Just for reference, in the novel "death troopers" an imperial prison guard shot his superior officer in the face with two E-11 blaster rifles and his head literally exploded. To quote the scene in the novel; "Warden Kloths entire cranial vault sheared away in a dense cloud of scarlet, gristle, and bone. his neck and shoulders flopped sideways, torqued on some invisible axis with the leftover momentum from the energy blast, and then landed in a wet splat, skitting backwards in the spattered reservoir of blood." 9:33 obviously depending on the brand, caliber, and current market value of a cartridge. 500 rounds of ammunition isnt actually that expensive, most cartridges (pre-covid) usually never got past $1 a round, so unless you really hate your first born, wouldn't have to go to that lengths to buy 500 rounds. Take it from a person that may or may not be hoarding close to 100,000 rounds of assorted ammunition somewhere in my home........ ;)

Copper tubing/pipe, .. As a country boy I built angle slop boxes and hang then from trees to see if bats will roust in them. Had some high thick branch trees which bats nested in during their migration seasonal trips. First year I just dump a few bags of lime stone sand/ gravel on plastic around the base of the trees, second year I hung up the boxes, my grand parents were fine with a few dozen bats but not hundreds the following years. I also hung up water bottles and we had fruit trees. Grandpa got me into model rockets at an early age. Along with egg muskets, .. plastic pipe, baking soda/ vinegar, load egg, level/aim .. wait .. wait .. there goes the egg. All about timing and fuel measurement, and those eggs hurt. Then spent a few years learning arc ranges in the back field. I really wish I keep those note books on indirect fire. Breech loaded steel pipes are fun too.

The closest thing to blasters that humanity currently has would be railguns. Although plasma railguns that work like we see in Star-Wars do exist but only on paper. The science is sound but the only thing holding us back is the power supply. I doubt that we'd ever see them used as infantry weapons in the near future or ever.

@twistedyogert

@@OldSchoolZ-wy2yx That would literally kill you. High energy neutrons would be the main killer. Although a large enough radioisotope power source could be used. It would be heavy and need to be carried in a backpack. You'd probably look more like a ghostbuster then a soldier. The backpack would contain the radioisotope power generator and voltage and current regulator circuits. The actual gun itself would contain the super-capacitor banks and the cooling unit to prevent barrel erosion.

for military logistics, the lightweight and cheap ammo is the real selling point. If you can charge your powerpack anywhere there is a power outlet, you just have to worry about the tabana gas. Since it is so cheap, it is probably very easy to refine/manufacture in the Star Wars galaxy, and you don't have thousand of different types of ammunitions like with solid projectile weapons
@PutYourQuarterUpGaming
@PutYourQuarterUpGaming 6 ай бұрын
Ya but, lead, steel and copper gotta be more abundant and cheap when have an entire galaxy to mine it, only expensive on earth cos they’re finite resources. Not to mention, it makes no logisitical sense, I’m sorry but it doesn’t. Like either way gotta req supplies for your army, so what do you want? Something essentially requires two independent sources of “ammo”, or something uses the rounds you’ve ordered. Like real soldiers aren’t fumbling around with an AR looking for the right ammo, why have supply lines and dudes like ammo sergeants 😂 No, it’s sci fy, it makes no logical sense to choose that over ballistic/explosive which are relatively as effective, but it doesn’t matter cos Star Wars = rule of cool. Like, especially when deployed in large numbers.

Hopefully this will end in a nuanced take. Neither a blaster or a firearm is always better. A blaster can hold more ammunition for the same space. More firearms can fire faster. Blasters can vary the amount of power used. Firearms are better against Jedi. Blasters can do things like stun. Firearms shoot faster. Blasters are harder to protect against. There are the points raised in '10 Reasons Why Firearms are BETTER than Blasters' by Generation Tech. TLDR both have upsides and downsides.

@KelebMoonDancer 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthiuskoenig3378 Incorrect, canon states that lightsabers would melt the slugs and cause them to shrapnel melted steel all over the user. Slugthrowers also (tend) to fire faster projectiles. Altought fast firing blasters designed as snipers too were unblockable. It doesnt matter how good you are in the force if the enemy has the right weapons, hell there are even blades that can shortcircuit lightsabers on contact. Only reason lightsabers are even a threat in the republic era, is because tech has regressed since older times, and most people dont even deal with lightsabers often. Jedi and Sith are terrifying because of the force dealing direct and unstopable damage to non force users. But the lightsaber was never a good counter against projectiles.

A rather interesting experience I had with this topic is the star wars mod for ARMA3 a highly realistic modern military simulator. The mod faithfully models the disgusting prktection from traditional kinetic weaponry star wars full body armour provides, as well as the excessive magazine capacity, light ammunition, no bullet drop, impressive barrier penetration, and yes, realtively low muzzle velocity and refire rate of the blasters. They are in general significantly easier to use, than real weaponry.

