Yes, I'm fully aware that there were a few errors in this video. (Metric system, 10 yards for a kick, missed field goal is live, Alaska is not part of Canada etc.) I corrected these with annotations, which you should be seeing in the video as the errors come up. Can people please stop pointing these things out, as they appear on screen and it's visible enough to read? This was one of my first attempts at video production and have improved massively since 3 years ago.

Yes, it is pass-heavy compared to the NFL. But the running game is very important for any Cup contending teams in the league; without one, teams rarely win The Grey Cup. It has quite a following in the US and has always been on ESPN just never publicized. My dad use to watch it all the time in the 80s when I was a kid. The CFL also had a hand in the rise of the Baltimore Ravens. When the owner of the then Cleveland Browns saw that sell out crowds were drawn to the CFL team Baltimore Stallions, he abruptly moved the original Cleveland Browns to Baltimore. One major aspect of the waggle is that it really changes the technique of the Defensive Backs. it is virtually impossible to jam a receiver who is coming to the line at speed and has a two way go. So DB's give the motion receivers more cushion and this makes coverage more difficult. It is one of the reasons why a tight end is rare in Canada Why use a receiver who is frozen until the snap? and more easily jammed.

I've always live in the Chicago area, so my frame of reference is the NFL. But I agree that Canadian football is an interesting and lively variant with its own intrigue. Love the CFL field goal rules. For a while when I was a boy in the late 1960s, a CFL game was broadcast weekly on TV. My Dad gravitated to the Hamilton Tiger Cats because of his regard for his in-laws, the Hamiltons. Now in my early 60s I find myself pulling for the Tiger Cats. Maybe a psychiatrist can explain it all to me, but I should think it's harmless, and it is fun. I'm trying to manufacture a good reason to be in the area so I can take in a Tiger Cats game.

Ninh Ly By the way union is much better than league. Union although it might have some breaks they're aren't as long as football breaks. Also league is too repetitive and union actually is quite fast now. Just watch some six nations and compare it to state of origin. Union has more diversity as it has more kicks and passing although the hits aren't as hards. Them scrums,the mauls, the competitive rucks,and the tension leading up to a penalty goal is what makes union far better. Don't forget the classy lineouts.I've watched both league and union and those were my observations based on that and I'm American so I did not really grow up with a certain code.

@elliyahugenesove97775 жыл бұрын
The 5 yards are given cuz of no fair catch
@reelkonversationswithryank49454 жыл бұрын
"No yards for punts" is true, except for the punter and anyone else who is behind him at the time the ball leaves his foot (they are said to be "onside"). The reason the no yards rule doesn't exist for Kick-offs is that everyone from the kicking team is behind the kicker (they are all onside). If anyone gets ahead of the kicker, they would be offside, which is not allowed, and would result in a penalty.
@CanuckGod2 жыл бұрын
Also, the no yards rule has changed in 2022 to where the penalty being assessed for no yards in all instance is now 15 yards, whereas it used to be more or less depending on whether or not the ball was caught off the bounce or in-air - the same 5 yard halo still applies. In reality, both American and Canadian codes have some way to protect the returner, this is just the alternative to having a fair catch.

Canadian football was invented first? Wow, I learned something today.

+Nicholas Garcia It was invented first, but in its original iteration it looked a lot more like rugby union than it does today. Eventually, it adopted many of the American rules, which is why the two sports look very similar today.
@stonecoggins1078 жыл бұрын
silkentresses There is no denying that the Harvard-McGill game is very important in the history of American football, as it signaled the point that Americans began to shift away from association football type rules to rules that more closely resembled rugby union. So Canada was instrumental in introducing rugby to America. But it was an American, Walter Camp, who took those rugby-like rules and altered them to make them more closely resemble the games we know today. He was responsible for adding the line of scrimmage, down-and-distance, and blocking to the game, as well as standardizing the points system and the size of the field. Canada adopted the Burnside rules about 20 years after Camp made most of his innovations - the Burnside rules are very similar to the brand of American football that Camp pioneered. I'm not sure where you found that quote, but it doesn't gel with any of the history I have ever heard. I have always heard that it was Camp that reduced the number of players to 11 in 1880, several years after the Harvard-McGill game. Also, there wouldn't have been any downs used at all in 1874, since those were also added to the game by Camp in the 1880s as a direct response to teams abusing his scrimmage rules and holding on to the ball for long periods of time. He originally suggested three downs to move the ball five yards, which he later changed to four and ten. The Burnside rules introduced a similar setup - three downs and ten yards - to the Canadian game. So if the question is, "which nation played football of some kind first," the answer is Canada. But if the question is, "which nation introduced the rules that make gridiron football unique from soccer and rugby," the answer is the U.S.

