I think the simple knob per function of the Model D really helps to explore the basic fundamentals of sound design, an idea that's opened up much more on the DM with its individual sub menus, and then the crazy mod matrix! You can kind of split the keyboard by setting the range in the keyboard to cut off higher or lower notes, but then they still send midi so you can chain in another synth and play two different sounds on the keybed. Also the two pedal outputs can be set as cv gates.
@chuckvicious3 жыл бұрын
Also you can use the polychain function to play different tones on the keybed, like, if you set to poly 4 after you play 3 notes on the deepmind then the other notes will be played on the midi out.

When the Deepmind 12 came out I played it and the Novation Peak in the store. I wasn't that impressed by the Peak but I loved the Deepmind 12. Back then everyone was spewing hate on the Deepmind but I loved it. The reason I didn't buy it was that at the start of the following year the Korg Prologue was announced and the Prologue has split mode and more voices. Now I am back in the market for a Deepmind 12 to add to my set up. I only have 2 synths that are MIDI as the rest are all vintage pre MIDI synths so adding the Deepmind 12 to be sequenced using a MPC2000XL alongside the Prologue and my Moog would be ideal for me. Thank you for helping to reignite my interest in the Deepmind 12
@Studio-solutions-com3 жыл бұрын
Hey that's fantastic...!! Yeah, I have heaps of love for the Deepmind...! A split on these would be awesome, even with the relatively short keyboard... That's interesting about the Peak..! What were your thoughts on it???
@RoomAtTheTopStudio3 жыл бұрын
@@Studio-solutions-com I think that the main reason why I didn't like the Peak was because it's a desktop module. The Summit is a keyboard and it has split mode so it suits me. The fact that the Deepmind doesn't have split mode didn't bother me. It has keys and it was nice to play on. Probably another reason why I didn't get the Deepmind was because it wasn't 61 or more keys.

I've owned a DeepMind 12D for about 6 months now and here are my pros and cons: Pros: - Cheap, good build quality - Easy to program (except the FX), it can sound like a Juno, Jupiter-8 and even like an Oberheim to an extent (so it is a versatile synth). - It doesn't weigh that much. Cons: - Quite thin sounding (there is a boost but it makes the sound too muddy in the low end) although you can boost the low end with an EQ. - The FX aren't as user friendly to program as the rest of the synth. - The outputs are quite noisy, but I haven't owned any other analogue synths other than DM12 yet so I can't tell if this is a DM12 thing or if this is how analogue gear sounds. - No sawtooth on OSC 2, to get dual sawtooths you have to use unison-2 mode, which will make voice stealing a problem even on DM12. - No PWM (afaik) on OSC 2 either. - The VCF resonance is one of the worst I've heard on a synth. It sounds harsh and you lose some low end when you utilize it. - No VST editing software & browser. - HORRIBLE factory presets. Buy third party ones or make your own patches. Overall, it is a good synth despite some of its shortcomings. Great synth for beginners or people with a limited budget.

Fantastic overview of a brilliant synth. I only recently picked up a DeepMind 12 and I have been blown away by the sounds, fx and general capabilities of this wonderful synth. I've had loads of gear over the years from Korg, Yamaha, Roland etc, but to me this is one of the most expressive synths I've ever had the pleasure to play. Some of the sounds are just amazing and the editing capabilities so deep, it does what is says on the tin as they say! But yes I agree also re the key-bed, if feels fine to me. I've been a keyboard player for over 30 years and it plays fine in fact better than my Roland FA and also the Yamaha MODX, which has a shockingly bad key-bed, although a great synth, but the Behringer is a perfectly playable and well balanced key-bed, with after touch, something you only get on synths cost well over £2k with the Rolands, Yamaha's and Korgs,. Well done Behringer on packing so much into such a relatively cheap instrument, but one with so much power. Anyway thanks for the review and you are right this thing could replace so much in my studio too!
@Studio-solutions-com3 жыл бұрын
Hey Nigel, thank you for such a great comment! It's nice to hear the opinion of keyboarderist re the feel of those semi weighted keys, that's great...! Behringer certainly knocked it out of the park with this synth, and it just keeps on giving too with the virtually unlimited mod-matrix routings... It's interesting to see the price being compared with those particular three, Korg, Roland and Yamaha, all of which were fined in court for being guilty of price fixing...! So who can say, sure, Behringer CAN make gear at low cost because they also manufacture the components themselves, but surely everyone could also afford to drop their artificially inflated prices...? 😉

Its growing on me but after I invested in some separate sound banks that was properly programmed and gave me a starting point. The factory presets are somewhat strange and not so musical. The keybed is kind of ok for a synth action. Semi-weight surprised me but the black keys are way more muted than the whites so the velocity curve differs between them. Also the keys themself dont allow too hard playing or you can hear cracks and strange sounds from when the key has travelled to the bottom. Otherwise great first analog polysynth for anybody. Glad I started with this instead of a rev 2 or Summit actually.

