The devastating aftermath of the Turkey-Syria earthquakes | DW News

As the dust begins to settle in Turkey, questions are being asked about construction scams and the politics that allowed unsafe structures to be built. The earthquake, which also hit northern Syria, claimed more than 35,000 lives in Turkey and 6,000 in Syria. Those numbers have been rising by the hour.
According to Turkish authorities, nearly 13 million people in 10 cities have been affected, and at least 33,143 buildings have either collapsed, been severely damaged or require immediate demolition. The number is likely to rise as officials continue to assess the damage. An estimated 1 million people are currently without shelter. Most of them are living in tents or student dormitories.
Now, as the public's initial shock wears off and the dust settles, the sheer scale of the devastation is becoming even more apparent. And with that also comes the question of who is to blame. "Destiny's plan includes such things," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told an earthquake victim during his brief visit to the region, 56 hours after the disaster. In response, many locals asked on social media, "Why doesn't destiny ever visit Japan?" Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay pointed the finger at 134 builders from the region who have been arrested across the country on suspicion of shoddy or negligent construction. Some were arrested at airports as they attempted to flee the country with large sums of cash.
The Ministry of Justice sent a letter to prosecutors to establish "Earthquake Crime Investigation Offices." But the recent history of earthquake investigations in Turkey raises the question of whether senior officials, who were allegedly negligent in the inspection and approval processes, will actually be punished. That has not been the case in the past.

What an awful tragedy! Imagine being asleep in your bed to be abruptly awakened to your house or apt. Building falling down on top of you!! Laying there trapped, scared, cold, hungry , waiting for rescuers hoping & praying someone hears you , finds you. Wondering if your children are alive and other relatives in nearby buildings are alive and you have to stay where you are and wait. And if God willing you are found to get medical treatment and leave hospital and return to ?? No home, no clothing, all personal memorabilia gone! Prayers to these poor people from Pennsylvania, USA

Earthquakes don’t kill people, it’s the falling buildings that do. It’s so very tragic that virtually all of these deaths were preventable - over 40,000 known dead to date and the fatality count continues to climb. With every day that goes by, fewer and fewer trapped survivors will be rescued, it’s now been over 10 days since the quake. It devastates me to think of the suffering of the people enduring weeks of being trapped under rubble, cold, thirsty and in pain, praying and hoping desperately for rescue, only to die at last, it’s beyond horrible. Turkey has to get serious now about developing seismically-safe building codes, and especially, enforcing them. There will be a lot of rebuilding, this is Turkey’s chance to get it right this time, cost be hanged. Saving lives in case of earthquake, fire, etc., should be the first priority in designing and constructing every single building. If money is tight, just build more slowly, don’t cut corners. I hope my country and others will send aid to help in the rebuilding. I’m praying for the people of this region, God goes by a different name to me, but there is only one of Him, after all, He will hear us.

As a engineering student i notice their crumbled buildings that it was lack of support beams & iron skeleton framings, I don't know if they made it cheap or they were too over confident that it was strong just because they haven't hit by a hard earthquake before. So many lives, is hard to even think about it, it takes the breath away. I noticed a lot of those buildings used very small diameter rebar including supporting columns and not very densely packed, a lot of walls were just fill in with bricks and concrete which stands no chance versus earthquake, some buildings flip over indicating weak foundations which where placed to shallow in the ground. I'm not an engineer but I seen construction sites in America, most structures are build with thick steel beams incased in concrete in that concrete rebars are way thicker and more densely packed and foundations are dag deep into the solid bedrock. Sorry to say that but engineers need to make drastic changes there, buildings shouldn't collapse on such a massive scale.

There are architects in Turkey who are unemployed. Not enough contractors are interested in earthquake retrofitting because they don't want to pay for it. Bribery and pay-offs circumvent Turkish building codes. Back in 2019 Erdogan bragged about giving contractors a pass on following building codes. Sadly, bribery and cronyism has been a way of life for a very long time in Turkey. This culture of bribery also afflicts other countries that were previously conquered by the Ottoman Empire

Footage there showed an apartment building that had fallen over rather than pancaked. That would have provided more opportunity to survive, but would have been a hard landing for people higher up in the building.

This the most saddest thing I have ever seen. When the man started talking about his baby I couldn’t take it. The lady talked about they don’t know how long it will take to rebuild the city but I wouldn’t want to be there anymore experiencing something so traumatic. May God bless the families

It's so heartbreaking. My heart goes out to everyone there. I should hope that the nations involved will make that area a no-habitation zone.

Where are the steel beams you expect to see in the case of the taller buildings? All I see is thin iron rods.

This is unbelievably Heartbreaking, I hope that these survivors can rebuild their lives away from these clearly deadly fault lines with international help. I can't imagine the shock and grief, the trauma of lives, livelihoods and homes gone in an instant. I feel heartbroken for everyone honestly and i’d love to support… How can i support financially?
