Incredibly interesting book and much of the writing is brilliant... Becker was a smart guy and a great writer but a couple of his remarks are so out there that it's hard to believe they made it into the book... Animals such as Buffalo and elephants are very aware of death and certainly don't graze placidly while members of The Herd are being shot down These animals would never tolerate gun fire near them without a strong response And they often times don't even tolerate Predators which pose no danger to them such as cheetahs This is a weird comment from someone who is very smart Anyone have any thoughts of how this made it through editing? Even a basic understanding of animal behavior shows that all mammals are very sensitive to what's going on around them and have strong responses to stimuli... Another one that Becker writes is that umans have Gill marks... Of course umans don't have any physiological markings comparable to gills or leftover from evolution This is another strange remark that I again wonder how it made it through any editing?? Anyway it's a good book... Parts of it are great... I think the birth and death of meaning second edition is a little more scientifically grounded Just curious if anyone else picked up on those I guess in some sense it's like Poetic license but it's definitely factually incorrect...

Actually paused to comment right along the lines you just stated, namely about animals lacking so much self reflection that they can be killed without consequence of any action by them to survive. Hell, most herd animals will even band together outside of direct relations to save a juvenile in distress. Guess this is the part that starts showing why he was forced out of so many jobs....and makes me question how much to give his books credence at all. I certainly don't want to be part of the current movement that if it feels like it should be true, then I should be allowed to say it is.

Interesting thing about the formulation of the idea castration anxiety which is most likely generated and based off of the fact that Freud was circumcised. Anesthetics were not used if at all until the later 90s so it would be likely he had is own complex based on that and projecting his experiences onto the human condition.
