I noticed that as well the first time I drove a gen 1 NSX. I also noticed both cars bucked pretty badly when shifting from 2nd to 3rd unless you did it just right. At least they were consistent with their engineering.

My problem is I buy an old Bester with intention of keeping it a beater but I can't help myself and want to fix and improve it and take care of it. Closest I came to owning a beater was my Suzuki Jimny. I could take it anywhere and park it without fear it would be gone by the time I got back.
@Altek1
@Altek1 4 жыл бұрын
You have no idea how much I miss having a car that I don't give a damn about. Garbage pale in the way, who cares, drive right through it. Someone parked too close? Your problem, not mine. It gives you a sense of freedom . I finally started driving the LS a bit more and I'm constantly on edge. The ride is great to where I'm going, but once I'm there, I get anxious on where I've parked it. I could use me a little Suzuki Jimmy type beater again. Thanks for checking my channel out bud!

fantastic videos. All I can say is should'nt people be selling their stereos for dirt cheap used? 3:20 why we have to buy brand new ones for a old car is hilarious If i were smarter, I'm sure you could go to a junkyard and pull an old one out of a similar car

Not sure if you keep up with comments on old videos or not, but I want to thank you for a;; your info. I recently bought an 88 L myself with only 80k miles, It was owned by an older lady that bought it brand new. She took great care of it and it had all it's maintenance done with records. I guess something like the last 10 years of her life she didn't drive at least not much. I believe it must have been parked under a tree because the paint needs some major polish and love. My insurance agent was the neighbor to the woman and her son bought the car. I'm not sure if he originally bought it for himself or to sell; but he had it less than a year and fom the maintenance records' alone I can see he barely drove it. I got it for 2000. It had some pretty bad oil leaks but everything else was amazing. The leather interior looked almost new. I had the Valve and side gaskets replaced andwent ahead and replaced the timing belt and water pump just to be safe with the age of it. I took it to an Acura/Honda specialist and it cost me about $1500. 'He also inspected everything and put all new belts on.

I just bought a 1990 Legend sedan. Only has 101K miles, body is perfect, runs great but has a weird fluctuating idle (I'm reading this may be a cheap fix of the iacv).
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good find. It's kinda shocking how different the sedan looks from the coupe. Either way, it'll last you a while. There's a billion vacuum lines, so I'd start there. In my case, the rubber elbow near the intake manifold had a big rip in it I didn't notice. I did that, distributor cap, plugs and wires since I wasn't sure of the last time it was done. Mine has been running very well since and has 150k.

@@Altek1 yes you did say that I will trouble shoot it and see, I am in Canada and I can't find much for replacement EGR valve. I think a good cleaning will fix. But ya if it is impossible to get at, not so easy.i saw in your video where those both are located, very helpful. I also I get an oil light from time to time. I don't know the cause it happens usually on hills. She doesn't burn oil, but ticks worse than a clock. Trying to frequently change oil. I believe mine. Is a base model. Cloth interior. A little scuffed up but no rust. Gold, automatic.

Oil pressure was poor and she ticked like a bitch,(new oil) so I ran some sea foam through the throttle, the arosol can stuff. I wish I recorded it. Alot of smoke came out. Like 15 mins worth of smoke the whole block was filled with smoke! But! In the end, against all my doubt in additives, she runs like NEW! Acceleration and shifting in the automatic, seem more in tune. Not so much gear lag now. Definitely a huge improvement. But I still get my EGR engine light 😂 287000kms strong

How's the automatic version of this car? Is it jerky like the second gen one transitioning from 1st to 2nd gear?
@Altek1
@Altek1 4 жыл бұрын
I never had any issues with the transmission overall but it did have some hard shifts especially on hot days, more so if I was in stop and go traffic. To defeat that, I'd keep it in "S3" mode to eliminate 4th gear until I was at highway speeds. That would prevent it from shifting into 4th which would sometimes clunk its way there. Otherwise, under normal use on cool days, smooth as butter. If you find an example with around 100k miles and it's mechanically sound, I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. Thanks for watching bud.

@Altek1
@Altek1 5 жыл бұрын
The timing belt went, I think it was a tensioner since I replaced it about 4 years ago. I had to beat on her to get it to move on the highway because of the egr issue, I think all the abuse caught up to it after a while. A quote of $3800 to repair the engine forced me to junk it. Now if it was the other Legend, I would have fixed it since everything else is immaculate on that one but I couldn't justify the cost with ol Bessy considering all the other potential issues down the road.

Cool video! I'm rocking a 2002 Acura RL with 242k miles and it still looks and drives like new. It's been so good, in fact, that I sold my 2014 Lexus IS 350 and just went back to driving the RL. I did get a new paint job, put a new finish on the rims, stuffed the seats, new infotainment system, and some other aesthetic enhancements. It's also current on all maintenance, including the timing belt. I bought it in 2007 and it's been the best car I've ever owned. I honestly don't think newer Acuras will hold up like these older ones.

