Infamous preacher Phil Arms went viral for a funny sermon about Pokemon being demonic. While blind reacting to the video as a treat, I discovered the sinister backstory behind the church Phil ran like a cult where he pocketed church money to fund his narcotic addiction.

@@otomachiunagi4208 You are right, there are different sects, different versions, different subversions of all these religions. Some are YEC, some are some flavor of OEC. All of these are some flavor of the jw religion. It is like software: people take the original and change it and change it some more. You end up with all sorts of versions. Which one is the true religion? Not even the j god knows.

I mean you could say the same thing about Christianity - it’s materially a bastardized offshoot of Judaism, complete with branches of its own. For example, not all Catholics believe in predestination. The anabaptist tradition could be seen as another branch. And this isn’t even mentioning sects like Episcopalian.

Children are always dressing up. My son (at the age of 3yo) put on his older sister's ballet tutu (without her leotard because it never occurred to him) and was naked from the waist down) and ballet shoes when he stood in front of us (and some friends) to a chorus of "Aww! So CUTE!" from the adults! It didn't make him transgender. He adored his big sister and was just dressing up as all children do. My daughter cos-played Winry Rockbell (at the age of 12yo - we spent ages helping her make the costume) from "Full Metal Alchemist - Brotherhood". Voice actor Vic Mignogna was lovely at ComicCon - and said "Winry!" to her and gave her a big hug. Aww! Pokémon are wonderful for children.

I can remember my grandmother and her sister watching this guy on videotape. We happened to be there when they watched THIS sermon. My mom pulled me into the other room made me go outside with my dad because I couldn’t stop laughing (particularly after the Russian Roulette quote). I remember feeling a tug on the back of my sweatshirt when I snorted-telling me to get out of the room. (My parents had a a “Keep you mouth shut and laugh about it on the car later” rule when weird religious stuff was brought up.) I was never the favorite grandchild simply due to my inability to stare at the ground and keep a straight face. Admittedly, it may have also been because of the time my grandmother caught me reading Harry Potter with a paper book jacket from a Bible around it.

@EmmaThorne I think he was able to get away with this because it was before the current laws about prescriptions and narcotics were made. These days, narcotics are tracked much more carefully. The fact that this was the THIRD time; left me wondering about the first two times he got caught! This story demonstrates what narcotics do to a person's thinking! Years ago, my chronic pain issues were treated with narcotics. At one point, I was taking so much that my doctor told me he could not prescribe more without admitting me to the hospital first! So I have first hand knowlege of how narcotics remove your moral resistance to doing things that you should not. It numbs you to the point where you cannot see the potential consequences of your actions. It also muddies your ability to think in a way that you can only discern AFTER you are off of the narcotics! When I went cold-turkey (under medical supervision) to get off the narcotics, I had a day or so of extreme clarity where I could look back and see the difference in my thinking! The thing that shocked me the most was how unaware I was of the problem while I was taking the narcotics! That is one of the factors that makes it so hard for people to quit. They cannot even see the problems that the people around them see. That does not excuse the behavior, it is just a factor that I do not see being talked about very often. Yet it is important for those dealing with loved ones who are addicted to understand why it is so hard to get through to them that they are in danger. For those that are currently struggling with addiction (and pain too) : You can break free with the help of a competent doctor and some of the newer medications like suboxone. These days, my pain is under control (not gone, but reduced enough most of the time to be tolerable). And I no longer have to feel that hunger for the narcotics or worry about my pain meds not working. I also use a combination of the skills I learned from mindfulness training, biofeedback training, DBT, therapy, and other things like that to reduce the effect that pain has on my life.

I don't remember ever hearing it in church, but my mom was very Catholic and my dad was very Protestant. I remember asking my dad for a pokemon game, or to watch the anime on tv (back in 2002). He said no, because my mom believed it showed witchcraft. And Yu-Gi-Oh, because it involved summoning monsters, including demons. Eventually she chilled out a bit, my dad became a deist, and they got rid of that rule by the time I was 7.

I was in 4th grade when Pokémon came out. That’s prime Pokémon time. However, I grew up in a very conservative community. All of my friends would talk about how evil Pokémon was. (We would definitely watch X-Men and TMNT and all kinds of great stuff). Now my son is 12, and he’s interested in Pokémon. Just today we were at the Pokémon trading store, and I was remembering all of the neighborhood kids being allergic to Pokémon, feeling aggrieved that I didn’t really know anything about Pokémon besides the tv shows and games my son and I played. I’d never heard of this preacher, but I’m almost certain he’s responsible for making Pokémon a bummer to talk about when I was a kid. @@greg-op2jh Probably not well I'd imagine. I am sorry. It leaves a mark on you I'm sure. One of the last things my Dad to said to me was that I was a difficult child. And he apologized for not being perfect. As if I needed him to be to raise me. If anyone is going through something similar I hope you learn this lesson faster that I did. There doesn't have to be a big event to validate your trauma. Sometimes it's a slow drip feed. It can make it hard to put your finger on, hard not to feel guilty about. But the truth is sometimes family will only ever be an anchor. Dragging you down and keeping you from growing. Stop you from being yourself. It's hard to see and even harder to break free from. You can do it though.

Oh dear 😢 Never mind Pokémon, the "Opiate of the Masses" (aka how Karl Marx described religion) should have mental health warnings like about how it destroys lives and breaks up families. When you are supposed to blindly believe in something you cannot possibly prove and are then vilified if you don't comment how beautiful the (non-existent) Emperor's New Clothes are is beyond me. By all means believe in anything you want to but don't punish other people (or treat them badly) if they don't believe in what you do. As per Arthur C Clarke's "Childhood's End", society can only progress fully when when we let go of superstitious beliefs.

I had forgotten about Phil's infamous clip from that sermon. Seeing it again made me think back to elementary school, and a friend I had. It makes me think that Phil was the reason why.

I have a plushie charmander named Mr. Mander sitting on my desk right now, absolutely adorable. This does take me back about 24 years ago now when I was told magic and pokemon cards were demonic and i had to hand them over to be disposed of. Things like this pretty solidified anger towards Christianity and people of any faith in me for decades. Took a while for me to allow for the possibility that some people aren't psychotic alt right overzealous hateful bigots. I wonder how many relationships with decent people I could have had if I wasn't so outwardly aggressive to anyone even presenting a mild association with religion. Probably a lot. Looking back I did know good accepting Christians but I just would not let them into my life. And fearmongering over a children's card/video game played a not insignificant role in that. I cannot stress this enough, support your kids, even if you think what they're into is stupid.

When I was a kid I never got a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figurine because part of the Satanic Panic in South Africa was the idea that TMNT was evil. They actually changed all the branding to switch the name to 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' because ninjas were assassins and thus inappropriate for children. They even dubbed the theme song to say "Teenage Mutant hero Turtles" with the worst dubbing you've ever heard outside of a Fox4Kids show. The 80s was wild I tell you, wild.
