Some of the finest character actors are in this episode, Starting with the ubiquitous Allan Melvin as Sam Pomeroy, Peter Hobbs as Captain Lebost, Kathleen Freeman as Mrs. Campbell, and Johnny Silver as Alfred Campbell. There just don't seem to be many of the same types of character actors in modern-day television that once were so beloved to us in the 50s through to the 80s or so, and Burt Mustin was their unofficial king.

My favorite bit player in Dick Van Dyke was Frank Adamo - everything from singing telegrams to PTA member. It was fun trying to spot him in various episodes.

I've noticed that the last name Lebost is used a few times during this series: Eddie Lebost to take Rob's place in a game of Bridge in one episode, and one other episode but the first name wasn't Eddie. I wonder if it was the name of someone in Carl Reiner's personal life.

You got that right! Always keeping my eye out for the consummate character actors. In addition to the ones you just mentioned I look for Herbie Faye. Amzie Strickland. Between the Dick Van Dyke show and Andy Griffith show Amzie was pretty busy.

I have always wondered why Buddy and Sally are sitting in the Petrie's living when Rob comes home from work, in the opening sequence. Wouldn't they have been at work with Rob?

Any person with two eyes, especially an army officer, needs a doctor if he can accept Rob's disguise to look like any girl, let alone Laura.

That was the whole point. The officer clearly knew it was Rob running across the field.

Um, the Rockola jukebox in the PX is from 1959. The pinball looks to be an early 50s Bingo machine...pity the set dec person didn't go for accuracy!

Actually, Allen Melvin..."Sam the butcher," as you call him (of the Brady Bunch), had numerous roles in The Andy Griffith Show, as well as a few on The Dick Van Dyke show, among many others. He was a very flexible character, was in various other shows, including "My Favorite Martian," "Gomer Pyle, USMC," "All in the Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place." He was also a voice character on numerous cartoons of the day, as well as having had a part in The Phil Silvers Show, which was probably before your time. It's one I barely remember, me being just a little kid when that one was on. He was a lot more than just "Sam the butcher"!

@@nancyhowell4505 Allen Melvin was far, far more than just "Sam the butcher" on the Brady Bunch. He acted in a great many shows, hundreds of episodes across a number of shows, and was a voice character for a fair number of popular cartoons of the day. He had a rather impressive range of characters he played. He's on Wikipedia if you want to find out more.

There's another one of those STUPID flashback episodes!! They ruined such a great show with those 😞 (I'm not even going to BOTHER watching this one)

I think Rose Marie's husband die during season 3 (in May, I believe), so they may have had to rescript shows. I'm just guess on this one. But usually when they do these flashbacks in tv land it is usually because one or more actors and unavailable for filming.
