Talking about the reserve army of labor just made me kinda realize that I personally have been replaced by a homeless person before at work. A small restaurant I was working at hired a homeless guy, paid him half as much as me, had him move in with another co-worker, and then fired me 2 weeks later after he was all trained up. Dude was so grateful to have a job and be off the streets and worked super hard and so willing to kiss the hand who fed him. It's so exploitative yet there's no way you can really even denounce or combat it because at the end of the day it's an objectively good thing that this poor man was able to get off the streets.
@CraigKeidel
@CraigKeidel Жыл бұрын
Counterpoint: the system punished you with the threat of homelessness (joblessness) because you dared require a higher wage. Replacing workers with cheaper workers is a way to beat the working class into submission.
@CraigKeidel
@CraigKeidel Жыл бұрын
So it was not objectively good, as paid wages to the working class saw a net decrease while the employment pool was net unchanged, a job for a job with less cost to the capitalist. Be mad, just be mad at the business owner not the homeless guy.

As you can tell I like listening to the podcast as it always makes me think! Hakim's point about "infinite growth on a finite planet" really got me to think... He's arguing for entropy. The opposite of progress. Not a falling back and collapse, no just a halt to growth (anti progress) and staying at an ideal place forever because the planet is finite. It really fits into this theory I have that the difference between monarchist reactionaries and Marxists is the reactionaries ideal entropic state was in the past, and the Marxists believe apparently the idealized entropic eternal system has yet to come! They want the same thing, just different ideas of where that thing is.

The planned obsolescence thing is so important. I would almost argue that the system of consumerism is built on theft. Capitalists will try to sell you shitty products that break in a month or a year, with the sole purpose that you keep buying them. There are of course exceptions (like video game consoles, my Wii from 2007 still works), but deep down the only people who benefit from consumerism are the capitalist class. And I haven’t even mentioned the alienating aspects of the shallow, toxic culture built around consumerism. Like in 7th and 8th grade when I was into cartoons and video games from the 1990s and 2000s (and increasingly interested in classical music), my fellow classmates were talking about x newest brand of shoes, like Nikes and Jordans, and it fucking alienated me.

Degrowth isn't individualist at all btw, quite a few marxist degrowthers - of course there are some numpties in there who think its compatible with capitalism (Herman Daly etc) but theyre a minority - most realise degrowth must involve overcoming capitalism, to consume less is to crash it, so it cant be done inside the system. But glad you guys are talking about it. And really enjoying these, dunno why i put them off so long :)

Food for thought: if I comment on this video to support it because the algorithm supposedly favors videos with more comments, would it mean indirectly subscribing to the idea of a "free markeet", of which the algorithm is supposed to be a microcosm, fostering "fair" competition for the limited ampount of views and all, whilst ignoring that the actual, ultimate moving force is not the algorithm-based competition but, rather, the wishes of the people who have ordered it to be crafted?..

The reason why we have so many brands of the same product is because there are not enough ways to make a living under capitalism. There are not enough good paying jobs to go around under capitalism. It’s very costly to come up with a truly unique product and get it commercially produced profitably. People rack their brains trying to figure out how to survive. The same thing goes for services. It’s a dog eat dog world and people need to do whatever they can to differentiate themselves to survive. Even if that differentiation is small or not what it’s promised to be. This can lead to things like roadside snake oil salesmen. Even workers seek to differentiate themselves from others who can essentially do the same things.

Perpetual employment is a positive? Nooooooooooooooo. No. It's a mistake. I mean I hate being unemployed because I'm forced to need money to live but maybe there's good reasons not to have everyone work all the time either. Maybe survival shouldn't be tied to labor. Consider: the elderly, the very young, the disabled.