Great video. Even if Blasters were less deadly, less accurate and less rugged than traditional firearms (they're not, but even if they were) that wouldn't matter. The greatest strength of the blaster is the fact that battery packs are stupidly cheap, had enormous capacity, and you never had to reload. Blasters overheating isn't even really a negative over Slugthrowers, since anyone familiar with firearms can tell you: real world firearms overheat too. Quite easily in fact.

In the right conditions a slugthrower is actually MORE effective than a blaster against a Jedi: a lightsaber can deflect a blaster bolt, but a slug just melts without losing any speed. Of course this assumes the Jedi isn't wearing armor or doesn't notice you have a slugthrower: an armored Jedi will shrug off the shot and find it cute, and one that notices you have a slugthrower will rip it out of your hands with the Force. Otherwise you're just better using a stupidly powerful blaster that can push away the Jedi's lightsaber, his surprise at the situation may allow you to shoot THEM (see Jango Fett on Geonosis).

For reference, the common wisdom for an ammo loadout for an AR-15 type rifle is 6 mags on the vest/belt plus 1 in the gun, leading to a total of 210 rounds (assuming standard 30 round mags) so a single E-11 or similar blaster holds more ammo than two guys with a typical AR-15 loadout.

The problem with "heat beams"/lasers as infantry weapons is that even though you'd think they would be easy to aim, they would actually be extremely difficult to use effectively. In order to get through armor, the beam would have to be concentrated on a single part of the armor for half a second or more. Against a moving target you'd probably just end up clipping the target or slashing the beam across their surface, which would deal relatively superficial damage. A weapon with a blast effect on impact would have much more stopping power.

Five kilometer shots (a little over THREE MILES???) with projectiles that have absolutely no ballistic rise and drop like real-world bullets fired from high-powered rifles??? That’s still a tall, TALL order. Not even non-ballistic blaster bolts are immune to having to factor in the Coriolis Effect (the way the curvature/contour of the Earth/Planet you’re operating the weapon on factors in to your marksmanship - when you get to distances THAT big, you always have to factor in Coriolis.) In fact, if anything, the projectiles being TRULY straight shooting and 100% non-ballistic makes them even MORE susceptible to defeat from the Coriolis Effect. Bullets rise and fall. Gravity keeps them moving downward to the Earth - so they’re never going to just seem to rise up in the air and fuck off into the deep sunset (leaving you bemused, AND giving away your position and intent.) But blaster bolts can’t be phased by things like gravity (or the geometry of the planet.) And uhh… Idk if that’s necessarily a good thing.

Honestly it's a right tool for the right job kind of situation like we get with the real world. For example if we were in close quarters I would prefer something Han's blaster or a Storm Trooper's blaster. But on a battlefield, engaging something like clone troopers, yeah give me rifle like an M-16 all day long. Yeah the bullets drop, they don't have the same range, and they may not even do as much damage as a blaster. But they most FAR faster down range and they don't glow bright colors. I'd prefer to blast down as many of the enemy as I can and that means not letting them know where I'm shooting from. Not to mention that at 100 meters, you could effectively side step an incoming blaster bolt. Judging by the speed they move on screen, that means cannon, they are flying around the same speed as a major league baseball pitch. So 90mph-ish and they glow bright colors? No wonder Jedi can reflect them so easilly.

Even though Star Wars is fictional, you cannot ignore physics. Blaster bolts would be affected by gravity just as bullets are I real life, so they would fall as they slowed. And seeing as how the blaster bolts move much, much slower than a bullet, their range would be less. And as for being able to deflect bullets with a light saber, I doubt that would be possible (using the science and mytho of the Star Wars universe). A 9mm bullet travels in the area of 1100 FPS at close range, that is about 750 mph. A .556 travels at around 3600 FPS at close range, that is about 2100 mph. I don’t think that Jedi have the kind of skill to deflect something moving that fast, especially if fired from a full auto setting. “Slug throwers” will be the dominant hand held weapon until some sort of disruptor is invented that can kill a person by striking any part of their body. Like Col Jack O’Neill said when comparing the Jaffa staff weapon to a P90. The staff weapon is a weapon (or blaster) of fear, it is meant to intimidate your enemy, the P90 (slug thrower) is a weapon of war, it is meant to kill your enemy. No doubt that when it comes to small arms, today’s small arms are much more superior to Star Wars’ blasters.