@@yannick245 my guess is the CFL corporate ownership wasn't financially strong enough to promote their product against the competition (NFL)...without the deep pockets, you can't drive the consumers out of their hiding places/established perches, and into the stands, where they belong. it's a trust-mechanism, before any serious business can establish a clientele. NFL players make so much more - so why would anyone leave that league to player in the lower-cost/lower-popularity league? - so, the talent won't be as comparable, even if the game is better in the CFL...people are sometimes corrupt, like that. take for example the Democrats vs. Republicans. one party is seriously corrupt...but, they're so well established, they can't be taken off their perch. think about Islam, and how obstinate Muslims are...they won't convert to a peaceful religion...same reasons. corrupt.

nosupa CFL Players usually become late draft picks as they are older and have less of a 'shelf-life' than a college kid. They also question whether a Canadian Footballer will adapt back to the American Game. The CFL has it's own draft and some players are picked twice, once by both leagues. Either way, you won't find a CFL player in the first three rounds of any NFL draft. As for the veterans of the NFL playing in the CFL: a lot of them struggle to adapt to the 3 downs, wider field and various nuances to the game. Most recently former Heismann Trophy winning QB Troy Smith signed with the Montreal Alouettes and absolutely stunk up the joint. Chad Ochocinco is doing okay with the Allouettes, but the people who find the most success tends to be in a specialised role. I.e. Kickers, Special Teams, etc.

I prefer the CFL but after joining an NFL fantasy league have come to like the NFL as well. You're right that an NFL all-star steam would likely destroy a CFL all-star team, but that's not because the CFL game is inferior - it's because the US is 10 times larger than Canada and the NFL makes billions of dollars more than the CFL, which it invests (some of) back into the game. Comparing the two leagues is like comparing apples to oranges. Personally, I think you can enjoy both (I also enjoy NCAA football quite a bit) without getting into a dick swinging contest about who's players are "better".

Great video, loved that people are treating the CFL with the respect it deserves. But just a question about something you said. How does having three downs make it harder for the defence? That makes it so they only have to make two stops before a punt. Besides this I agree with everything you've said 👍🏻👍🏻

The wide open nature of the CFL game means that 4 downs would be a nearly insurmountable advantage for the offense. The use of 3 downs fits the balance between offense and defense. When you think of it; after 150 yrs, the game has evolved to a place where all the rules more or less mesh sufficiently for the game. The statement in the video appears to be a bit of a mistake.

Someone may have mentioned this already, but the ball differences date to pre-2000’s when the manufacturer changed to Wilson from Spalding. Prior to 1986 the ball size was “28 1/2 inches and the short axis circumference between 21 1/8 and 21 3/8 inches long” (from cfldb). The Spalding J5V was made by hand and my original in 1982 was $60 on sale. They changed the graphic in 1984 and $80 was the going rate. Each ball was a bit different because of the hand made aspect.

@Benjiefrenzy6 жыл бұрын
Mark Dewald It is an objectively faster paced game
@markdewald53236 жыл бұрын
No Ben it's not. Go compare an NFL roster to a CFL roster at the skilled positions and you will see that NFL players are faster and bigger than their CFL counterparts. The CFL simply appears faster because it is played on a bigger field with smaller defensive players in a game that favors the offense. Pretty easy to spread the field when all receivers are allowed to be in motion before the ball is snapped. This of course prevents the defense from being able to stack the box and forces them into zone defenses. The biggest difference is the defensive secondaries. Canadian defensive secondaries are very undersized compared to the NFL and are not among the most talented or best paid on a CFL roster. This is totally contrary to the NFL where some of the best athletes and highest paid players are on the defensive side of the ball. There is a massive talent gap in the CFL when it comes to receivers versus defensive ends and corners. This is why the CFL APPEARS to be a faster paced game, but the reality is they are slower than NFL players. Actual game time is comparable between the 2 leagues and actual number of plays is also comparable for both leagues (135-160 total plays per game). So OBJECTIVITY speaking, it is not faster paced at all. It's all perception my friend.
@Benjiefrenzy6 жыл бұрын
Mark Dewald The NFL has 40 second timeouts between each play, the CFL only has 25 seconds. 3 downs in the CFL means that the ball needs to move up the field quicker. CFL players are smaller and therefore faster and have more finesse. CFL games regularly go into the 50+ point range, NFL games are more in the 30 point range. There are more possessions in the CFL. The CFL is a faster paced game than the NFL.

