Frank Costello is loosely based off Whitey Bulger who was a more fascinating character in real life. Johnny Depp plays him in Black Mass. He was a rat but the FBI was working for him more than anything. His FBI handler is now doing 40 years for doing what Matt Damon was doing.

He was on the run for a very long time and was the 2nd person on the FBI’s most wanted list behind only Bin Laden, they caught him in Cali about 10-12 years ago and he ended up getting killed in jail maybe 5 years ago or so.. group of inmates had a padlock in a sock and a shiv and ended his life rather brutally, he was in a wheelchair at that point so he obviously wasn’t able to do much about it but the guards said he was unrecognizable by the time they were able to break it up.. he did some pretty bad stuff during his time out in southy and karma is a btch.. the bill comes due eventually and he paid 🤷🏼‍♂️

"I'm the guy who does his job; you must be the other guy." Dialogues in this movie are just pure gold. It's one of the most re-watchable 2 and 1/2 hour movies ever made. Also, this was the film where Martin Scorsese finally won the Oscar for Best Director. He had been nominated, lost five times before and got it on his sixth nomination. His previous nominations were for "Raging Bull", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Goodfellas", "Gangs of New York" and "The Aviator". He has been nominated three more times for "Hugo", "The Wolf of Wall Street", "The Irishman" and I am sure he will also be nominated for "Killers of the Flower Moon". All of them are great films.

Almost immediately, y'all reacted viscerally to one of the big aspects of this movie that the other actors talk about: That scene where Nicholson talks about how the woman "fell funny" after an execution, was actually born out of an understanding that Scorsese had with Jack. He'd actually thought about and added that in, and Scorsese liked it. The actors, DiCaprio, Damon, everyone that worked closely with him, said he was more like a writer who could act, because he'd take a simpler scene and build on it in a way that matched his character and complemented the script without actually messing with it.

Did it win any oscars? The acting and soundtrack were both obscenely good but for me the whole film felt disjointed somehow. It skips over enormous chunks of time (like a year) with a 10 second montage. I'm from 15 minutes north of Boston. Whole family's Irish-American. When this movie came out, it was a huge phenomenon. It was really cool to see people speaking with the accent I grew up with, and thought was normal. I grew up frequenting, and later working at, a pizza joint as a teenager. Everyone who worked there sounded like this, the Irish and the Italians. Since going to university and working out in central/western MA, I lost some of the accent. However, every time I go back home or talk with someone who has it, it naturally comes right back like it never left. Sometimes I feel like I've been acting this whole time and speaking the way people expect me to out here to blend in. It's always been there, though.

i highly recommend his earliest movies like the very dark/grim "Basketball Diaries" to see a real young. highschool aged Leo. Even earlier then that, he plays an impeccable role alongside Johnny Depp in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". Leo looks about 14-15 and plays a severely mentally challenged child with a personality of like an 8 year old.. it's really impressive.. (I'm not positive if it's Down Syndrome only bc he doesn't have any form of the usual physical traits associated with DS.. but he kills the role despite how highly difficult type of acting needed for any age, esp a teen). Leo was born to be an Actor.

When Captain Queenan (Martin Sheen) is plunging to his death from the building, there are X's on the windows of the building as he's falling. When Matt Damon's character finally kills Costello (Jack Nicholson), there's a big X on some building structure behind him (Matt Damon). At the end, when Matt Damon comes out of the elevator with grocery bags in his arms, there's a big X taped to the floor of the hallway.

YES!!! Its not unheard of for high ranking crime bosses to also be CI's for the feds or to collude with them. In fact, any criminal willing to give a steady supply of info on other criminals can do it and gain a certain amount of leniency or passivity from the law enforcement. A personal example is, I knew a guy that was with two friends and they were pulled over in traffic stop. The driver should have faced a dui charge and another a gun posession. But the third guy got out and went back to the police cruiser to have a conversation with the officers and they were let go. They had no idea what happened but a year later the guy died for health reasons and it came out that he was an informant. Not snitching on his friends, but snitching all the same

The original is Infernal Affairs. Not "Internal" @@muninraven3327 The Departed, as a remake, is pretty good, but the original version is a banger.

In all honesty I prefer the original , I found it to be superior to the Hollywood remake, perhaps, because having seen the original years earlier and therefore knowing the story , I found the remake lacking in the tension featured in the original. Not dissing the Hollywood version would just encourage other to seek out "Infernal Affairs" . p.s. there are also some sequels to the Hong Kong original which are worth viewing.

Quite often, movies can be overshadowed by the cast and fall short of the mark. The Departed is most definitely not one of those. Fantastic cast, fantastic director, and the finished product is one of my all-time favorites 👏👏

Been wanting you to see this since you started movie reactions. My favorite Martin Scorsese film. The Frank mob boss is based on real life Boston mobster, Whitey Bulger, who was a FBI informant and protected by dirty Feds, State, and locals cops for 19 years, while he murdered, stole, gambled and did all kinds of criminal behavior. He finally got ratted out and was charged with 19 murders. Happy New Year!

The neat thing about this film is that it was based off a Hong Kong film named internal affairs which starred Tony Leung and Andy Lau! This film more or less shares some of the same beats that internal affairs does such as with characters and plot! If you guys decide to watch a foreign film in the future this would be a good one to watch!

2 litre soda bottles work surprisingly well as silencers for a few shots. To the point that having an adapter that threads onto a soda bottle and a firearm is treated as a suppressor by the ATF and requires a tax stamp to be legal.

I was in a film club in high school and 2006 was the first year of the club. When the Oscars came around the next semester we did a big betting pool on what was going to win Best Picture. I was the only one to pick the Departed while everyone else picked either the Queen or Babel, and I absolutely relished my win.

People always talk about the Italian Mafia, but sometimes they forget about the Irish gangsters in Boston. Some of those Mic guys were every bit as brutal as the Italian brothas. That’s Vera Farmiga. She’s mostly a scream queen (Insidious series, I think). I think she is very underrated. My favorite role of hers was as Norma Bates in the Bates Motel (tv show that is a prequel to Psycho, and , incidentals stars Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates, another underrated actor). I think Vera is very beautiful as well, and happens to be the older sister of Taissa Farmiga, who is part of the Amazing American Horror Story reoccurring cast.

Costello is very loosely based on Whitey Bulger. Bulger was a Boston Irish Mafia boss and he worked insanely closely with FBI agent John Connolly. Connolly grew up in the same Irish Projects that Bulger operated in. Bulger gave Connolly information on the Italian Mafia, essentially using the FBI to take out his competition. Connolly rose quickly up the ranks of the FBI because of the information given to him by Bulger. This mutually beneficial relationship also included protection from local law enforcement provided by Connolly. In the early 90s someone made a big enough stink about it all and the FBI came for Bulger. He managed to evade arrest until the early 2010s.

@tileux are you incapable of realizing something can have multiple sources of inspiration? Damn, people who do that drive me nuts. Yes, its based off the hong kong film Internal Affairs, but they changed up the script and characters and based Costello and his situation off of Whitey Bulger and his criminal empire. It's a mix, not just one source or the other.

Glad you did this one, because the movie is incredible. I think the movie is trying to tell us the baby is Costigan's. Remember, Sullivan was having problems performing in the bedroom. That wrong address wasn't just the number..they were in Wash street but he told Billy to meet them on Washington street. That scene where Jack tells dude to not laugh, I'm pretty sure that was a character break by the actor, but Jack stayed in character and the scene came out great so they used it. One more thing, that woman from the Conjuring is also in a great movie with George Clooney and Anna Kendrick called Up In The Air. You should definitely check that out.
