I really relate to the exhaustion that comes with CONSTANTLY thinking about weight, body, food, calories. I have maintained a 40 lbs weight loss but have gone up about 10 pounds over the Winter (NZ) and it's really bugging me but I'm struggling to lose it again. I'm so sick of thinking about it! I've been thinking about weight for about 25 years.

Right? You can SEE excess fat, at least on a lot of body types. It's not just the BMI charts. Like, you can pinch the rolls of fat. You can see the body underneath the rolls. One measure of obesity is done with calipers, measuring how much fat can be pinched on different parts of the body.

@Cat_Woods
@Cat_Woods 9 ай бұрын
@@olive872 It's one measure, as I mentioned, done with calipers. If you're close to underweight, I'm sure your measure would be very low. I didn't say that if the measure is greater than zero that person is overweight. It's just one measure, with a spectrum of applicability. The point is that the difference between someone who has 100 lbs of excess fat and someone who has less than 10 is visible. The fat activists claim that you can't tell anything about health by looking at someone. Yes you can. You can't tell everything. But you can tell that someone with several hundred pounds of excess fat is over a healthy weight.

When she said it’s all to do with lifestyle I completely got that. As someone who has changed lifestyle frequently in the past few years you can really see it. I was always pretty overweight since high school, in 3rd year uni I went on exchange overseas. My whole lifestyle was different in that country and I lost all my excess weight in that time. When I got home, I gained some again and my mental health also plummeted. After that I reduced my uni study load and took some time to myself. Again, lost a bunch of weight and was probably underweight because I had so much time I was just walking everywhere and was living with my partner in the city half the time (which is a lot more walkable compared to my home in the suburbs). This year, I moved out of home to another suburb, had to do an intense year of study and write my thesis plus took on an extra job. I thought I could at least maintain my weight. Nope, I gained 30+ kg just this year…your stress levels, your occupation, the lifestyle of your city 100% makes so much difference!!!!

Your diet is what ever you eat, be it mindful or not, "healthy diet" or "unhealthy diet" Our culture is full of trying to influence your diet, fast food advertising is lodged into our subconscious minds at every turn. Some foods make it easier to stay in a calorie deficit (vegetable rich meals, legumes, healthy fat foods like plain yogurt and avocado, oats). Other foods make it very difficult, (smoothies /shakes aka liquid calories, cakes, ice cream, cookies, deep fried foods, chips). Just my 2¢. IF you have a balcony or a garden with appropriate sunshine requirements, you can grow homemade veggies during the summer in a Rubbermaid tote box. Think abt swiss chard or zucchinis. Granted, you have to have the space and the tiniest amount of time to tend to a small scale container garden but growing fresh organic veggies aint impossible! :) Again I recognize that not everyone has this opportunity where they live.

You could likely do it in an apartment without balcony if having appropriate light. There was a documentary on Endevr (another YT channel) about fruit and vegetables have been refined to purpose of having longer shelflife but it has been done on them being having way less nutrition. So a hobby of growing a couple of potted heirloom vegetables could be so beneficial.