Excellent video. The only (minor) error is that a missed field goal is a live ball in American football - it can be picked up and run with by the other team. The reasons this almost never happens, however, are that most kicks either hit the ground in the end zone (which makes it automatically dead) or it is declared dead because nobody touched it in the field of play (usually after a block, where neither team has any reason to touch it). However, on really long field goal attempts, especially to end halves, teams usually have a returner back to try and make a return (Just last year there was a college game [Auburn-Alabama] where Auburn won by returning a missed field goal for a touchdown). In Canadian football, however, the other team has an incentive to make sure it doesn't go out the end zone (to not concede the point), plus the end zones are longer and the goals are on the goal line, meaning there is a better shot for a return.
@NinhLyUK10 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric. I'm pretty sure the NFL rules the missed field goal as dead. But you are right, in NCAA it is ruled live. Because a live missed field goal rarely happens, I had to make a few sweeping generalities with regard to some of the rules. Explaining the rule differences between Canadian Football, NFL Football, NCAA Football & International American Football would have confused the crap out of everyone! Thanks again!
@tempe8510 жыл бұрын
Ninh Ly You can indeed advance a ball in American Football after a field goal miss. Ravens Chris McAlister 107 yard field goal return
@bjdon9910 жыл бұрын
Ninh Ly Because the goalposts are at the back of the endzone in US football, the ball is rarely in play on a missed FG. Usually the only time you see it is at the end of the first half (or in the Auburn/Alabama game at the end of regulation.) In most other occurances, either the ball goes into the stands, or if it is caught short, it would actually be a better outcome for the team to take the ball at the point of the kick instead of try to run it 55yds out of the endzone.
@goodmaro9 жыл бұрын
Ninh Ly The ball on the kick becomes dead in both codes on hitting the ground in the end zone untouched by a player, but otherwise the ball becomes dead only at the regular termination of play regardless it was an attempt at goal. In Federation rules (played by most high schools in the USA and most children's football) the kick becomes dead at the plane of the opposing goal line (if failing to score), but otherwise regardless of whether it was an attempt at goal, just like a punt, the spot of the next snap is according to regular rules, and does not come back to either the previous spot or the spot of the kick. NFL distinguished play from a field goal attempt from that of a punt in 1974, and NCAA later, while the Federation never did.

The point I was trying to make was to dispel the myth that Canadian Football blatantly copied the rules and changed them to form their own game. There are people out there that think that Canadian Football was invented in the 1980's or later!!! (See Austin White's comments for a prime example) Yes, you are correct that they have a shared origin, but even then Canadians played their version of football (which was more like Rugby Union) in 1861 before the Americans adopted Walter Camp's rules in 1880. Canadians then adopted the Burnside Rules in 1903 which made Canadian Football more like what American Football is today. Thanks :)

