As a Romanian Marxist, I did not expect to get called out this early! 😂 Tbf linguistically Romanian is a massive hodge-podge (we even have Arab and Persian loanwords mostly imported through the years of Ottoman dominance, but some of the Persian ones go all the way back to the Iranic Scythian nomads who roamed the southern and eastern Romanian steppes 2500 years ago), but the vocabulary is about 70% of Latin origin and only about 15 to 18% of Slavic origin. Furthermore, Romanian is actually the only major romance language that kept sone Latin grammatical features, such as the existence of a neutral grammatical gender and several others, make of that what you will. (are we more roman than the Italians? Are we Eastern Scythian "hordes"? Both??? 😂) That said, culturally Romania is definitely Balkan, and comrade Hakim is 100% spot on - hell, I was personally gifted an ancestry DNA test and I'm apparently 30 to 32% Eastern Slavic (so Russian, Bielorussian or Ukrainian) and also 1% Greek, 1% North Indian 🤣 (this would get Romanian racist bigots to disown me even though I'm white af) and 3% German. Of course there has been Balkanic and Eastern Slavic admixture, as well as far more significant I would argue cultural influence from all over the Balkans and in general the Christian orthodox world. Anyway, even though neither Romania, Hungary nor Albania are linguistically slavic, they're all still definitely integral parts of the Eastern European cultural milieu, and Romania and Hungary especially are a bit of bridge between the proper Balkans and more northern Eastern Europe. We're not "special" in any way except that the proto-Romanian space got oppressed by so many empires since the dawn of time, (starting with Scythian horse nomads, then Romans, then Byzantines, eventually Hungarians, Mongols, Ottomans and several others) that they all left a genetic and linguistic "footprint" on Romania, which you'd think would make a lot of Romanians who study our history ultimate anti-imperialists, but instead we get anti-vaxxer homophobic pro-fascistic nationalists like Calin Georgescu... 🤦‍♂️ Tbf Romania doesn't have as bad of a far right problem as Poland, Ukraine or Hungary, but we don't really have a political left either, (not even a social democratic center-left, as PSD are just corrupt opportunistic centrists) so there isn't much of a grassroots opposition to Georgescu's ilk. (hopefully that idiot doesn't get elected, but unfortunately there isn't much revolutionary potential in this country)

@Vict0r1984 what are your thoughts on SENS. They say that a lot of members are actually leftists. Now obviously they cant do anything of substance since we are in EU or nato and even basic things like nationalizing certain parts of the economy are impossible, i think we need a political party that encourages people to go out and participate politically (rights for minorities, negotiation at the workplace by making syndicates mandatory in big companies etc) and kind of remove those preconceptions of marxism, socialism etc.

The tariffs makes strategic sense if you want to actually boost the local manufacturing and can source all the materials domestically as well. There might a be goal to prepare for war with near-peer countries and get the manufacturing back to the country in preparation of that or just because they realised they can't just be a services-only economy.

@NightfallGemini
@NightfallGemini Ай бұрын
except they've absolutely put the cart before the horse, in true american fashion. the tariff package just cores out the economy without the requisite industrial capacity to actually participate in something more than just shuffling numbers around, the US already divested itself of all of that and rebuilding that would take decades as well as essentially neuter the US technologically, considering every piece of high-tech equipment comes from elsewhere and requires inputs from elsewhere, especially places like China. this is why every trade war ultimately just makes things worse for the US without any real benefit. they think they can strongarm other countries while forgetting they're reliant on every country they deal with and subjugate for, well, everything.

It is decently common for Romanian nationalists to think they were a surviving bit of the Roman empire. There's no way for me to tell for sure, but it feels it also exists outside of far-right nationalist circles as a belief in Romania. I definitely know that ethno-nationalist narratives against Siebenbürger & Szekler are commonly held by every Romanian I encounter online.

