'm a subscriber to your channel and I'd like to take you up on your request from the end of the video. I'd like to ask you to re-create the sound of Jack Casady's bass on White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. My understanding is this was done on a Fender Jazz bass - he did not have/use his alembic/Guild Starfire yet. Recorded at RCA studios in LA. Possibly, a lot of the tone is effects, but we'll see. I think I - we - would all learn a lot from seeing how you approach doing something like this. What would you choose? digital, analog, virtual analog? Which unit? How many oscillators and what wave shapes, how many and type of filter, use of mod matrix, effects, etc. I enjoy watching you work and your sharing of your knowledge. I currently have: a Hydrasynth desktop, novation summit, Deepmind 12 D, Behringer Pro 800, and a Microfreak - all purchased used - I like gear too. It would be great if you could use one of those so I could try and recreate your work - but ultimately, it's up to you, of course. If you find this a worthwhile request and challenge, perhaps you could go a little further and try to re-create Jorma's lead guitar sound as well. Thank you so much for your videos. I've learned a lot and I enjoy your spirit, presence, candor, knowledge and willingness to share. If you attempt this, I’d be pleased to leave a donation - your time and attention have value. Even if you don't make a video for this - perhaps you could send me tips for how to do it myself. Thank you, Joe

The DX7s and EX5 have yet to arrive as I ordered them from Japan on Ebay. My master controller keyboard is an M-Audio Keystation Pro 88. Love the keyboard. I also have a huge selection of VSTi instruments using Cubase 11. For my string libraries, I exclusively use 8DIO libraries. I also use their brass, woodwinds, percussion etc. Just great stuff all the way around. I love gear as well and my gear keeps me from going nuts lol. The bad thing: To get two detuned saws you need dual mode and are down to only 6 voices on the DM12. Almost as strange design choice as the Nord A1 but self explaining if you think that it is based on the old Juno series.

Even though the oscillators aren’t as “good” as the Pro 3, the DM12 is versatile... If you're comfortable with a few hurdles in regards to the deepmind presets, it has a higher potential ceiling for options overall. And not to be reductive, but 4 voices in the minilogue vs 6 or 12 on the deepmind, you would notice. I still happily recommend the original minilogue as a great first synth, the big difference is no digital osc like the XD, which is pretty fiddly for a new synthesist anyway. Straight forward, compact, very immediate.

USB mid in & out can go to hardware in, out, and through. When using ableton, deepmind is my only midi interface, the notes & control for 6 sound modules all comes through it. A small plus, but the octave switches change the midi notes coming from the keyboard, as opposed to the pitch of the oscillators, which isn't necessarily a given. I say yes!

Will most of these sounds be the same with the Deepmind 6? I understand that this is double the polyphony, great demo, the DM6 is more favourable to me because of the smaller form factor. Love the rotary organ with leslie sim, didn't expect that out of an analogue synth, hope the Deepmind 6 does that to.
@JorbLovesGear
@JorbLovesGear 4 жыл бұрын
The 6 can produce all of the same sounds, and for most of my playing, won't have any trouble keeping up with available notes. AND the organ is a preset patch! The organ in particular, without any long release it would be hard to run into a problem with note stealing anyways.

Blofeld is a very different beast, the question I'd recommend you answer first is if you're after sounds available with subtractive synthesis, or the flexibility of digital at the cost of some hands-on control and a slightly steeper learning curve. What are you hoping to get out of a keyboard?

@@JorbLovesGear hey Jorb. Thanks for getting back. I honestly played a few PPG's back in the day. I found them harsh and bright compared to my Jupiter 8. Of course thats obvious thing. But I've heard some really amazing pads (almost analogue sounding) from the Blofeld. My heart says Behringer deepmind 12. My head say Blofeld but you hit the nail on the noggin. I know analogue inside out having had so many. The learning curve of the Blofeld with its menus may put me off and make me use the synth as a preset machine.

Hehehe, and after a couple years of you explaining how great this synth is, I'm finally buying one. It was the synth that is in the nexus of: almost being as capable as my Matriarch but can save a preset, and also not costing more than the Matriarch. :) Other than using the control sequencer or the sample & hold LFO wave form to control the pitch of one of the oscillators, I think you've covered just about everything I'd want to know about this synth in one of your videos.

If you get one of these make sure you turn it off every time after use. I tend to leave my synths running for long stretches at a time .. and my DM12’s LCD display dimmed so low after a year it was barely readable. Hey Jorb (or anyone else), did you ever try to combine the low and the highpass filter with the mod matrix to get an Oberheim type of state variable filter? I cant get my head around how to do this. But it should be possible right?
@JorbLovesGear
@JorbLovesGear 3 жыл бұрын
I have tried it, in fact I scrapped a video about stealing some of the oberheim vibe, didn't make any good points. I tried in a few ways, some used the mood filter effect, which has a band pass to blend around. Or 2 effects on the mood milter, one high pass one low pass, and an lfo changing their mix opposite to each other, trying to blend simulate an lfo on a continuous filter type. Or the mod matrix to point lfo 2 to high pass amount. It can be quite hard to I guess, calibrate all of these to match / sound right, and in the the end is pretty convoluted...

@@JorbLovesGear New Jorb video: My failed attempt to make the Deepmind sound like an Oberheim. Would be interesting as well. Interesting points. I have to admit I almost never use the onboard effects of the DM. I was wondering how to make a smooth transition from low to highpass. But of course! LFO2 with a delay (delay = as long as it takes the lowpass to reach 127) and there you have it. Simple. Thanks for your inputs :)
