The four minute argument in the middle between Rob and Laura is one of the great scenes in TV writing. A masterclass.

Note at the very end when they all bombard Rob with copies of the magazine, he hands his own copy for Alan to throw at him. It is a small little bit that lightens the whole ending with affection.

Colter Reed Lyrics to the Dick Van Dyke Show One of the gems from Dick Van Dyke’s appearance on Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me was the revelation that the theme song to The Dick Van Dyke Show had lyrics. They were written by Morey Amsterdam, who played Buddy Sorrell. So you think that you’ve got troubles? Well, trouble’s a bubble So tell old Mr. Trouble to get lost! Why not hold your head up high and Stop cryin’, start tryin’ And don’t forget to keep your fingers crossed. When you find the joy of livin’ Is lovin’ and givin’ You’ll be there when the winning dice are tossed. A smile is just a frown that’s turned upside down So smile, and that frown will defrost. And don’t forget to keep your fingers crossed.

The captivating actress Valerie Yerke, the 'News Time' reporter in, 'My Husband is the Best' also appeared in 2 additional episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show; that I am aware of, anyway. Valerie also appeared as the timid 'Cynthia Harding,' the sexy, single kindergarten teacher in 'Somebody Has to Play Cleopatra,' and finally as 'Miss Thomas'; in 'Three Letters from One Wife.' I can't imagine why a beautiful, talented actress like Valerie Yerke didn't go on to do more television programs and/or movies. 🤔

Sometimes charisma has a lot to do with it. Mary Tyler Moore had it and so did Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman who was not only charismatic but talented as well as those from the MTM Show.

Alan Brady's voice was bordering on psychotic in this episode. By the end of the scene, he was howling with anger at Mel Cooley.

This is one of three episodes where Laura talked to much and caused trouble. Another where she was on a show and the host tricked in telling about Alan Brady's tuppe collection titled "Coast to coast big mouth." The other I don't recall atvthe moment

Um, she's performing scripted lines for a situation comedy. It's from sixty or so years ago and it's all scripted. They're NOT really married and he isn't really a writer for Allen Brady .............

this is something I read online: For the first three seasons of the show, Alan Brady's face was never seen but his voice was occasionally heard, because Carl Reiner wanted to get a bigger star to play Alan. Reiner eventually decided to take on the role himself as the newest on-screen star.

...because it's called the 'Dick Van Dyke' show, not the 'Carl' show; previously Carl starred in the forerunner show to this and decided, for whatever reason, that he was more effective when used occasionally.

When he shows his face and his talent they created some of the best episodes such as October Eve or the one where Laura tells the world that Allan is bald.

Me, too. Although, to be fair that’s a sign of good writing. I’m convinced she is supposed to seem unreasonable at times. She is not one of these modern-day Mary Sue characters who have no flaws whatsoever. None of the characters in this series are 2 dimensional. Alan Brady may come off as juvenile, selfish, petty, stingy, etc., and yet there are moments when he goes to bat and risks his position to protect his staff. A lot of his anger also must be bluster, because even though he is always threatening to fire everyone, he pretty much never follows through in spite of some pretty good motivations to do so. Rob may generally be a pretty good guy, but in this episode he shows his attribution bias and admits he thinks the show’s success is due to him. His people pleasing and paranoia and ego get him into some pretty funny situations, but they are definitely personality flaws. Buddy and Pickles are always picking each other, but it also is pretty clear they adore each other when it matters and are even miserable when they aren’t together. I could go on, but the point is every character on the show has both good and bad attributes. Laura’s failings tend to grate on me the most, though, because even though the stories pretty clearly demonstrate the consequences of her failings and show she is wrong, it’s never explicitly said, and she uses that common excuse that so many women use that the woman is always right, and I guarantee many viewers come away believing she actually was right or at least wasn’t THAT wrong, and that drives me crazy because it’s basically a sign that our society is fine calling out toxic masculinity but is terrified to call out toxic feminist and even sometimes society even calls that toxic behavior good, justified, etc. I don’t think it’s the series’ fault, but I do wish they’d do a better job of helping the viewer realize the behavior being portrayed is genuinely toxic.
