Then you get guys like Mertens who doesn't even have a coach with him let alone a bodywork person

As a former natural bodybuilder and current CrossFitter / affiliate owner, I think Crossfit and bodybuilding are the same. Community and training is pure joy, and the reason it was created and why we started. Competition squeezes all the joy and purpose out of it and make it just another misreable, money grubbing, PED using activity.

One of the factors that isn’t mentioned, and can have a huge impact is simply things like getting a cold or flu just before traveling, or during travel, and that can have an impact on the entire competition for athletes, who otherwise would qualify.

That 5th gear is key. Who is ready and willing to go there and hurt a good bit. You can really see it in Event 5 (asserting most athlete's potential speed is very similar re: Games' 600m run ).

TTT has to have athletes that were 40-80 in their region. Are they saying they aren't approaching CF "professional" enough? What about Berman. What separates him from the top 10? I doubt it's effort and professionalism.

You forget good form vs just being insanely strong. When you watch Panchik vs Fraser clean compo, it’s very obvious that one has excellent form while the other compensates with strength. People who are in top ten have both covered very well, while bottom ten probably got one or the other but not both

Is this a chicken vs egg thing? Top 10 Athletes have more on the line in that moment and behave different. Athletes 40-60 know they are there to do their best, but also know their chances are unlikely. Don't lots of athletes in 20-200 train all year like professions but maybe with fewer paid resources? My gym has a top 60 woman in NA East and she is dialed in all year based on what I heard hear minus specialists work which is likely a money factor