Romanians are extremely racist these days Also, they don't think they are the Romans inheritors, but their antecessors. They literally think that the dacians (an ancient people nearly wiped out by the Romans, that have very little continuity with modern Romanians) were the original civilization that the Greeks and Romans sprang from. Plus an RFK- esque idiot who praises the iron guard (Romanian WW2 fascists) is leading the presidential elections. So we're pretty fucked

21:51 - yes, sure that is true, but it's about citizenship first. It's the institution that enables the concept of the citizen, which creates the appearance of all classes having equal rights through the vote or through anyone having the right to stand for election, and of the imagined concept of homogeneity through national identity, what Hadžidedić calls a multi-purpose social glue by illusion.

So, there is some misinformation here. While yes an end to us hegemony might create an opportunity for socialist movements, we should not, as socialists, be supporting any capitalist state as the power dynamics shift. Lenin was very clear on this, especially in reference to WW1 and how socialists abandoned the international labor movement to instead support one bourgeois state over another. We must not play lesser evilism with bourgeois states as while they may temporarily support workers movements in a rivalling nation, they will only do so as a means to weaken said rival, and will, in turn, target any successful revolutionary movement. A multipolar world merely means a change in the dominant capitalist states, not a socialist world.
@IsaacSperrow
@IsaacSperrow Ай бұрын
To me its more like everybody are just being optimistic that by the time that becomes its own big problem, then another solution would appear by then. Its like everybody have a feeling that Taiwan is getting invaded someday by China, and it probably will, but you know, by the time we get there, hopefully things won't be as bad as we think it will be.
@romanmeneghinister1584
@romanmeneghinister1584 Ай бұрын
@tankiegirl I'm not saying that anyone in this episode is, but I am cautioning against the positivity present with the reminder that brics are, in one form or another, capitalist states, and that we can commend individual policies or actions of these states, but must not get carried away and support them as they are, ie capitalist states. I think it is a pretty common trap people can fall into. What comes after the establishment of a multipolar world? If we look back, the closest analogue would be a pre WW1 world, with a handful of rivalling imperialist, in the ml sense, nations vying for control of the world resources. The tactics and strategies used varied between nations and between periods of time with varying degrees of violence and cruelty, however, as marxists, we oppose all exploitation.
@romanmeneghinister1584
@romanmeneghinister1584 Ай бұрын
@tankiegirl I agree that the US is currently the largest threat to working people of the world, but to assume that brics as a replacement for the US will be better indefinitely is unlikely. In all these countries, we have seen massive exploitation and suppression of the working class similar in many ways to the US. I am not sure what dominant countries in brics are not capitalist. If you are referring to China, they are by definition not socialist. The reliance on a market economy and existence of bourgeoisie, including influence in the party, in China is proof enough. If they underwent another revolution, they could become socialist, but at present, they are a regulated capitalist state. While I hope they can overcome the dengist reforms, I fear full capitalist restoration is inevitable on its current trajectory
@romanmeneghinister1584
@romanmeneghinister1584 Ай бұрын
@tankiegirl sure, but so long as capitalism remains at all, the violence employed by the west will always exist as a tool to be used against working people and as socialists, we want to do a way with the exploitation entirely, not choose which is a worse or better condition to live under. There is nothing stopping brics from using the tactics employed by the west in the future. The working people have no nation, so we should embrace the limited improvements possible under capitalism, but always organize to do away with it entirely. I make no defense for imperialism, and am merely cautioning against open endorsement of rising imperialist powers, in the ml sense, as anything more than a change in the status quo that we must take advantage of and organize within before a new status quo where other imperialist states have taken over as leading hegemonies.
@romanmeneghinister1584
@romanmeneghinister1584 Ай бұрын
@tankiegirl China is not a socialist state. It relies on a market economy and while it can regulate capitalism, it is still subject to the contradictions built into capitalism. Unless the state is willing to undue, via violence, the dengist reforms, the bourgeoisie will always be a threat and have zero reason not to resort to violence. American foreign policy lines up with corporate interests. The people of the US believe, as a whole that they are the good guys because it's a constant propaganda machine. The tactics used to manufacture consent from the US population can be used on any people, as we are all the same species. We know the bourgeoisie and the proletariat have irreconcilable differences and as a result, there is zero reason to expect the bourgeoisie of any state for a prolonged period of time not to suppress workers of their own nation, or others. It would be idealistic to believe any ethnicity is somehow immune to class interests. As such, I am simply saying we cannot sit on our laurels, blindly cheer, and abandon organizing the labor movement. We have no reason to believe that brics nations couldn't resort to violent repression given time, opportunity, and reason to, and every reason to continue to work and organize in anticipation of it, better to be prepared and proven wrong, then unprepared and regret it. If China undid the dengist reforms and embraced socialism, I will proudly stand by them as a socialist, but until such a time, I cannot do that. I was deeply touched by a speech the Chinese representative gave regarding 1sre@l and the atrocities being committed by them and the complicity of the United states. So imagine my dismay as, when last I checked, China was still trading with 1sre@l and is a massive trading partner for non-military goods. Is China complicit in the way the US is? No, not even close. But it seems like the Chinese state is more interested in political theater than the emancipation of the oppressed people of p@lest1ne. Forgive my changes to names, I do not know what yt will censor. Why is it the trade continues? Because capital demands it, and if genocide isn't a deal breaker for doing business, then I am not reassured. If China has halted trade since I last checked, I will concede that moral victory, followed up by asking what took so long?

