So it needs an existing working key to read the PIN from? or did it read the PIN from the immobilizer module? If it's the latter can't anyone use this to steal cars or are these sold only to those with a locksmith license etc. Key programming is still confusing to me as a DIYer.

You should get into the habit of reading the key count before doing any key programming. It’ll save you headache for when you have a bad key and you’re not sure if it’s the key, the vehicle, or the programmer. It’s one less thing you gotta figure it out when you if the key count changed or not.