That's great to hear. Especially when you get a car like that near new and you maintain it the whole way through, you know to trust it. I'm always a bit nervous spending money on the visual aspect just in the off chance something goes south mechanically. That's why I didn't redo the seats, if I spend $200 on that and the master brake cylinder goes, I'll be upset I spent the money on the seats. In your case, I get it, you've had it for so long. Kudos to you for keeping it going. Thanks for watching!

Good stuff here! Got a kick out of the fact that your passengers can play Tetris in there, and you fixed the exhaust rattle by kicking the tailpipe. I've had a few 'beaters' like this one - they take a licking and keep on ticking. Hopefully you can get that EGR resolved. Seeing some of the details on this car make me miss my 1988 L coupe that I restored a few years ago. And yes, the hinged door on the driver door panel was missing its cover just like your L's is.... gotta love Legend quirks. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks buddy! When I was posting this, I knew you'd specifically get a kick out of it. The Raspberry Pi is a silly addition but I never really use it and I'm lazy to fix the exhaust tip, hah. I didn't want to dump too much into getting the EGR fixed so maybe one day I'll spend the time and swap or clean the pipe. You can always pick up another Legend for a few grand if you can find one, don't let the dream die bro! Picked myself an 89 Legend Coupe 5-speed 2 weeks ago. It's needs a little work, but the body is straight, no rust, 250k miles on the motor, and no mechanical issues. My EGR is also giving me the CEL at highway speeds, either it needs to be cleaned or replaced, haven't troubleshooted it yet.

Nice. My LS is a 5 speed and it's a joy to drive, has plenty of power. I found the worst thing about the EGR is its location. I tried to get the pipe out but everything is in the way. Alex: Nice video and presentation. I own an '87 legend coupe and a '90 gold like yours. Both have 70k on the odometer. The one thing that I love about these cars is the Visibility. You can see for miles in all directions out of the car without obstruction.....a feature that is hard to find on today's models. Even though I have low mileage i have run into 2 problems on these. 1) The AC will only blow cold air for a couple of minutes on the '87 and then blows hot which is a big problem here in Arizona so I use it for my "winter car." The '87 ABS went out, it was making a noisy clicking sound and finally I just pulled the ABS "module" from the circuit board to circumvent the problem. The '90 ABS is just starting to make a similar sound and flash the ABS light on the panel. Have you run into any of these problems with your vehicles? I would love to be able to repair the AC and ABS in order to keep driving these cars but Its hard to find anyone that knows how to fix them or where to get parts. Appreciate if you have any guidance for me. Best Regards, Tim in Arizona

Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed. I've always wanted a Gen2 coupe but heard some horror stories about blown head gaskets. Here's some info from a comment from this guy "reboticon" that I received on Reddit, should put you in the right direction: "Yup, every single one blows head gaskets, and always on the back passenger side. It took us a long time to figure out why because these cars aren't very common, but the community for them is/was great. I went to North American Legend Meet in 2010. Anyway they blow the head gasket there because that is the cylinder that EGR is drawn from. These cars are pre obd2, so they have no way to measure actual EGR flow. They just assume that when EGR opens, there is flow. Carbon builds up in the passages, that cylinder starts to run lean, but the car doesn't realize it because it has no flow detection. Eventually it runs lean and hot enough to warp the compression ring of the gasket there. So, never bypass EGR on these cars unless you unplug the EGR valve, or edit the binary file to completely diable EGR. (My friend spent 4+ years decoding the binary, because the community is so small for them.) Absolutely fantastic driving car, though." Overall, $300 is not much and could make for a fun project car. The Acura Legend forums should be able to guide in the right direction for other known issues. Hope that helps buddy!!

Fuck it... I'm STRONGLY considering buying myself a 20-25 y/o beater car for the sole purpose of offsetting the potential wear/tear of my newer car I'm still paying off. What's the reliability record on mid 90's infinities, just for future reference? Heard Nissans back then were right there with Toyota in terms of long term reliability, but their luxury cars idek... any Lexus, Acura, or Infiniti cars from the 90's that DIDN'T REQUIRE 93 octane? Or do these simply not exist?
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 жыл бұрын
Buying a beater is a great choice to save your fresh new ride, assuming you find something halfway reliable at least. Not that it'll even be a money pit, but it'll be a hassle you won't want to deal with. When looking for used cars, I browse models I think look sharp then see if there's a common theme with how many miles they've lasted, also checking forums for common problems amongst enthusiasts. I had a Legend that lasted until 225k until the auto transmission went so I knew I was set if I found one with only 100k on it in good shape. I'm not too familiar with the Infinitis but I did have a 95 Maxima that ran great. I sold it at around 130k and the next owner had it until about 200k when he sold it. Timing chain and easy to access water pump made major repairs easy. Wasn't a great looking car but I had little choice then. I would think the Infinitis would follow the same reliability unless they added tech that ran into issues but I'm not certain. As far as octane, my Legends suggest 87, but I only go 89 for the beater and 93 for the mint one. Not too sure of the requirements of other manufacturers though.
