As a person currently living in a tent in America, it's not enough that I'm dealing with surviving in the elements on the Oregon coast in winter, but I also have to worry about people stumbling on me and attacking me. I'm camping in the national forest, which is legal to camp anywhere in (with some stipulations). It's very isolated but I've had 4 people come across me Last week, some couple was exploring at 5am for some reason, and found my stuff and started rummaging through it. It was my food, which I keep away from my tent to avoid bear encounters They followed the path to my tent and the dude was like "oh I live for shit like this". I thought I was about to be attacked by random reactionaries, or that it was the police and they were coming to remove me or falsely accuse me of something There's nobody here to witness, after all But they apparently were just checking on me. Which I guess I appreciate but like it's 5am lmao. But the fear I felt in that moment, knowing I had absolutely no power, and that if my camp were destroyed I'd be fucked... I couldn't sleep after that Every time I leave, I pray that all my stuff will still be there when I get back. I have to constantly fight to keep everything dry, but almost everything is damp. I'll be getting out of here soon though (I hope)

Update: The president of Cuba just visited us to discuss further economic cooperation and technology transfer. My uncle who is the director of the Institute for food crops of Hai Duong, a province next to Hanoi, told me he's currently in charge of training like 14 Cuban technicians to get them familiar with the breeds we gave then, to provide maintenance and improve upon by themselves. And the Vietnamese government paid for all of that. My professor in the plant genetic class also had to relocated some of our class sessions because she had to meet some Cuban guests to introduce them to our facility.

excellent video. I really enjoyed listening to Luna. I'm looking forward to her book because an easy to read version of Marx would be wonderful I picked up a free copy of Capitol and dang... that is wordy. I swear 19th century writers are too long winded. With that said, I can't wait for the concise version. Thank you in advance. It's nice to hear from a Vietnamese person about what it's like to live there. I'm the child of a Viet Nam veteran. Thankfully my father was support personnel stationed in Germany and never saw battle but he was still drafted into that mess. I have a lot of perspective on what it's' like for those who came back to the US so I find it very interesting to hear from people in Viet Nam about their side of the conflict because you know we only ever hear from the American perspective. You talked about how Americans go to Viet Nam to get health care. It's really sad that with the USA being so proud of the military , they can't even provide good health care to the people who fought for the country. I've seen lots of videos promoting how rich Americans should move to Viet Nam and retire because they can live on so little. That really irks me because they can have the money and mobility to move to another country that's socialist, benefit from it, avoid US taxes and leave the rest of here to deal with the US. It's another sad situation

American Dairy farmer here, or at least the son of one. While the market and attempting to raise milk prices was a large part of the drive for farmers to dump milk, another part, or at least what I was told was another part, was bottlenecks within milk processing systems. The story about the military assistance in Ho Chi Minh City, and the western immigrants being freaked out, the US literally does the same thing. Although it's usually much less helpful (but those sort of people don't tend to see it that way). During disasters, the national guard gets deployed to "help" the victims of natural disasters. But that's usually just making sure the OUT OF CONTROL POORS don't USE THIS AS AN EXCUSE TO LOOT AND STEEAAAALLL and start the PUUURRRGEEE. The strategy seems to be "control the wild population first, help second"

Brilliant episode, as always. Regarding the point JT made towards the end abou the display of authority found in the voice of a flat American accent, I’ve been thinking about this for a while and i think the origin of this comes from the notion that anything that comes from the imperial core is the “default” or “neutral” one and anything else, usually from peripheries, are a tainted or altered versions, not necessarily in a negative light tho sometimes definitely in that sense. For example, the term “classical” in classical music. If there wasn’t the inherit racism in the term, this would have referred to the period, but obviously 15th century arabic music isn’t considered classical. This can also be seen throughout the simplifications of cultures as basic aesthetics (Saeed says hi). Donno if anyone will read this but i had to get it out ❤

I like Luna Oi and I don't want to be pedantic, but her description of pre-Chinese Vietnam sounds much more like Marx's description of primitive communism during the stages of development of private property. "The second form is the ancient communal and State ownership which proceeds especially from the union of several tribes into a 'city' by agreement or by conquest" from The German Ideology I think the syndicalist ideology or model actually arose from associations of trade unions under the material conditions of industrial capitalism in the late-modern period

So consider if A owns a home in city X and B owns a home in city Y but A lives in city Y and rents from B and B lives in city X and rents from A, then between the two of them, the home-ownership rate is 0% Home-ownership rates would also be a red herring if the homelessness rate is very high Of course, old and retired people for example will always live in the house they own, if they have one

i loved vietnam when i visited there. unfortunately, a lot of viet americans are adverse to traveling there because of anti-communist propaganda they were raised with, which they share with me through sad immigration stories. but also they get shamed for losing their culture and leaving to live with imperialists, which is true, but also not really their fault. i live around a lot of hmong people and the memories of historical persecution plus the CIA propaganda from vang pao is very much alive around here. i feel like its a barrier to more asian americans becoming socialists, which sucks because thats like all my friends lol although i would say a good amount of asian americans despise the imperialist notions and hypocritical racism of the u.s. Kinda late to comment to this podcast. What Luna described in the video of Vietnam is accurate, however there are some negatives (as well as some positives) in the background that she did not mention, but otherwise be very important for us to understand the grey line of why the status of Vietnam is socialist or more of "state capitalists" as argued by some scholars. - Curfew and military assistance in COVID's quarantine: + Yes, the image of the military helping the people in times of crisis is very beautiful, and the majority of people I know appreciate this. However, despite people not hating on the military personnel, they hate on the way the curfew is managed, particularly for big urban cities. Why? Because people have no access to food/medicine due to curfew and deliveries from the state can't barely satisfy the demands. Lots of family in HCMC, particularly those far from main streets, are in lack of supply, and they must sneak out illegally to buy food/supply. It was only later on in the outbreak (~2 months) did the local governments learned that their people are actually starving to start allowing grassroots solutions and people's delivery force to meet the demands. - Military in community service in general: + I followed JT and noticed he made a vid criticized free labor for community service in the central park. Well, military conscription in Vietnam is basically that... Even worse, it is heavily aimed towards the poor due to corruption in drafting prioritizing those with the finance to "afford" not getting drafted. You know how stories of South Korean celebrities being on hiatus due to military conscription? Well, I hardly know any young male Vietnamese celebrity that went to military conscription, or at all. And I have served 2 years as a conscript, and of the thousand of conscript comrades I have served with, barely

Okay, so first of all: usually I do enjoy most of your podcasts, but you are just going overboard with the ID-Pol, especially in this one. Also Vietnam's economic sellout program is peak revisionism and you highlighting it like it's no problem is problematic. When you're done with all your anti-american rhetoric, it would've been nice to mention that Vietnam is one of the partners of the US in their drive to combat the rise of China.

How are they going overboard with identify politics?

Well China shaked hand with the US first. What choice did we have after the Soviet Union collapsed and China became US partner? To end up like North Korea?