Regarding the point near the end of the video about how no one is looking at you - this was one of the biggest things that was hammered into me in therapy. I had a psychiatrist who asked me why I felt that I was so important that other people would analyze me and stare at me and criticize me. He asked me who is so important to me that when I see them, I analyze/stare/criticize their body. It really put everything into perspective because I never think that way about others so why would others think that way about me. And if someone is so obsessed with me that they’d criticize my appearance, that says more about them than it does me. It was a huge wake up call, to finally realize that no one else is looking at me or thinking about me, and I’m not so important that I must be perfect to leave the house. It’s easier to really internalize this mindset by your late 20s and 30s though, because when I was a teen or most of my 20s, I definitely wouldn’t have reacted well when my psychiatrist said that stuff. Later I overheard one of them talking about how annoying I was, because either way I was still skinny. Little did she know that I had an eating disorder, and while I had lost the weight in a somewhat unhealthy way, I was gaining it back in a worse way - by binging on thousands of calories a day. As someone who has been fixated on their weight an body image from a very early age, as someone who has dealt with disordered eating, not knowing what I'm doing, failing, trying again, losing weight, gaining it back...a big problem I think many people gloss over is this fixation on losing a pound a week. More people are becoming aware of the difference between crash dieting which results in gaining the fat back and "sustainable" fat loss, but do they really understand what that means? It's not just taking months and months like John said, it's losing fat in periods of caloric restriction over the course of...years!!! You go into a fat loss phase for three or four months, and then you go into maintenance mode for just as long, IF NOT LONGER, than you were restricting in order to bounce back from the fatigue of restriction. Most of us have been there. You restrict hard, and the crackback hits you harder, and you restrict harder, etc etc. You need time to focus hard, and time to recover. Elite athletes and performers aren't performing at that level for months and months without a break. You lose some fat, then you get to live in a new normal for a while and not focus so much on fat loss. Then you go into another fat loss phase, if that's your goal. Losing fat, seeing the number on the scale go down, controlling what goes in your mouth and what movement you do, it can be addicting, and it can take you to the dark side if you don't get the results you want as fast as possible. But you can't do it all in one go, and you can't expect your body to change any faster than you can change your long term habits and develop "sustainable" ones. What does that even mean, does it mean forever or just for as long as you have perfect attention to what you're doing? It has to become basically automatic. I, too, am sometimes frustrated by the knowledge that I will always have to be vigilant about what I eat to keep my weight consistent. But after years of seeking out more knowledge, practicing what I'm learning, and incorporating habits that contribute to my goals, and now having a lot of knowledge around what foods and portion sizes and activity works for my TDEE, it's less of a battle. I already know what to do, what supports my goals, and I don't tend to act against my own goals. (Do you?) The behaviors have basically become automatic, but not on accident. I practiced and practiced and practiced, on purpose, until I got pretty decent at understanding and applying what I've learned through experimentation and from experts I trust. I pay attention to the details but I don't go to extremes. The real struggle is in getting enough protein, to be honest. And it is frustrating to be on the shorter side and have a lower BMR, but to address that, I have put on muscle and make it a priority to keep muscle on my frame so that I can eat more! Also, the best of what knowledge I've gained has come from Mike Israetel's lectures on fat loss over on Renaissance Periodization, as well as his lectures on hypertrophy. Best of luck to everyone out there. If you're struggling to start, just eat 150-250 calories less a day (which you can't know unless you track, so unfortunately, you have to track) and start going on a 5-10 minute walk, and don't expect yourself to just become a new person and change your whole life in a short interval. It happens a little bit at a time.

There are specialist that can help through blood analysis. The more you know your body the more you can work with your body. People who try everything under the sun and still gain weight back often have something more genetic at play even though many health enthusiasts may think otherwise. Genetics, body structure, thyroid levels, hormones, even bone structure can influence how you lose and gain weight and where that weight is distributed in your body. It’s not always calorie deficit and exercise. Sometimes it can be as simple as eating more protein or as complex as PCOS. I hope this helps ❤️ I wish you luck but know who you are on the inside is what matters the most, yes being healthy is good and important but if it’s making you stress and obsess it’s ok to take a step back for awhile and come back to it later, there is no shame in that.

for me right now my fatness isnt even about how i look at all. im about 30-40 lbs over-weight (180 when i 'should be' around 140... im basing where i 'should be' off of the weight i always was in the past that i was able to comfortably maintain and felt like i was at my best at that weight without feeling like i was starving myself or restricting) now i dont think i look horrible (i def am carrying extra weight but like im not hideous lol) but I feel very uncomfortable in my body. especially this summer carrying t he extra weight i feel like i get sweaty easier and its harder to wear nice loose airy clothing or like i used to wear really short shorts and tank tops or cropped tops in the summertime that now i feel like im rolling out of them even when i buy a size up proper size it just doesnt feel comfortable to wear them really... like that part is a little bit about 'the look' and aesthetics but again more about feeling uncomfortable like the skin-on-skin feeling of having extra rolls or love handle creases popping out and just not feeling comfortable mentally either with having more skin showing when you have less rolls you feel like theres less skin on display and i dont feel like i have to be as modest. I have been trying to work on my weight for a few months now and i feel like i have toned up a little bit but according to the scale have not lost any actual weight in lbs so i guess i need to keep working at it. (ive been trying to be more active but i know for sure there are also some dietary improvements i need to make. i fell into some bad habits that i never used to have and now its hard to break them... too much icecream ! lol)

