Tipping is a perfect example of a country founded on hard conservatism and industry rights over workers rights. There are not labour laws ensuring workers are payed enough to live off and so they require tips to live. Of course, by no means is New Zealand perfect, but at least in regards to paying workers I think we have better legislation. So probably the reason tips freak us out is because they are indicative of the people who are barely being paid by their employers. That said, I've been to America recently and pretty much everyone seemed to be lovely people and maybe we're all just being scared of a different culture.

Tipping is a good thing. Here's an example. A friend of mine waits tables. She brings home (on average) almost $1,000 a week in tips. If some people who want wages raised had their way, she'd get no tips and her pay would be about $380 *before taxes*. That's not very much money. She'd probably need a 2nd job or have to quit hers to try to find one that paid much more (if it were possible for her to get a job that paid that much).

At every store we had to explain what it was and it seemed like no one knew what we were talking about. Finally at the last store, the clerk was like "oh, you mean a chilly bin" and we just kind of stood there like 🤷‍♀️ So that's been an inside joke between us now back in the States, we'll just go around calling coolers "chilly bins." In my part of America (Appalachian region, Kentucky specifically) we also call gumboots "galoshes." Also, we call that a trailer, too. We have a lot of different kinds of trailers. Basically anything you tow behind a vehicle is a trailer (you know, because it trails behind the car?). And some Americans will tell you that flip flops are also called "thongs" here, but they're WRONG!! Don't listen to those Americans! ;-)

Learning new things here. I'm a Brit. Never knew Americans called wellies (wellington boots) "rainboots" but it makes sense once you think about it.... Just like you we call both "doughnuts" (and also those non-holed but circular jam/custard-filled lovelies).... In England we just tip to round up.... "Kia ora" is a juicy orange drink here.... I love the term "chilly bin" (only just learnt) but that's a "cool box".... Candy = lolly?? Lollies are the frozen ones (US = popsicle). Candies are sweets.... And we have even better pies. Steak. Steak and ale. Pork. Mmhmmm. We've got northerners to thank for that.... For some reason I buy eggs off the shelf but keep them in the fridge?.... We have sheep too though! Mostly in Wales but also all over the English countryside. But only the former enjoy carnal relations with them.... I think they have that in common with you lot? (;

Both are called trailers. Because they trail behind a truck. A boat, train, and another car are pretty much the only things that are pulled behind a truck that aren't considered a trailer. There are lots of different kinds of trailers camping trailers, horse trailers, car trailers, semi-truck trailers, and then there's also a mobile home. Those can also be called trailers too. Lots of trailers.

Eggs are a bit different in New Zealand compared to America. In America, eggs must be washed to be sold. This removes the natural protective coating, which is why they have to be refrigerated. We don't do that here, so we can safely just store our eggs outside of the fridge with no fuss. (I think the UK and Europe are also similar in their no-wash eggs.)

We tow stuff in trailers like yours, also called trailers. You know, because it trails your truck. Coolers keep stuff cooler than not using a cooler, like eggs. We’re pretty inventive with naming stuff. We have a huge military only because we’re deathly afraid of sheep, and New Zealand might decide to invade us one day. We also have a huge military, because some other countries might not be afraid of sheep… and you might need to borrow some of our military. Your American accent would fit in very well in North Carolina… one of our states. But oddly enough, your New Zealand accent would fit in well in North Carolina.

Tipping in the U.S. is not complicated. Take the pre-tax total of your bill (also called the subtotal) and calculate 15-20%. That is what you leave. In all 50 states. (But only in sit-down restaurants where your food is brought to you. Tip jars in a fast-food restaurant are truly optional.)

@Kiki-cs8xv

rabbitss11 Yes, and Americans tend to tip people here as a matter of custom, but it does confuse a lot of New Zealanders. I had some friends who left a tip on the table in their hotel room (for the maid) and they were really offended when they came back and found their money still on the table, only now in an envelope with their name on it. They thought that the maid was telling them that their money wasn't good enough. I had to gently explain that the maid was just saying "hey, I see you accidentally left some money lying out in your room, so I've put it in this envelope to show you that I saw it but didn't steal it". Service staff in NZ would never want to make the assumption that money left in sight is there for them to take. I once saw a waitress chase a customer out of a restaurant because he "forgot" some cash on his table. Americans seem to get a bit insulted by this until they figure out that tipping is not customary here.
@rabbitss11

I'm really glad to hear tipping is still not generally recognised in NZ, it's one of those customs that causes embarrassment and upset even if it's well meant - say you get a taxi ride that costs £9 you pay with a tenner and say 'keep the change' isn't that really sort of an insult?
@SereniaSaissa
@SereniaSaissa 5 жыл бұрын
@@rabbitss11 I do that all the time when I am in a taxi. It's me just wanting to get out of the car ASAP and I dont want to wait for the driver to look for change!! I guess you can call that an insult - but hey they get some extra money!! They have to pay between 1/3 to 1/2 of their total income every day to the taxi company to pay for the dispatcher and then pay taxes on the rest!!
