Intro - Surah Ale Imran, Verse 185:
لُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۖ فَمَنْ زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ ۗ وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
Translation:
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the delusion of enjoyment.

Chapter: Purgatory in Islam on the Day of Resurrection. The opinion of the scholars that apply purgatory in Islam during the 50,000 years of the Day of Resurrection are correct, just after the people start crossing the bridge As-siraat (الصراط). All sinful people will fall temporarily in hell; and all of pious or purified people will enter in the temporary Gardens of bliss. And, 'after' this Day, the sinful people will live eternally in the slums or outskirts (في أفواه الجنة) of Paradise, by the Mercy of Allaah; and, the pious or purified people will either enter the Eternal Gardens of total bliss, or enter the Eternal Grand Paradises (جنة الفردوس), by the Mercy of Allaah. Allaah Declares: (ٱلَّذِینَ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ دِینَهُمۡ لَهۡوࣰا وَلَعِبࣰا وَغَرَّتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَیَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡیَاۚ فَٱلۡیَوۡمَ نَنسَىٰهُمۡ كَمَا نَسُوا۟ لِقَاۤءَ یَوۡمِهِمۡ هَـٰذَا وَمَا كَانُوا۟ بِـَٔایَـٰتِنَا یَجۡحَدُونَ) [Surah Al-A'raaf 51] "Who took their religion as distraction and amusement and whom the worldly life deluded." So 'today' We will forget them just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs and for having rejected Our verses." The key word in this verse is 'today', which is identified as the Day of Resurrection. Therefore, it provides the proof that the people of A'raaf are those described as above: indicating temporary abodes for people of sin, and temporary abodes for the pious or purified people, before the Permanent Reality, which will happen 'after' the 50,000 years of the Day of Resurrection. To proceed. Sub-Chapter: The people of A'raaf (أصحاب الأعراف): the entering of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the Garden of Bliss during the Day of Resurrection (which is 50,000 years in duration), 'before' he will enter the Eternal Paradise (جنة الفردوس). He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) will enter the Eternal Paradise (جنة الفردوس) 'after' the Day of Resurrection. Anas b. Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I will come to the gate of the Garden of Bliss, on the Day of Resurrection. and would seek its opening. and the keeper would say: Who art thou? I would say: Muhammad. He would then say: It is for thee that I have been ordered, and not to open it for anyone before thee. وَحَدَّثَنِي عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ آتِي بَابَ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ فَأَسْتَفْتِحُ فَيَقُولُ الْخَازِنُ مَنْ أَنْتَ فَأَقُولُ مُحَمَّدٌ ‏.‏ فَيَقُولُ بِكَ أُمِرْتُ لاَ أَفْتَحُ لأَحَدٍ قَبْلَكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ Reference : Sahih Muslim 197 اللهم ادخلنى في الجنة علي يوم القيامة بعد الدخول سيدى محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم في الجنة - يا حي يا قيوم برحمتك أستغيث - بسم الله في أوّله وآخره -

I am curious if the araf (forgive me for bad spellings) is located over jahannam & it will be for the muslim sinners & they won't experience the real jahannam like actually going into the hellfire then I like to know what will they eat, drink & wear will they be allowed to moved freely not chained up?? the people of araf are getting a temporary punishment (I don't what is that entirely) not severe like the people of jahannam because of their sins & not doing enough good deeds to enter jannah correct?? Just want to clarify this more

I’m a little confused. If the people of the Araf are the Muslims who had faith in Allah but still committed major sins in the dunya, then who are the Muslims who will be on the outskirts of jahanam? Is Araf on the outskirts of jahanam? Jazak Allah.

As Salam aleikum, yes, according to the interpretation of the Sheikh, Araaf will be over Jahannam and some sinful Muslims will be touched by its smoke and its heat... and those will be the people who fell down from siratul mustaqeem. And Allah knows best

Between jannah and jahannam there is a barrier, and upon the ‘elevated places/ mountains/hilltops’ (a’raf) there are people who shall recognise both sides of people, They call too ahlil jannah and desired to enter it, and when they turn to the people of jahannam they pray not to be in it. The people of a’raf will call out to specific people they recognize and ask them questions. These verses in this surah are the only verses apparently referring to the people of ar raf Some opinions are that the ar’raf are on top of the wall between hell and paradise Others say ar’raf is above the sirat Others say its is a hill between heaven and hell and sinful people are stopped there for a while Who are the people of ar raf? Dominant opinion is that these people are sinful muslims: Early opinion is they have equal good and bad deeds, another opinion is these people went for jihad but they also disobeyed their parents, another opinion is people who committed major sins and were muslim but didn’t do tawbah, another opinion is they had several minor sins and didn’t have enough good deeds to compensate the minor sins, Another opinion is people who took debt but died without paying the debts off, another opinion is people who did good deeds but to show off Second category of opinion is these people are innocent but grey area. Not sinful but not righteous. An example may be people of fathrah who lived before the prophet SAW and didn’t get the message but they are following the previous nations. Others have mentioned that children of pagans, (but other opinions is that children go to jannah anyway). Third category regards ahlil ar raf as not taking place after heaven and hell but taking place on the day of judgement, after people have entered heaven and hell, there is a third group left on the DOJ. It takes place right at the end before the gates are closed. Some have said ar raf may include the prophets, the shaheed, the righteous. V 49 - “Are these ˹humble believers˺ the ones you swore would never be shown Allah’s mercy?” ˹Finally, those on the heights will be told:˺ “Enter Paradise! There will be no fear for you, nor will you grieve.”” Who is narrating V49? According the third category, it could be righteous believers saying it. Allah knows best. However according to the first category, this group cannot be prophets as it is not befitting for prophets. This people are not certain that they will enter jannah but they are eager to enter jannah. They make dua to Allah. The conversation of people of ar raf to the people pf hell suggest the ar raf people at least did some good (eg give charity). V49 suggests that people of ar raf were sinful (but had emaan) and some groups of people in the dunya swore that no way these people would be forgiven, but allah in the end forgives the people of ar raf. An opinion (allah knows best) is no one who has emaan shall be punished in the full jahannam punishment and the sinful muslims that are touched by the fire may not have the same punishment as those that enter through he gates of jahannam. Whoever testifies to la ilaha ilallah was muhammadurasulullah (SAW) sincerely in his heart, jahannam is haram for him. Allah has made haram any place that does sajdah. This shows us that muslim people who are punished for sinful deeds are not in the depth of Jahannam. A group of sinful muslims will remain and be burnt to crisp, until they are taken out and go through the river of life.. Major sins require tawbah and are not forgiven unless with tawbah or if allah wills.
