Ore than hilarious it demonstrates the power in the underground social order in old school neighborhoods. No one has to tell anyone who is in charge. It's known and those it applies to know who they are and those that get a special pass or dispensation know who they are. These neighborhoods are fewer and fewer but still exist. I used to think we were better for them disappearing. Now I'm not so sure. At least then we could see the bottom rung of the power broker ladder. As oligarchy approaches we don't know who to seek audience with should we need help.

I met a local woman while flying into Boston for a business trip. She told me there were several Boston accents; not just the Hollywood lowlife one, and some people sounded like they were English. When I got to the hotel, the woman who checked me in had an accent right out of a Merchant Ivory Production. So while I'm knocking around the city, I keep listening for others, but no luck. My last day there, I mentioned all this to a guy in the lobby bar, and he tells me it's a crock, and the woman at the desk was an intern from London. Love this scene. And not being American, I know jack shit about accents, but even if Winstone's accent is bad, I still think he totally owns the character, just because he is so badass. Other example is that scene where he kills a guy before burning his house down, where he's all like "I ain't gonna hurt ya" and shoot the guy, he pulls it off really well. And his suicide? Weirdly enough, Winstone managed to be kind of badass as he was cowardly offing himself. I really like him in this role. It's just my two cents, anyway.
@kylemorgan403210 жыл бұрын
not cowardly offing. what's better, being dragged into a precinct to do life with a bullet in your chest or quickly ending the suffering? not cowardly, smart. and better. but I do agree. he plays the character really well. a good second in command. I love the look Leo gives at 1:36 Yeah, he knows he shouldn't hit French because he'll die, and he knows that the cranberry juice is a fairly pussy move in a place like that. French knows he's a hothead, and also cool-headed. The last line of insult was to see which one he really is defined by, impulsive and hot-blooded action, or collection and a sense of demeanor. The look says "I understand it's dumb to hit you, but I'm also fairly unreasonable if pushed and part of me wishes for death. How far do you want to push this?" If he'd not shown that he was trying to repress his anger, French might have thought he was worthless, and just tough when hitting a guy that doesn't see what's coming

Yep and Black Mass is gonna blow this move out of the water and Depps performance in the trailer is better than Nicholsons entire performance in the Departed. I love Nicholson but he was completely miscast and just doesn't work as a gangster or boss. Just don't feel it. Feels forced.
@MrDts19079 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't bet on that. It's hard job to make biographical movie. Plus the Departed is a Scorsese movie so I don't know if Black Mass even could compete with it. And I strictly oppose your comments on Nicholson. The character Frank Costello is not completely Bulger. He is someone different and it is an amazing character being an out-of-stereotypical mob boss with having artistic Side as a drawer, enjoying opera, talking about John Lennon, making some philosophy about life, having great sense of humor etc. And Nicholson made his audience feel his Power as a legendary character actor during the whole movie as I believe.
@el34glo599 жыл бұрын
Deniz Taylan Sağır I never said he was completely Bulger. I said her was miscast and the part came off forced abd just jot bekeibevke/believable to me. I'm a huge Scorsese fan but let's be honest, he was mailing it on at the time he made The Departed. It's pretty obvious. Some f good scenes here and there but not close to his usual work. And I'm definitely a big Nicholson fan. He's one of the best ever hands down. However he was miscast and it didn't work and he doesn't fit the part. I'm sorry but it was obvious to me. I'm not the only one who thought it. For some it's hard to see I guess it was clear as day to me. And yes if we were taking about prime Goodfellas Scorsese then I'd agree with you about black mass having a hard time against him. However we're not and we're also talking about a director that is an actors director that brings best out of his actors. Brought amazing, some of their my best and most realistic performances out of Bale, Casey Affleck, and of course Jeff Bridges. Johnny Depp has all the talent in the world when he pits his mind into it and take s it seriously. You combine the part he's playing with this director and you're gonna see something, and with all due respect, that is gonna completley blow the part Nicholson played out of the water. It's not gonna be close. And the movie itself will feel realistic, dark and I think show more than just Whitey and his ruthlessness. It will be deeper than people think. And imo it's gonna blow The Departed away. That's my opinion because personally the Departed was completely overrated to me. And I couldn't wait to see it. People were miscast. Lines were delivered off at times. Serious parts came off silly and ruined the movie such as the elevator scene. Just was missing something. Like I said forced is what immediately came to mind.

Michael Pecikonis I think what's on the table for both of us here is the different tastes that we get from the Departed. I've watched Black Mass trailers. I know Johnny Depp is a marvelous actor, with no question and I know he'll do his best for Bulger. But for me, Scorsese or Tarantino or DePalma are some guys with that 'special touch', I mean whatever they make some touch, they make you feel they are in this business, I mean if it's a movie or smth. else. Plus, the Departed gives me whatever I need about a movie: it has great soundtrack lining, acting is amazing, colors and camera angles are great, the flow is quick enough so that's all I need about a movie. And believe me, I've seen Black Mass trailer, the first and the most obvious mistake about these new Hollywood movies which Black Mass itself is already sharing, is using this 'yellowed' sepia color to make their 'dumb' or counted dumb audience sure they're shooting some 'historical' movie. Plus I also believe out of trailers that Black Mass scenes, or some scenes of Depp are highly overdone, overdone that could even shadow the realistic Bulger and the other characters. So these are all my opinion. But as someone watched Chinese version and almost whole Scorsese movies, I can honestly claim this movie as one of the bests. But as I said, you can get bored from this movie and that doesn't make you dumb or smt. else, maybe it's not your taste and that's it ...

I'm from Boston-- they did a pretty good job on the accents-- except for Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin-- way over done. Leonardo did 'Shutter Island ' and he pulled that off great too. Great Movie-- Whitey Bulger didn't like it too much though.
@el34glo599 жыл бұрын
He didn't like it because the movie was forced avd funny when it shouldn't have been. I thought Baldwin was funny as hell. Nicholson was completely miscast. And he's one of the best of all time. Just doesn't work as a gangster or mob boss. Felt forced. DiCaprio was really the only saving grace. But the whole movie was blah. Some good scenes here and there. Black mass is gonna do it right.

Mr. French was such an awesome character...Wish he got featured a bit more.

This scene was really funny. Especially, when the guy at the barstool says, "Oh." And French goes, "What? Oh fucking what?" as he punches him with both hands. LOL it's a funny conflict, where Billy can't hit the guy sitting at the bar counter, but French needs to, to teach him a lesson not to mess with Jackie's nephew. LOL all he said was, "Oh." I feel like he would've been beaten up no matter what he said.. "OK", "sorry", "understood". It's actually kind of ridiculous though, all he said was, "Oh." BTW Idk why but I found it really funny the way Billy said, "cranberry juice" at the beginning of this video. And 0:16 is so fucking badass.