while the CFL should be proud of its game I believe there are a lot rules they could revisit to make the game more enjoyable to watch. my biggest beef with the CFL is the stoppage of the clock on every play once the each half hits the 3 minute warning. the last 3 minutes of each half take excruciating long to finish and slow down the momentum of the game. I find the managing of the clock in the lady 2 minutes of NFL games the most exciting part of the game. because of the stoppage of play on each play after the 3 minute warning cfl games tend to take longer to finish than NFL games. I also don't understand why you would get rewarded a pt for missing a field goal. makes no sense to me. you miss, you get nothing, period.
@krem1able8 жыл бұрын
the thing is, its not only field goals, it is punts too, but I'm canadian and i still dint know exactly how it works. the rule is in place to stop teams from simply taking a knee in the end zine in order to gain yardage
@abesKIA8 жыл бұрын
The goal of the game, is to get the ball across the goal line. How you do it depends on how many points you get. Pass/Carry 6, field goal 3, kick 1. The decision to run the ball out or concede the single adds another layer of strategy to the game for the coaches.
@alpearson91582 жыл бұрын
your not watching the last three minutes properly, try again. The single point ( rugby related) is a simple exchange of a point for field position and rather than reward a team for missing a field goal it actually provides the receiving team the opportunity to run it out or give up a point and take the ball on the 35. It can be very interesting in a defensive game

It would be good to see some Canadian games on TV, just a taste to compare, but not enough people in NZ would watch it

Barry Nichols Same here in the UK. I think the CFL is only aired in Canada and some Northern US states. I know the Grey Cup is on ESPN UK, but that's about it. For any other games, it's pirated streams all the way!

Tyler Ash Stamps all the way. Maybe we can bring home the Stanely cup too and have the two most beautiful trophies under one roof. Not sure when the last time that was done, if ever.

IntegralBif I'm actually very interested to know if Calgary has had a Grey Cup and Stanley Cup winner at the same time?!

In American football, it is extreeeemmlyyy hard to get 1 point. In Canadian Football, there’s Rouges. (American football, if a team scores a td and goes for a 2pt conversion, and gets tackled in their own end zone ((98 yards behind the line of scrimmage)) it results in a ‘1 point safety’.)

In some ways yes, in some ways no. I also prefer it, but that's probably just us. Thanks bro.

You are right but I prefer cfl because normally when NFL teams are running the play there is a big dog pile but that is just my opinion

This was a great video! I had no idea they were so different. I actually quite like the 110 yard field. Having a "0 zone" is pretty awesome.

I don't even bother to follow NFL football anymore .

2:24 that's the famous 1 point safety! since the ball is ruled dead in the NFL after a missed field goal/xtra point, you can only do that there if it's a two point conversion, but in the CFL it's fine

2:12 THat's the only rule I think is really messed up. Think about it if the game is tied toward the end, the team with the ball is guaranteed to win, can just run out the clock and kick a FG from any distance. I would hope there would be an exception to this rule under those circumstances.

I’m an American and a complete NFL freak but the CFL is a refreshing change. It’s weird to see those massive fields with those end zones bigger than my backyard. Opposing head coaches need binoculars to see each other and the 3 downs take a lot to get used to but the 2 games are similar enough that they compliment each other.

The wider field you'll get used to quite quickly. But yeah, I love the wide open game of Canadian Football. Thanks for stopping by man, check out my channel for more content like this :)

understanding that all gridiron football is essentially running, tackling and blocking makes them far more similar

I’m HUGE NFL Fan, and I ❤❤❤❤ The CFL. Why? It’s different. The little wrinkles of rule, and tactical changes make interesting. Nihn I would love to see you do a video on the exhibition games that have been played between the CFL, and NFL. It’s happened a few times starting in 1941, but there hasn’t been a game between the two leagues since 1961. The NFL won the most games, 8 between the two.

The balls in the CFL were in fact larger, closer to a rugby sized ball, from its roots in that sport. However the size was changed and allowed an American sized Wilson football. (To make the one handed highlight catches that ESPN were supposed to show)

Yes, 'WERE' being the operative word. They used to be bigger but aren't anymore, but people still think they do. Hence the myth.

The "point for missing a field goal" is probably the most misunderstood rule from canadian football. In fact, you don't get a point for missing a field goal. You get a point for preventing the other team's returner from getting out of his end zone. If the other team is able to get out of the end zone, there's no point allowed. Obviously, many times when the returner does not see an opening for a good return, he will take a knee in the zone and trade a point for a better position on the field to start a new drive. It always depend of the actual score and time remaining in the game... Sometimes, you can't even afford to give one more single point to the other team...

2:41 A missed field goal is also live in American Football and scoring a touchdown from a missed field goal is called a Kick Six. The 2013 Iron Bowl (Auburn v. Alabama) is one of the best example of a Kick Six.
