Did you know that country music singer Faron Young committed suicide in 1996, or did you think that he was still out there somewhere singing his songs? Faron Young was the youngest of six children, and he developed a talent for singing to stand out from his brothers and sisters. Although initially dreaming of being a pop singer, the young boy changed his dream to be a country music singer after witnessing Hank Williams performing on Louisiana Hayride.

Not too long after witnessing Hank Williams perform on Louisiana Hayride, Faron Young was performing on the program himself! The young man broke onto the country music scene in the 1950s, signing with Capitol Records and releasing his first charting single in 1952. The singer would go on to release several hits in the genre, including “Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young” and “If You Ain’t Lovin’ (You Ain’t Livin’)”. Faron’s biggest hit would come in the early 1960s, when he released a cover of Willie Nelson’s “Hello Walls”. The cover became a crossover hit on the charts.
Sadly, Faron Young’s popularity began dwindling considerably into the 1970s, and he was nowhere near the star that he had been previously by the start of the 1980s. Around this time, Faron's excessive drinking also caused him to behave strangely, resulting in an incident where he was charged with spanking a young attendee at one of his concerts. By 1996, few people remembered Faron, and not many noticed when he decided to end his own life at the age of 64. Join Facts Verse as we explore the devastating loss of Faron Young that no one noticed.

I admit I learned about Faron Young when watching Ken Burns documentary Country Music. He stuck up for Charlie Pride, a young African American singer, breaking into Country music back in the 1960's(may have date wrong). Faron & Charlie remained lifelong friends🥰

Good for Faron for supporting Charlie Pride. I remember when he came on the scene. He had such a great voice and wrote and sang so many good songs that I don't think many people held his race against him. You could only hear him on the radio, and he was so good. Everybody initially assumed he was white. People were surprised when they found out he was black. Regardless, Charlie Pride had a long and successful career, and deservedly so. The only hate Ray Charles ever got for going country was from black friends. "Modern Sounds in Country Music" was a huge album success for Ray Charles. And it was white people who bought it.

Faron Young to me was a cool singer! I always liked too hear his music. I'm 65 and when I hear his music it takes me back to our black and white TV listening to the Grand Ole Opry, The Wilburn Brothers , Porter Wagoner and others. My brother Faron Young I never new that he had committed suicide , but be that it may I still like to hear his music. I missed the verse on Barbara billingsley if you get a chance could you slide it back so I can see what was said about her costume. But keep the history coming so I can find out what I never new okay.

I didn't know he committed suicide that's a shame I loved his voice and all his work and songs I met him with my friend at Conway Twitty's house in June of 1985 , he was such a nice guy I didn't know who he was at the time he introduced himself to me and my friend talked to me and my friend about how he and Elvis learned to water ski what a funny and great story. He took pictures with us signed autographs and was a totally Wonderful and friendly gentleman. After I met him I started to listen to his music and began to become a huge fan ,I didn't know he killed himself I pray GOD has mercy on him for that ,I would love to see him some day in heaven, I've met a lot of stars over the years none of them as nice as Faron was ,Conway , wasn't even that nice when I met him.Faron had just as much talent as any of them and very humble and kind as well. I will always remember how Faron treated me a nobody like a somebody . May Faron Young rest in peace in the Presence of Our LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST YESHUA AMEN!

Faron was a big deal in the 50s and early 60s. Similar career to Webb Pierce who had hit after hit from 52 to 62 and then fell out of favor and into obscurity. The wonderful Stonewall Jackson also struggled to remain relevant after the mid-60s.

So incredibly underrated today....used to be everyone in Nashville had a Faron story.....but that was when most of Nashville was actually Country🙄 He was a fantastic entertainer & personality, who's talent matched and exceeded his larger than life persona. He's the poster boy for Murder On Music Row, every faux Country singer who's appropriated the genre, record exec and industry big wigs who 86'd the Legends, and radio helped pull the trigger that took his life

What a sad ending for such a perfect country singer, one of the best in my opinion. I seem to remember a story where Willie Nelson was stoney broke and needed 200 dollars and was going to sell the rights for his song, hello walls, to faron for the said amount, faron knowing how much Willie would lose out on the future revenue, lent Willie the 200 dollars instead of buying the rights to the song, I think I have that right, from my memory of a great 8 part country music show on TV a few years back.

Faron had balls. He boldly stood up for African-Americans trying to break into country music (most notably the great Charlie Pride) while most everyone else... though not outright approving of how the African-American singers were treated... didn't take a bold personal stand like Faron. It's shameful that he passed away without much note.