Just a thought that crossed my mind watching this video: If the "healthy at every size" movement was doing commentary videos, they would probably pick this one to show the toxicity of the diet culture (the original one). This poor girl needs a psychologist not a dietician. She is trying to fix with drastic diet something that can only be improved by a therapy. She said she was happy at some point with her weight but she also admitted anorexia and other disorders. She is not talking about improving her lifestyle, but getting results fast for whatever cost and at the same time she's scared of non bio branded apple. I wish her the best, I wish her the success in her weight loss journey and I sincerely hope once she achieves her goal weight she 1. won't want to continue losing & 2. will really find the happiness she thinks it's going to bring.

It really depends on your height because 1200-1400 is a lot of food for me. I lost 70lbs since Feb, am down to a healthy weight finally after a decade of obesity, and since I started eating a reasonable amount for my height I now have strength, endurance, and energy like never before. Whereas when I was obese I was eating like 3000 calories every day and was having dizzy spells, my vision would go black if I stood too fast, and was sick all the time (edit: and had 0 energy, I was exhausted constantly) I’m 5’2” and am finally eating a good amount of food for my body size (around 1200calories sometimes less, rarely more) even though I’ve also massively increased my energy usage by doing HIIT and walking daily. It is dangerous for me to rely on more calories because that’s how I became obese and sick. So we really have to be careful when saying “no one should eat less than this” or whatever. 🙏🏻

Wow… as someone with ADHD/anxiety who’s struggled with EDs since I was 14 (I’m 29 now), I relate to this SO MUCH. CW: weight in lbs, body image. My heart went out to her when she felt the need to explain herself when she called herself fat, worrying that others might try to discredit her feelings because she’s not super obese… I have felt the same way so many times in my life when I’ve wanted to lose 10-20lbs, even though I’ve never technically been overweight (I’m 5’6” and I’ve fluctuated between 120-150 as an adult). It’s taken me a really long time to find what works for me for weight loss/maintenance. For the longest time I felt like I needed to be 115-120 (the lowest weight that is technically considered a “healthy” BMI at my height - I know, I know, BMI is not the best measuring tool). And hyperfixating on that specific, low weight devastated my self-image and isolated me from my peers. I’m at a point now where I feel happy and healthy (I’m somewhere in the 130s, around a size 4), and I can attribute my peace of mind to having a ROUTINE and keeping my fitness goals SIMPLE. What I do won’t work for everyone (and John, I appreciate you making the point that everyone’s mind/body works differently), but if I had to give my two cents to anyone struggling: 1) walking is SUPER underrated exercise/helps manage my anxiety, and 2) sticking to a routine makes sticking to a diet SO much easier, whether it’s for weight loss or maintenance. Thanks again for your insight, John.

This is not even something you would be able to measure due to changes like water in your body, when you last had a shit or piss, in which state of your period cycle you are and so on 😂 I can't take it seriously like the rest of your environment. You can get expect people to support you in this BS. Especially if there are people with serious problems around

@. Why do you assume people don’t know how to do it? I measure myself everyday using bioempidance scale that record directly to my phone providing stats and graphs, every single morning after bathroom. It’s not daily fluctuations but TREND overtime. You KNOW when you gain a kg more. It’s all in the data too - increase in fat percentage, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, while other things such as muscle mass, water etc remain constant. I also track my period and know how much water retention that my body usually has during tbe period. Again, it’s all in the data. I don’t expect people to believe but I expect people to have respect. For the fact that you have made an assumption, clearly you have never tested it/do it yourself to speak from experience to know the detail extent what is truly a gain or what is just fluctuations in water, food, etc.
