I love shade-tree mechanic stuff like this. But this is only a problem if you want (or are stuck with) the Type 3 mountain derailleur. For anybody that is okay with a 42T large cog (those of us that know double chainrings are better...go on, change my mind), the Type 2.1 10s rear MTB derailleurs are perfect with a longer B-screw, and will work with either 10s or 11s road shifters. I've got 10s Red shifters on a Type 2.1 X0 rear derailleur on my Gorilla Monsoon, and it works great. Admittedly, this is great for somebody looking to upgrade a bike that came stock with an Apex1 or Force1 from the factory to be able to use large ratio cassettes with road shifters. In conclusion, this gives people options, and options are awesome, so this is awesome. Carry on.

I talked with you about getting a SX just for the swap, but I found out it will not work properly, the cage lock are in different positions, it can be done by drilling but I don't think it is worth the mess, a NX is just a few bucks more. Don't bother with NX or SX, period. Save up for GX or better. Or better yet, get a Shimano equipped bike in the first place. The return springs on the cheap Sram models tends to be really weak because they're simply cheap and compromised. We can rarely get them to shift well in both directions, even when theyre brand new off the showroom floor.

For the Shimano guys and gals out here, I have heard rumors that the Ultegra RX 800/805 derailleur and the XT M8000 (possibly M9000) long cage derailleur are able to be cage-swapped around too. I plan to attempt it and will probably record it for the internet, success or fail. I find 11-40 to be a fine cassette size, but I'd like to be able to use a larger chainring difference without running afoul of capacity limits, which I believe this swap will net me 45T of capacity vs 39T I currently have.

This derailleur still work at 100% even with all the harsh winter i gave it at Montreal haha Oh and, this is really painful to reassemble the springs you didn't had to deal with. I found a way around using a road bike derailleur on a mtb frame years ago by buying a Problem Solvers Cross Clamp with Cable Pulley 34.9mm Black component. Basically it's a frame clamp with a 1" diameter pulley which is placed below the front derailleur because mtb cable guides are setup where the cable would attach to the top of the mtb derailleur but a road derailleur cables attach from the bottom. This is very handy if you want a road derailleur that weighs 240g instead of a mtb derailleur that might weigh 360g. The same can be said for changing a mtb from using a mtb rear derailleur to use a road rear derailleur where you might shave off another 250g. I used to race competitively many years ago & although I'm too old now to keep doing that I'm also unable to ride a normal road frame because of a back injury. If you are using a carbon fibre mtb frame with 700c wheels for riding if you have a damaged back like I have then a mtb frame can give you the right triangular shape with arms & back so as not to cause further back trauma while still being able to continue riding even though the days of competition racing are long gone. I was able to create a hybrid type of bike from combining a mtb frame, mtb crankset with 700 x 23c wheels/tyres relatively lightweight & fast enough for my broken body to easily ride around on. A typical store bought lightweight mtb could not be configured in the right angles needed to be comfortable for my back as well as they do not come with road wheels or other road components.

Just a note of caution. The angle of the parallelogram on road derailleurs is more horizontal, so the top pulley may not clear the big sprocket no matter how much you wind in the B screw. With the 1x specific clutch road derailleurs, it's less of an issue, but the old non-clutch derailleurs definitely won't give you more range with this hack.

So maybe this is a stupid question, but why does shifter and derailleur compatibility matter at all? If all of the indexing happens at the shifter end, then as long as you have the correct spacing between the cogs and a long enough derailleur cage, shouldn't any derailleur just do whatever the shifter tells it to do? I understand that the cable pull differs between shifters, but again, the derailleur itself has no indexing. The answer probably has something to do with parallelograms, but I'm still confused...
@PathLessPedaledTV4 жыл бұрын
The answer is cable pull. It use to be that the derailleur reacted to the same ratio of cable pull as the shifter. But that has been decoupled since 10spd. Some derailleur move more or less given the same amount of cable pull from the shifter n

Take for example a SHIMANO STI race bicycle 9-speed combo shifter/brake lever and a SHIMANO Shadow rear derailleur - and it shifts 11-36 teeth easily. Take additionally a "Goat-Link" and shifts 42, 46 or even 50 teeth. SHIMANO is way better than SRAM, they offer many shifters and derailleurs for reasonable prices. SRAM offers Grip-Shift up to 9-speed for good prices, but where are the cheap derailleurs, triggers, MTB, race bicycle parts? SRAM is extremely expensive. Shifters and derailleurs can only shift, a crank can only crank. It's your choice to buy overpriced parts.

I love bikes but "bad ideas" is an electric shifter on a bicycle. I don't road bike much besides a single speed track bike but I can't image having to shift allot compared to mountain biking. In my Enduro a 1x11 is enough great and a push+push shifter is very quick and easy. Can someone explain the benefits of an electric shifter? Seems like a massive waste of money. However I said that about dropper posts and are Crow on that.

haven't seen it yet but wondering if anyone's mentioned the wolf tooth road link for wider range casettes. All it does is drop the casette down from the hanger. just curious - some limitations to its use but maybe too obvious.
@PathLessPedaledTV4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. We did like three videos using the road link. This works better.

Will this Eagle NX cage work on a regular 10spd GX, which as you know works with road shifters also?

No.

are there any short cage options out there for SRAM GX derailleurs? 🤔
@tanglewoodtree4 жыл бұрын
Do you think this would work with an Apex 1 or is the cage too different? Thanks!
@PathLessPedaledTV4 жыл бұрын
Literally trying it right now. Works but you lose cage lock.
@JeffWagen4 жыл бұрын
From what I saw yes, I was about to get an SX Rd to use the cage, but it will not work properly because the cage lock is in a different position on a SX, but with the NX you can do it, the Apex will accept it just like the rival.

Hi Russ, I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share the details of your Crust Bombora build. I'm looking to craft a very similar build and thought "Why reinvent the wheel? Russ has already built this!" Thanks!

I have Shiftmate #9 from jtek to make my sram 11spd long cage mountain derailleur talk to my rival brifters. works flawlessly. 48/32 up front 11/42 in the rear on a straggler. cheaper than having to get 2 ders and swap parts, simple enough install. peter white stocks them.
@chrissmith27294 жыл бұрын
You must be doing some serious climbing with that setup, I'm running the same jtek, same chainrings and an 11/36. Tried 1x 40f 42r but it wasn't enough and I didn't care for the big jumps between gears. Then I foolishly thought that the 2x10 gx RD would talk to the rival brifters but it didn't work. Glad im not the only one running a hacked 2x out there

Aware of the shift mate. Couldn’t find anyone in the US with the 9 in stock.

@@chrissmith2729 i run it somewhat loaded and I'm certainly not the fittest person out there so its nice to have the options to go lower. with my tires the low end is about a 21.6 gear inches. when im dropping down most of the time its generally to the 32/36 combo, but having the megarange bailout happens.

I love your reviews and content, Russ! Keep up the great work! Just a few quick questions: so what is the size of the Garbaruk cassette you are using with this hack (10-46, 10-48, or 10-50) and what is the size of the chainring? just curious to know the range you are getting.

11-50 cassette. 42 front ring. 23 to 102 gear inches.

What about buying an Apex? I got one that's 11 speed. It works with Red 10 speed levers and shifts up to 50t. I don't see this compatibility issues...

I have an apex 1. It technically shifts to 50 but looks like its going to explode any second.
