Could two nations be any more different?? Canadians and Russians definitely don't see eye to eye on many subjects, but they do have certain things in common that maybe you wouldn't expect. As someone who has a Russian heritage and now lives in Canada, I thought I would go over the differences between the two nations and where I think they differ. I hope you guys enjoy the video and make sure you check out my full length Russian street interviews on Reporterfy's Channel at the links below:

Well, if they're nice then it's genuine. The difference really is the behavior of those who are rude. Would you rather someone be directly harsh or someone who's fake? I think it depends how loud they are. I'm used to the harsh type and it's easier for me to tell them off than to walk circles around people who make it impossible to criticize them.

Call me crazy but I think being nice to someone you just met - even if superficially - is better than being blunt and/or rude to someone just to be "genuine". I definitely met a lot of kind people in Ukraine and Russia - but there's no doubt in my mind that Canada is a much warmer and inviting country than both. My wife is Ukrainian and when we got back to Canada we were in the airport and this Canadian couple came up to us smiling and asking about our dog. We realized in that moment with those people that not a single random person in Ukraine or Russia had just walked up to us and started a friendly conversation. My wife said it first "This is why I like living in Canada more than Ukraine". I agreed with her. I do love Russia and Ukraine - but Canada is to us a much friendlier nation.

I think importance of university is connected with Soviet period and then 90s, when people believed that there’s a bright future where everyone will live in perfect society and to achieve that “collective happiness” you need to do your best in educating yourself and your children so you and others will push society forward through perfecting science and culture. Pretty materialistic, there was even a song “ We were born to make dreams come true “ ( not individual dreams but common Soviet dream) and it has to do with defying soul and religion and “believing in yourself and communist ideals” ( like it’s now in the west, you should believe in yourself and be proud and promote liberal ideals without any God). However, I was born after fall of USSR, so that’s just my personal opinion
@AlinaMcleod

It was also connected to the fact that in the Soviet Union even the best university education was not just totally free but the state actually PAID you money while you were studying in some university or college (a rare case when "In Soviet Russia..." joke will actually be true). So it really made having a degree so common that person without it could ve been a bit of surprise. But on the other hand it seriously lowered the value of having a university education. Now the situation is slowly changing to the more Western practice.

One thing I noticed when I went to Russia is that Russians in general don't appreciate the superficially friendly way Americans (and Canadians) appear to be. It certainly seemed weird to me when we moved to the USA from England when I was 11. If you smile at a waitress or barista or provodnitsa in Russia they'll look at you like you're mad or developmentally disabled, and if you say "Have a nice day" most Russians just don't know how to process that.

Или например, если тебе американец улыбается, но при этом он не рад тебя видеть или не одобряет твоих действий, ты никогда не поймёшь, а стоит ли так снова делать. In Australia that sort of person is referred to by the terrm BOUGAN - [Boagan] and is used in the context that the person is 'a bit rough around the edges and less cultured than others.' Bougans are more inclined to consume U.$. media and be seen at the cinema watching 'Holywood Blockbusters' and american sitcoms, or 'trying to rap it like a 'hood' gangster.' It's pretty tacky. People here are very passive aggressive and fake. Make friends with other immigrants to stay sane, don’t be honest with anyone you don’t trust 100% who has proven to have your back. Elite Canadians are well travelled and nice. Young Canadians are so tolerant to your face because they are extremely intolerant behind your back and likely will be racist if you come from a culture of survival values. So be a good liar and find out if the person is liberal or conservative or NDP. Go to the website of those parties and watch the speeches of those party leaders. Ask them what they think of Trump and that you are open minded and won’t be offended either way. If they like him lie how he is the greatest. If they hate him lie how he is the devil. The better you are at lying and telling people what they want to hear instead of being honest the more popular you will be in Canada. If you have aspergers luckily psychiatrists are free and many psychologists are affordable and luckily weed gummy bears is legal as well as medication to help you stay sane in a country where lying and being fake is the greatest virtue.

