I don't know where I heard it but I once heard someone say "so what" to quite a few nihilistic theories about life, even if it's all a simulation, in vain etc. So what? It's the only life I'm aware of, I need to live it. And I'd much rather learn too late that my efforts (to survive, to help others etc.) were in vain than to find out too late nihilism was wrong and I didn't even try. That thought has really helped to combat a lot of despair when we talk about philosophy and theoretical thought.

Issac Arthur (futurism, space, Sci fi youtuber) said that about the Simulation Theory. It legit doesn't matter if it's actually a Simulation if it feels real to you and there's no way out anyway. How would you even know the difference?

I agree! I wouldn’t class myself a nihilist, but I don’t think there is a meaning to life. That doesn’t have to be a depressing thought though, it just means you can decide your own meaning, without feeling like you failed :) 🖤

My favorite pessimistic quote is: “Only the optimist commits s**c*de. The optimist who can no longer be optomistic. The others, having no reason to live, why should they have one to die?” - The Trouble With Being Born book Anyway, to any pessimist reading this, I encourage you to find and give your life meaning simply because you’re living it. Even if you didn’t ask to be, you are here, so you might as well make it worthwhile. And there really is always something to love in life if you’re purposeful in your search for it. Great video!

sometimes i just wish i could take the whole fig tree. taste all the figs so i can be sure which one i want to keep; but of course, nobody can. i think having one shot and one shot only at life is a double edged sword. it gives life meaning if we are finite, but in this finite time, it can be so easily wasted, and the finite time that is provided is not near long enough to understand our place. just existing for this frame of time, trying our best to grasp what we can.

Honestly I don't know why anyone takes Roko's Basalisk seriously. It's basically just a dumber, sci-fi flavored version of Pascal's Wager, and it doesn't make any sense if you stop to think about it for more than five seconds. First of all, why would this hypothetical super-intelligent AI be concerned that anyone didn't help bring it into existence? If it can think that, then it already exists, so what does it have to worry about? Second, why would it _care_ if someone didn't help bring it into existence, much less be wrathful about it? If a person was actively trying to destroy this AI, that'd be one thing, but it's ludicrous for this AI to expect every single person in the world to help create it. I mean, would YOU want to torture someone because they didn't convince your parents to conceive you? Third, why would this supposedly super-intelligent entity decide that punishment via eternal torture would be the best method to convince people to aid in its creation? Not only would that be a colossal waste of resources, wouldn't rewarding people be more incentivizing than punishing them? Catch more flies with honey than vinegar, as they say. And finally... what the hell would be the purpose of this AI aside from insuring its own existence? Honestly this is something I've seen in a few online creepypastas and other similar stories involving sentient AI programs, presenting them as basically robotic genies or trickster gods with magical do-anything powers, and it honestly really annoys me because it simultaneously overstates and underplays the capabilities of artificial intelligence (sort of like how the word "cryptid" is slapped onto every other monster these days, even the supernatural ones). It seems like a lot of them are inspired largely by AM from _I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream_, but they fail to consider why AM was so psychotically evil in the first place. I'll admit my knowledge of how AI actually works is rudimentary at best, but knowing it doesn't work like this makes it hard for me to take these "evil AI" stories seriously.

18:00 To summarise where Laurence Labadie was coming from: He was of the belief that the revolution to abolish the state was a fool’s errand and that anarchy could only be achieved through fundamental changes in the behaviour and belief systems of individuals which would in turn lead them to transform their society and dismantle oppressive power relations directly, but he was also a misanthrope convinced that most people were too unreflective and set in their ways for this to occur, meaning that humanity was essentially doomed to tyranny and stagnation, with the only hope for the self-aware independent person to disassociate themself from society insofar as humanly possible.

The issue with the Fermi Paradox is that we've barely looked. So these amazing telescopes such as the Hubble and now the James Webb, each researcher must rent time on the scope for research. It's not like we can point the scope at points of interests any time we'd like, so we can easily miss cyclical indicators that something interesting may be occurring (for example a Dyson swarm or other megastructure occluding part of a star, we'd have to just so happen to be looking at that star and taking in data at the time the structure passes between our line of sight.) Not to mention the Hubble could barely see what we needed to, radio telescopes have the flaw that aliens may not necessarily use radio waves, and even if they do, in order for us to actually pick it up as coherent signals rather than background noise, it has to be incredibly powerful and also likely pointed right at us in the form of a radio beacon aimed directly at us.

52:59 the brutality of nature disproves any claim or notion of a good and loving god. In the unlikely scenario there even is a god, it most certainly does not care about any of the life it has created, not our actions, our plights nor our prayers; it is either as callous and indifferent as the universe it has made us all live in or it actively revels in the suffering of lifeforms like a perverted sadist.
@spiralysts4 күн бұрын
i agree. i think the only reason why people paint their gods as good and loving is to have more people believe in their gods. every god that has ever been created has only ever been a concept that is inescapably human. the christian god is supposed to be ever-present, ever-seeing, ever-knowing, yet he acts like a man, because he was written by men. it’s all very human and limited to what we know as humans. a true god is something i believe we cannot conceptualize in our human forms and brains. that or maybe if a singular god was real, it communicated with us in ways we could understand as humans but it’s true form is something incomprehensible to us. the closest thing to a god i would ever believe in is the universe itself being it’s own creator, us being the product of the universe attempting to understand itself.

48:50 if we limit the term Darwinists to only mean people who actually understand evolution theory properly, then no, most Darwinists do *not* "believe that evolution will only result in more complex and sophisticated oragmisms" at all. Evolution goes both ways, barnacles being just one example of many where creatures simplify over time. Anyone who understands evolution properly knows this, knows that it all depends on what allows individuals to survive the most and breed the most offspring that them also survive and breed the most. That's it. That doesn't always require complexity. If it did, clever people would be the sexiest people.