You seem to be pretty active in these comments so I figured it’s worth asking here, but should I buy the DM6 at the more affordable price or the DM12 for more power? It’d be my first real analog synth, so I don’t really know what exactly what my needs are, but would the note stealing and lack of voices in the 6 really be that much of a limitation or would it be powerful enough for a beginner despite its limitations? Mainly just don’t want to buy a synth and then wish I had shelled out the extra couple hundred because I run into limitations in its capability.
@Studio-solutions-com3 жыл бұрын
Great question Joe...! One observation I've noticed is that DM12's hold better prices for resale, which isn't great for a buyer, but reassuring if you have doubts lol I'd say it largely depends on your playing as to how obvious the voice stealing would be, if you like to use both hands for chords at the same time then it might be more noticeable... For what it's worth I never felt it a limitation until I compared the sound of them both side by side like this. The 6 is still very powerful though, and I can say for sure that you'll still be blown away by it!

@@Studio-solutions-com Thank you for responding to his question, I had the same one. At about 850 USD quite often from Sweetwater and other retailers it also seems incredible for a brand new 12 voice synth. I haven't seen anything else competitive on price to features there, most of the Korgs and so on at or below that price have fewer voices and features. I'm not much of a keyboard player so I can't really get that nitpicky on the keys, but I still like playing out chord progressions and simple melodies on an indulgent pad, lead, or keys patch to relax and while I'm brainstorming; so it'll be nice to have them. And it sounds like in terms of controlling it from a pc for designing and recording more complex patches, I can rely on this modern release to play nicely with its own app and a DAW right out of the box and hooked up to my audio interface and PC. I'm guessing the aftertouch on the keyboard is channel instead of poly though. Would be great to see Behringer copy the clever and mechanically simple poly aftertouch design of the SQ80 on a future revision.
@Studio-solutions-com3 жыл бұрын
It is unfortunately channel, I guess even Behringer can't pull poly aftertouch out of the bag at this price!! It sounds like our key abilities are about the same, chords and simple melodies, basslines etc... lol 12 voice analogue, just can't be beat can it...! I agree about Korg, they've always had a good competitive edge on pricing too, and have some great synths available right now, but the DM is just too good not to have in your arsenal!!

Hello krs-t, here is my question: I have played live with the Juno 106 for 4 years now, bought it used about 7 years ago. It held up fine for the first few years, but then the voice chip issues began, then came other issues that inevitably come hand in hand with such an old piece of equipment. My band mates are now pressing me to invest on a new synth to play live. I am very scared to do so, as i enjoy the simplicity of the Juno 106, i am the lead singer and play synth, and the Juno just made my playing easier, as it is so straightforward. However, i understand that it is no longer reliable. It is a great studio synth, but not adequate to play live. Ive been digging into good alternatives that dont lack in sound but are also as straightforward as the Juno 106. I own a Deep Mind 6. I havent gotten round to actually going deep with it. I have been debating on which synth to invest on (i am quite limited financially though), and my top choices so far, to accompany the Deep Mind 6 live are the JU-06a and the roland gaia. I understand they are quite different. But in your expert opinion, which one do you think will be more straightforward, whilst maintaining a richness of sound that The Juno 106 has? I am sorry for the long exposing of my question, i wanted to propose a full scenario of my situation. I have a concert next week, and the Juno is still in the hospital, so i am quite pressed on what to do. I have borrowed from a friend the Prophet 6 but i obviously cannot use it long term. Thank you. Great channel!
@Studio-solutions-com3 жыл бұрын
Hi there Genufildo, and many thanks for following my Channel! I'm far from an expert on these however! Lol The Gaia and the JU-06A are completely different, I agree... I would be tempted to contrast the analogue tones of the Deepmind with the sounds of the Gaia for access to a wider sonic pallette! From the perspective of playing live too, the Gaia may be easier to operate on stage as the layout is larger than that of the Boutique. Have you had an opportunity to compare both together in a store?
@Bananahammockingbird3 жыл бұрын
@@Studio-solutions-com thank you so much for your quick answer! Unfortunately where I live there arent any music stores that have synths, i have to order them online basically “blindfolded”. But I do think you are suggesting what I’m most inclined towards: combining the Deep Mind with the Gaia might be absolutely phenomenal for the sounds i am looking for. Ever since writing my question here this morning, i spent focused on exploring the Deep Mind. Truly a great synth, a bit basic but does the job. The gaia might add the organic sound I am looking for that the Juno carried. Have you played a Gaia. Would you say its a good purchase?
@Studio-solutions-com3 жыл бұрын
@@Bananahammockingbird I haven't tried either of those two I'm afraid, but if you find the operation of the Deepmind to be basic then I think you may soon be disappointed with the JU-06A Especially since much of its sound is something which you already have available to you with the Deepmind, whereas with the Gaia you are bringing something new to the table. What type of music do you play? Have you considered something slightly more contrasting to expand your options further? Not necessarily something digital, but hybrid perhaps? The JD-Xi is in a similar price bracket to the Gaia but offers analogue/digital crossover..?
@Goettel3 жыл бұрын
I'd say get a second hand Deepmind 12 to find out if it can fill the same sound slot as the Juno, for you. If it does (it does for me), you won't regret it. The JU-06a is four voice polyphonic, which is moronic IMO. The Gaia has a good sound, but three octaves - which won't do if you like playing big chords. Of the three, I'd say the DM is the only one that might be a future classic, and I wouldn't trade it for any Juno (or I'd trade it for a Juno, sell that and buy back three DM's ; - )