A real country country singer, born and raised on a dairy farm near Shreveport Louisiana. Got his start as a singer with Webb Pierce's band (as did the Wilburn Brothers) in the early 1950's on the Louisiana Hayride. Faron presented himself as a songwriter but Webb recognized he was really a better singer. Young also owned the Music City News produced in Nashville. It was the country version of the Rolling Stone magazine. This was in the 1970's. Young was well known for speaking his mind. On a late night show fellow guest Zsa Zsa Gabor made a remark about his "peasant music"

Fiddler Johnny Gimble told the story that he was in a recording session in Nashville on the night Faron Young died. He said, "We were in the middle of a session, and someone came in and told us that Faron Young had just blew his brains out. Everybody was stunned. We all stopped what we were doing, and just stared in disbelief. The whole room was in shock and there wasn't a dry eye among us. It was beginning to look like the session was going to break up. Finally, I broke the ice and said, "Well, he always was a good shot!" That comment had everyone laughing though we were all crying. We were finally able to get back to cutting some records. It sounded crass but the truth is every one of us in that room had been hunting with Faron out on his property many times and we all knew what a great marksman he was. Even if he was stone drunk, he could shoot the acorns out of those squirrel's mouths. That was a sad day. We all knew he was very sick with emphysema and the latest word was the doctors had found a spot on one of his lungs. He was in a lot of pain physically and emotionally. He'd lost his wife, lost his recording career, went bankrupt and lost his house. He was financially broke, and he just didn't feel he had anything left to live for."

What is really hard to deal with sometimes is, our favorite performers were not necessarily great people. Faron Young was not great people. He was an outstanding performer. He clearly had addiction problems, and behavioral problems. Neither of those things prevent me from enjoying his gift to us. Would it be proper to hate van gogh, because he was nuts? Well, I suppose you could, but that's not my point. What I'm getting at is that if you really appreciate this man's contribution, do not deny the reality of his life because it doesn't fit with you comfortably. Sometimes life is not pretty. And please don't get me wrong, I listen to Faron Young songs every week. I've had standing ovations doing karaoke of his songs. Brilliant art.ists are often tortured Souls. It's a human condition.

I am so sad to say that I was not aware that Faron Young had committed suicide ! How extremely sad that the music industry allowed this tragedy to go without saying much about it ! Thereby, almost supporting Faron's belief that he didn't have a place in the music industry anymore ! Almost by their silence, silently encouraging his actions ! Maybe I'm terribly wrong about this ! Speaking of going unnoticed, the loss of "Herbie" Herbert, one of the most prolific music promoters of our lifetimes ! Walter James Herbert left this world with hardly a mention ! "Herbie Herbert was responsible for the creation of, and the promotion of, no less than Santana, and one of the most incredible rock bands on f our lives, " Journey " without so much as a mention on the nightly entertainment shows ! These are significant lives folks ! Whether by natural means, or by their own hand, we should without question make more of an effort to mark the significance of these lives, and likewise, their passing !

I heard about it right after the suicide , but just maybe because I recently got turned on to him, and was basically on a Faron Young kick at that time. I was unaware his death went unnoticed by the Country Music crowd, and this information (if true), shocks me. I'm predominantly a jazz guy, but all "Country Classic" aficionados and musicians should have noticed, at least in my book.

Kathie says…listen to “Hello Walls”. It is one of my Country Classic Favorites, (written by Willie Nelson). It is my favorite Faron Young song.

I was Postmaster of Old Hickory Post Office close to where Faron lived. He came into the post office almost everyday. Sometimes he would knock on my door and started laughing wanting to tell me some "off colored" jokes he had recently heard. He was smiling and laughing almost everytime he came in. The last day Faron came in to the post office, his face was gloomy looking and he didn't seem to be in his normal self. He never said anything and left. Later that day we learned that he had committed suicide. It was a terrible loss to the country music industry I feel as they had shunned him off the Opry for his drinking. He will be missed but his music lives on.

Yes, I knew . It was a sad day for country music & his family. I saw when he was first getting started at Ellis Auditorium In Memphis, Tn. Bought a picture & he signed it for me. Always loved his music. Still do. Such a waste.

I read that he couldn’t even get tickets to the CMA awards not long before he died. That George Strait song “Murder on Music Row” could have easily been about Faron.

I was born In 1967. My parents listened to diverse music but we never heard of Faron young. I did not know of his suicide either nor heard any of his songs even by other artists. I am so sorry for him or anyone who thinks suicide is the way to go. It only hurts people around you.

You left out the fact that Faron's hard partying ways led to a downturn in his health. He was suffering from COPD & heart issues, not to mention that it was getting harder for him to perform. This is why he killed himself.

Like many other narcissists, Faron chose to be charismatic & pleasant around some people however, sometimes very rude and mean to others. He was like a real Jekyll and Hyde who became violent without warning. Hilda and their kids have been spinning for years that he was in a long term marriage to Hilda. The truth is he despised Hilda by 1965 and messed around with lots of women just because he could have fun. The true love of his life was a Canadian singer named Ann. She broke his heart when she told him to call her when he got a divorce. He took his time getting his divorce. After being patient for many years Ann announced she was marrying someone else in February 1997. The suicide happened in December, 1996.

He had more controversies in his life. He started the Music City News magazine because he didn't like the way the CMS picked the winners of their awards. Music City News started an all fan chosen award show!! In the early 70s, he released a song called Here I Am In Dallas than got banned from Country Radio because he sang Where The H
