In the jail cell scene, the guy standing on the left is a young GIANCARLO ESPOSITO, who was also in Spike Lee's movies. Next to Eddie Murphy seated on his left is his high school buddy, actor CLINT SMITH, who worked with Eddie on SNL, and was also with Eddie in his previous movie 48 HOURS, and also plays the 3rd barber SWEETWATER in the barbershop scenes with Eddie and Arsenio Hall in COMING TO AMERICA.

This reminds me of a story my uncle told me about his grandfather. He said that every day he would go and visit his grandfather and he would give my uncle $5 to go to the store and get a 5th of Jack Daniels and 2 packs of Winston cigarettes and he could keep the change. Over time and years passing he did the same routine every day but slowly that $5 would go from having some change left over to barely coving it to not being enough. He said even though that $5 would no longer cover the price of that 5th and 2 packs of cigarettes he would still get them for his grandfather. Another daily routine his grandfather did was make a pan of biscuits every moring and walk down to his pond in his back yard barefooted and sit on a swing all day and eat that entire pan of biscuits.

one of my all time faves. I rewatch it every year. In layman's terms, the ending scene at the exchange can be explained by the following. Winthorp and Valentine did a shortsell. They waited until price got really high and then flooded the market with shares that they didn't have (in the hopes that they would buy them back at a lower price during the same session). This caused the price to start dropping due to the increased supply. Then when the price plummeted after the crop report, they bought back all the shares that they promised when they sold except for the shares bought by the Dukes. Since the Dukes were stuck with all of those now worthless shares, they were ruined, and since Winthorp and Valentine now hold shares probably 2-3x their purchase price, they're rich. Until 2010, it was perfectly legal to trade on crop information before that information was officially announced. Congress, in 2010, passed legislation to prevent this type of trading and it is commonly known as the Eddie Murphy Rule, named such after this film.

The Dukes were played by old time movie actors Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy. They were both well known actors in the golden age of Hollywood. Ameche won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1986 for his role in “Cocoon”. One of the original Rock n Roll legends Bo Diddley appears as well.

The cop who found the PCP in Winthorp's pocket is Frank Oz - director, and voiced many Muppet characters - Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam Eagle, Cookie Monster, Bert, and Grover on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. He also performed the character of Yoda in the Star Wars series, beginning with The Empire Strikes Back. ALSO - the pawn shop owner who gave Winthorp $50 for his watch was Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame member Bo Diddley. The thing Eddie Murphy was waving around in the train compartment was a fancy African fly swatter also known as a fly wisk. People who live in tropical countries - Camaroon according to Valentine - have to swish these to keep off the flies. ALSO - the baggage handlers on the train were Franken and Davis, a team of writer/performers on Saturday Night Life - and Al Franken (with curly hair) became a US Senator from Minnesota.

A breakdown of what happens at the end: the Dukes were given a false report which stated orange harvest would be weak and the value of oranges would be really high. In reality "cold winter had not affected the orange harvest", so there was going to be a surplus of oranges and their real value low. So the Dukes wanted to secure as much oranges as they could, even if the price was still high. When the official report was announced, panic hit the whole stock market and anyone holding orange stock (like the Dukes) wanted to get rid´of them to cut the losses. Valentine and Winthorpe did not have any stocks at the beginning but they sold "futures" of orange stock which are agreements to supply certain amount at a fixed price, which was high at the moment they sold the futures. When the value of the stock went down, the duo waited until the price was literally at rock bottom and then bought all the shared they needed, from the desperate holders of those shares, to satisfy those contracts. In short, they sold high and got to buy cheap, and that difference was their big win. For the Dukes, it was to complete opposite: a total bankrupsy and one way ticket to the poor house.

An absolute classic!! Watch this every year near Christmas time. Dan, Eddie, Jamie & Denholm (butler) all play this perfectly, as do the two Dukes! Perfect comedy, and perfect revenge story!

I just really enjoy this movie. Anytime it's on, I watch it. Eddie & Dan worked so well in this movie. Even before when they were on Saturday Night Live.

They were good here. I don’t think they ever worked together on SNL though. I think Dan had left before Eddie started.

@@andrewsawyer1375 I know the original cast all left in 80. Sadly in March of 82 John Belushi died from a over dose. I believe Dan hosted SNL while Eddie was on SNL. I think Eddie only did two or three seasons of SNL. Then he left to do movies and solo concerts.

Eddie was approached for Ghostbusters but was already working on Beverly Hills Cop. That would’ve definitely cemented them as Great co stars had it worked out

You guys didn't mention anything, but the cellmate standing next to Murphy is Giancarlo Esposito (Gustav Fring from "Better Call Saul"). And the pawn shop owner is Bo Diddley. Also, one of the corrupt cops is Frank Oz, a big part of Sesame Street and Yoda in "Star Wars".

Good to see you two going back and watching what made Eddie Murphy one of the most coveted and successful actors back in the 80's. His 90's stuff was okay, obviously subjective on my part, but you can't go wrong with his 80's stuff. You'll have to eventually watch all of his 80's movies. Good reaction as always.