I always enjoy your videos and your observations. As you know I am an American who has lived in Russia for 20 years and wanted to explain my view of the points you made. When discussing openness in the west, particularly in the US, the view is that they are very open to alternative lifestyles and views but in my travels, to 91 countries no place is more closed-minded and intolerant of differences of opinion as the US and to a little lesser extent Canadians. The concept of thought crimes or having wrong opinions renders a person blackballed in the US, even if the opinion is rational and well supported. Russians have opinions but they do not say yours are wrong, they do not judge others the way North Americans or Europeans do. If your Russian friend is of one vie they would never think less of you if you had another view on social topics. That open to others being different is a big plus for Russians, it is much easier to have friendships based on common interests because differences are not a factor at all. For example, the west thinks gays are repressed in Russia....since they never say Russian TV, sports or the arts to see how many people who happen to be gay are revered.....but having a personal opinion about one's own actions and preferences, unlike in the west, is not expected that others follow the identical thinking. IF you approached a person in Russia and said you were gay, they would have no reaction, because you are a different person so have your own views or behaviors. What they do resent, is when any social movement seeks to force others to internalize it. This whole thought crime concept is very western and is not part of Russian thinking. Your thinking is your thinking and all the Russian cares about when interacting with you is your character, not some label. That includes religion. The believers of all religions or non-faith freely interact and no one tries to convert anyone else. The most common religion is Orthodox but it is not a proselytizing religion so you might know someone well for years socially and it would never come up that they are religious. VERY few ever attend services, but more go for major religious events like Easter, Christmas is a minor religious occasion and has none of the western obsession with gifts and parties. I was dating a girl for 2 years before I found out she was religious, and only then with she said she would be gone for 2 weeks because she was going to a rural forest church to help with the gardens, cleaning, and cooking. If you do not ask directly, you would not know if they were Muslim(20% are), Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, or atheist. That is very Russian, it is personal and people respect personal choices. Education is taken VERY seriously in Russia.It is the primary responsibility of children so study comes before play, sports or recreation.I do not know anyone over 20 who does not have post-high school degrees. As ann employer, I never asked for it but never met an applicant who did not have a degree. Primary school is not the babying sitting as in the US but the breadth of subjects a 10-year-old has had would put American high school seniors to shame. Few work in their specialty but they are qualified for anything due to the wide range of subjects studied. The purpose of education is not just job, or even about job, but for having adults who are broadly educated and competent in all fields. An engineer who also does not know geography or literature is an uneducated person. A doctor who does not understand economics or art is a less competent adult. It is easy to find good employees because everyone you meet knows "stuff" and makes good decisions based on a broad understanding of the human condition. Dating! Yes, I love it here. I feel weird going back to the US and seeing what passes as relations between the 67 genders. It is a battlefield of hostility and eagerness to be offended..If I ask a woman out here in Russia, I know that even if she might not think I am her type, it will be a very pleasant sharing of time, and I know she will be polite very well-groomed and be a great conversationalist and be open for a wide variety of activities because of her broad interests. It is much easier to meet people here in Russia. If I want to meet any woman I see on the street or in a museum or opera, I know that if I am polite and have something interesting to say, I will be a gracious response. If there seems to be a mutual interest to continue the conversation another time, we simply exchange contact information. Simple and lacking stress. In the west judgment is passed by appearances or type of car driven well before a word was spoken and if a guy talked to a girl without her having evidence of his wealth or other superficial traits, the reaction would be extremely rude. I know from experience, when I would drive up in a Maserati and wear the right clothes, in California, there was a very different reaction to random attempted meetings than when walking in casual clothes or driving my 4x4. When it comes to traditional manners, they will be respectful of others and me, and not scream at me (which has happened to me several times back in California) because I quietly arrange for payment. The last American woman I went out to dinner and a gallery opening event screamed at me that I was usurping her power as a woman for paying the bill myself. She made a scene in a nice restaurant. I told that to another American woman and she thought she was in the right to blow up the evening due to my patriarchal attempt to disempower her. I was literally attacked by a woman who was trying to create a fight, I did not know her but she was asking me pointed questions about Russia and how it represses women a men force women to wear makeup, wear heels and dress up to please men. I just replied that there is a different view in Russia, where both men and women think men and women are different, equal but different. So each that enraged her and she took a large bowl of pasta and tomato sauce and dumped it over my head and ruined the party and my new suit. That was 12 years ago and as I hear it has gotten far worse. They do not understand actual equal rights. In Russia, no one thinks the fact that more businesses or universities are headed by women than men is due to some special treatment or set-asides or extra points given to females like in the west. /they assume the reason the woman is head of the department or corporation is simply that she was the best. Since men and women had fully equal rights for over 100 years it means there is freedom to be as they wish. /Women tend to emphasize their femininity and expect men to emphasize their masculinity. But I think those terms are not even understood in the west, they are too charged with ignorant political thinking. Relations between men and women are actually a lot healthier and pleasant here in Russia than the minefield of social interaction in the US where 35 million marriage-age men have given up and refuse to have any dealings with women in what they call the MgTOW movement that grows daily. Here, men and women actually like each other. The hookup generation does not exist here, sure there is sex, but it is not the crazy obsession for both sexes to have objective sex between strangers without bothering to find out the name of their target. I find Russia to be more genuine, open, less judgemental, easier to have true friends, easier to have friends and relationships with a much wider range of people since political views never seem to matter to partners, only one's character. It is hard to compare city attitudes in Canada to rural areas so you might find that the very liberal but biased views of Toronto are quite different from the views in the western cattle country of Canada or the fishing villages on the coast. I think you would have a more full life and lower stress if you simply moved here to Russia. I sense that you really like the depth and sincerity of Russian society and lack of stress. You fit in well and even look Russian, which for women means you look feminine, gracious and approachable. People value your character here and they could see it in you so you were accepted very well. I must say I am much more accepted here by all age and interest groups than anyplace I have ever been.

Russians know their history, Canadian's I'm not so sure. Russian education system is superior. Russians enjoy free healthcare, that includes dental and meds. Buying or building a home is much more affordable in Russia than in Canada.

@@mathlover4994 You can earn a lot of money in those countries if you are not going to spend them on house, health, education etc. Otherwise your expenses will leave you with very little. However some ppl are ready to rent most of their lives some crib with several roommates and to not care about a college education for their children but have a possibility to buy a nice new car or brand clothing that is much easier with larger paycheck. Different priorities.

I greatly enjoy your videos. I live in the center of the U.S. and had a varied working experience. I have found that if you remove the government and religious influence people are generally the same everywhere. Even with those influences they have the same basic needs. So this video confirms my beliefs. I would say that you have given me much greater insight into Russia, without travelling there, and a greater respect for the Russian people. Great video, thank you.
