I've always loved Rob and Laura's living room-dining area. But shouldn't the crescent sofa face the other chairs and dining table? even though it is for a live audience?

I wish Dick Van Dyke can read these comments. Monumental episode script and comedy play. You just don't frequently watch smth and burst into laughing, like I did. Man I can find no words. TALENT.

Dick Van Dyke, is one of the finest physical comedians ever, and at 97, he is a living American treasure and legend! (At 12:10, Where the hypnotist dials the house number to cause the phone to ring, I tried that back in the 60s, but all it gave me was a busy signal)

Oh how interesting. I remember calling the same phone number i was dialing from (several locations) in the 70s and early 80s. I always got a busy signal and would hang up, but from one location (maybe it was in Phoenix; i am not certain), shortly after i hung up, the phone would ring again, but it would ring twice in close succession, then once as usual, then repeat that sequence until i picked up the receiver, whereupon i would hear only silence. Ah the days before digital technology.

@@markmaki4460 I too lived in the Phoenix area, Glendale, to be exact. Your mention of Pheonix reminded me of when I was a teen in Glendale; I held the phone until the dial tone ceased, then I could hear a girl speaking. We chatted for a bit, then exchanged phone numbers. I called her and we talked, but my family moved back to Illinois before I could pursue it further. Ah, what could have been! lol!

me bro used to do that to play tricks on us (we lived in a small town, williamsville, ny. he would dial our house #, then hang up really quickly. when it rang, he'd pick it up, then call someone to the phone (to hear nothing).

It was a timing thing, you had to dial and hang up at precisely the right second, after the call goes through but before it registers that you're calling your own phone. An art unto itself!

Carl Riener loved this comedy routine of Dick's from early on and worked it into this show. He does a similar routine when he has the flu and has to pretend he's OK in The Death of the Party.

He delivered the first glass, before he intercepted the hypnotic suggestion (that was when he drank Richie’s water and acted drunk after the stimulus with the bell) after which he forgot to give Richie the second glass.

@@MrMenefrego1 I understand why you think that, but Rob never gets upstairs with the water. He starts to walk out of the kitchen(*the wrong way but we can ignore that*) but then gets drunk stumbles back in with the glass undelivered and then starts a slapstick routine. Also, thank you. Almost everyone thinks I was in the atom's family. So Annoying!
@hollybigelow5337

Actually, he does. It's very subtle, and it doesn't say it outright, but notice at 12:04 he notices that the glass is empty and refills the glass. We cut away and come back, and at 12:14 Rob leaves the kitchen, sober, with a full glass of water, presumably headed to Richie's room. Then at 12:21 he comes back into the kitchen acting drunk, and most importantly no longer carrying a glass of water. It may be very quick, but I'm pretty sure we are supposed to assume that between 12:14 and 12:21 Rob delivered the glass of water to Richie through a back hallway. Keep in mind that TV time is always intended to be interpreted as compressed and edited time. It could be possible for Rob to do something as simple as delivering a glass of water if Richie's door is immediately out of sight in 7 seconds, but if those 7 seconds in real time represent 5 minutes of time in the actual story that wouldn't be unusual. Whenever we hear any story, we know that certain parts are compressed and edited out. Otherwise a story that lasts 24 hours would literally take 24 hours to tell/depict. In this particular case, because the action has to be synchronized with the action in the front room, I tend to lean towards the idea that Richie's door is literally there and it literally did take Rob 7 seconds of story time to deliver the water, but either interpretation is completely reasonable.
@hollybigelow5337

@@hermanmunster1054 Do they say that Richie's room is upstairs? I must have completely missed that. I always assumed they had a downstairs, but not an upstairs. I also assumed there was a hallway between the front room and the kitchen that goes behind and that a bathroom and the entrance to Richie's room were on that hallway. It's pretty clear from several episodes that if you exit to the right you go straight into the garage, so I'm not entirely sure why you are saying Rob turning left out of the kitchen would be the wrong way. I must have missed a lot about the actual layout of the house to have imagined something so different.

A fully qualified hypnotist tried to hypnotize me 40 years ago. I was so bored with his attempts, got up and walked out. The only funny part of this episode is the office scene, and that could have carried the whole episode.