Babylon5 tv series, " The military had to develop a pistol that could take a person down without causing an air breach in the ship's hull." As for the Jedi in writing an in film, their .. precognition .. allows him to move their sabers into blocking location at the moment the shooter pulls the trigger. Think of it as Spiderman's spider sense of knowing where you are about to receive an injury. Then blocking that area of your body. Problem is, full auto with a anti vehicle heavy rifle lays down A Lot of bullets within a 5in sq space. AND .. IF .. you manage it block a single head on incoming bullet, it will have a good chance of pushing the light saber into it's wielder's body.

It's also important to note that while slug throwers were overall not much use against lightsabers (with the exception of bowcasters) slug shotguns were still fairly effective as you can't deflect all the pellets and trying would usually result in super heating the remaining material as they reached the body. This wasn't an issue for jedi if, like Obi-Wan did, they wore armor but most knights didn't.

Jedi still have a variety of means to protect themselves much more easily from ballistic weapons than blaster bolts. One thing that came up during the Clone Wars was Jedi wearing armor into battle, Obi Wan Kenobi especially chose to wear Clone Trooper Plastoid plates. While Plastoid isn't Blaster proof, it is essentially impervious to conventional bullets, and indeed a lot of body armor in the galaxy was also this way. Blocking is also a tactic that is used more as a convenience rather than a Jedi's only means of defense. Force users are fast enough to move faster than a person's aim, so the added ability to get past blocking doesn't get through a Jedi's first three layers of defense: Don't be detected, Don't be seen, and Don't get hit. It's no wonder then that HK 47 never recommends slugthrowers to kill Jedi, but rather high explosives, and also lethal gases. These are weapons that overcome the evasion rather than the lightsaber of a Jedi, something especially true when pretty much every force user that short of Darth Vader is to some degree a lightning bruiser that avoids getting hit in the first place rather than try to charge through concentrated fire.

Unless they're made of something like Beskar, Cortosis, or Phrikh (not entirely sure how to spell that one), they almost certainly would vaporize. I think much of the fan complaints about blasters come about not because of personal shields, Beskar or lightsabers, but instead because how during the Clone Wars, series and movies, even B1 droids are regularly shown withstanding at least a couple blaster bolts before finally getting killed/destroyed. And how often we’ll see a B1 withstand multiple hits from a DC-15, but another has a hole punched through it from 0 yards away by a blaster pistol. There’s a lot of lore related to blasters, but in content their implementation is a very mixed bag, but thank you for this video, it’s extremely informative. To help clarify vehicle weapons, could you do a breakdown explaining the difference between light/medium/heavy blaster cannon and laser cannons, as well as turbo lasers. Some content creators seem to treat them as being used interchangeable, while others make point of occasionally differentiating one type from another.

It's also very important to note that since a slug/bullet/arrow is a solid object, it is then subject to all other laws of real physics such as gravity, wind, air resistance, etc. Since blaster bolts are pure concentrated energy, this is a non-factor, thus making the accuracy of a blaster more or less only subject to production quality and user ability. Even the most skilled real world archers and marksmen will occasionally miss shots not because they made a mistake but merely because there were too many factors outside of their control.

@@samueldimmock694 Well, I already commented about this topic in a different vein once, but I'll mention it again with a side note: Vaporization is not an instantaneous process. Even with non-space science magic, we can attain muzzle velocities well over a thousand meters a second (and that's just counting civilian rounds). The proposed bullet in this scenario would be exposed to the relatively thin lightsaber blade for somewhere in the thousandths of a second. We wouldn't need to jump all the way to a .50 Cal to find rounds that have the grit to continue existing in at least a liquid form even after passing through. Also, plasma's a very touchy state of matter, you can't just plasmafy anything. Even after all of this, we also have to consider the godly metals they have access to in the Star Wars universe as well, it ain't just steel and iron out in the cosmos, a bullet made of Beskar (not that the Mandalorian's would ever do this) wouldn't give a snot about such a trifling, single exposure to a lightsaber.
@samueldimmock694
@samueldimmock694 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ashe_Blackflight I've learned more about how lightsabers supposedly work, and while I think the explanation is a pretty poor one, it does answer this question pretty well. Basically, the lightsaber beam is tightly contained and doesn't leak energy out into the world to melt things; instead, some inexplicable space magic property of the lightsaber causes the blade to oscillate in some way, and this oscillation produces enough friction with whatever it comes into contact with to burn through metal, as well as creating a strong repulsive force when it hits anything other than another lightsaber blade. Consequently, unless the bullet hit the midline of the lightsaber blade exactly, it would almost certainly be deflected to the side, and either way it would probably either melt or shatter or both. That said, a sufficiently powerful and accurate (or lucky) gun might very well knock the lightsaber out of the Jedi's hand, but with the Force guiding that hand, I wouldn't take those odds. The mechanics don't make much sense to me, but oh well. I guess a world where physics works differently is bound to have some extremely weird things, like recoilless Death Stars.