On tariffs you show a lot of self contradictions. Ok, the point of a tariff is to encourage import substitution, ie localized production of said goods. You mentioned encouraging local industrialization is the clever thing southern hemisphere countries are trying to do, but now you contradict yourself with the USA. In fact high protectionist tariffs, government initiative for local production ect is how China industrialized and the entire western world industrialized... Then to call the policy of local industrial incentive stupid (even though you had previously praised it for non us countries) you rely on arguments that support the idea of unequal exchange and an international race to the bottom.... You're so anti American you lose all objectivity, I understand why but still.....

This is how I understood it. Usually tariffs protect certain infant industries in a country by increasing the price of imports. For most countries, this is good for industries like agriculture and clothing production. Tariffs tend to only be put on certain industries to avoid the following problem: Tariffs hurt industries that need to import significant raw materials from other countries. China is the largest exporter of raw materials in the world. The US does not produce/does not have significant budding industries in the extraction or cultivation of gold, coffee, rubber, lithium, manganese, niobium, strontium, tantalum, or tin, just to name a few raw materials. Thus the American industries that still need to import raw materials will incur additional costs and will transfer those costs to the consumer, resulting in what is effectively a flat tax. This is my elementary understanding of it, at least.

@nicelittlestyleslad you're right the average us consumer will effectively pay the tax on goods that say... lithium. Meaning batteries are more expensive. The usa has large lithium reserves but no budding industry because the price of imports is low enough to make it not worthwhile to invest in local production. This is where the usa is very fortunate. When the price of oil rose above a threshold this made exploration of alternatives that the usa has to be worthwhile and as those investments bore fruit (shale exploration) the price of oil went down. This isn't something that many countries could just do. They don't have the mineral wealth just sitting there nor do they have the technology to explore it. The reason why European powers were obsessed with empire in the 19th century tbh was to ensure access to these raw materials that they either were short of or lacked altogether. This wasn't about price, it was competing empires would hold trade off as leverage. States that had a resource within its own borders would demand political concessions not just financial. The usa is the 2nd least trade dependant state on the planet thanks to having possibly the best geography of any state on the planet. It's most important trade partner isn't China, its Mexico. It's important to understand this when studying the usa in the 20th century. The bretton woods system of international "free trade" wasn't designed to enrich the usa, it was designed to revive and enrich Europe in order to bribe them to be allies against the soviet union. The reason why the us international led order is falling apart is the very reason why it was built ceased to exist 30 years ago.
