I have a P400 in my H1, and had one in my last H1 as well. It is - without a doubt - the best 6.5 full stop. You mentioned the bottom end web girdle... all well and good, but it also has ceramic coated internals, forged crank and pistons, and MASSIVELY improved cooling passages in the heads. The metallurgy on them is the best you'll find in the 6.5's and it's just an all-around great engine. I'm pushing 16psi on my P400 with stock head bolts and it runs like a scalded dog.

Hi Jesse. Thanks for the vid, it was very helpful. I too have a 506 (installed in a modified Toyota), however the date code is F090, which I understand makes it a year 2000 casting. Would you know what vehicle it was likely originally installed in? The DB2 number points at a 94-97 van, but IPs come and go so... Also, I see Heath Diesel sell a main bolt kit especially for the 506. Apparently the 506 has 6 x 10mm bolts (instead of all 12mmm). They claim this leaves more metal in the webbing to help reduce cracking. Do you know of any discussion around this? And would you believe there are 506 likes on this video as I write this? 🤣
@JessePelkey19 ай бұрын
The 3/4 and 1 ton platform trucks ran the 90s chevy body style up into 2000, so so more than likely out of a truck, suburban or 3/4 or 1 ton van. To answer your question on the main bolt size, yes this is correct. A block that uses smaller main bolts does leave more material in order to prevent cracking, but unfortunately they do still crack.

Ive been looking to improve the mileage with some simple upgrades that won't break the bank! I was thinking the 4" exhaust would be best and cheapest to start with.
@JessePelkey13 жыл бұрын
Absolutely man, 929 blocks were not a bad block, they were more or less the middle of the road block. The 929s didn't have piston squirters which for some people make it more desirable then the 506 blocks. The 929 did suffer from the cylinder web cracking but not nearly as bad as the 506. All in all it is a great motor and block as long as preventative maintenance is kept up with 👍 There are definitely a bunch of mods to do to these trucks to improve the fuel milage and an exhaust is a step in the right direction for sure. Opening up the exhaust will alow the motor to "exhale" more efficiently, combined with an intake the motor will start working for you rather than fighting itself to do what you want it to do.
@dbrannon793 жыл бұрын
@@JessePelkey1 thank you :) I feel confident this motor will last me another 75-100k miles before it gives up the ghost considering the smoke thing I mentioned in your other video's comments. that gives me some time to find or possibly rebuild another motor. as for fuel mileage, I have been dancing around the idea of removing the vacuum pump as well since I've already done a "homemade" manual waste gate and there's no EGR. I've wondered if by just removing it will help any on increasing the fuel economy. my goal is to go from the 13 I get now to 16-18 mpg for everyday driving
@JessePelkey13 жыл бұрын
@@dbrannon79 definitely achievable man. One of the great things about these motors is that they do sip fuel and only get better even with small changes. I refer to the vaccume pump as a parasite, any extra load on the motor is essentially robbed horsepower and fuel economy. It may only be a little bit of difference in in both aspects, but with other contributing mods they really start to shine.

Basically I started looking at the optical sensor on a fuel pump that I had laying on the floor essentially what I think is some dirt got in from when I changed the fuel filter. Yesterday I tried cleaning out the fuel filter housing and I use my air gun to blow out the cavity and I think I might have blown some dirt in because now it's running worse. So I'm going to try disassembling the pump and flushing it out with some nice clean diesel and Brake clean and hope for the best. Any tips or tricks? Also because this is a block video is the 2000 Chevrolet HD 3500 a good block? I was told that they are. Also I tried looking down the harness to see if that resistor was there but I didn't see it . I also got that from your other video which I thought that would be my Smoking Gun LOL . And thank you for your time and knowledge. I know what a pain it is to edit videos and film them as I have my own channel.

My '95 Suburban K1500 with about 250k has a nasty habit. When driving at normal hughway speeds if I let off of the accelerator for more than a couple of seconds when coasting downhill on slowing down in traffic, the engine drops to idle and will not respond when I try to accelerate again. It continues to idle smoothly and the steering and brakes work fine, if just won't respond to the accelerator until I switch the key off and then restart. When it first started happening, I would pull off the side of the road and stop, then restart. Now I just shift to neutral then quickly switch off and recrank. I have replaced the PMD and relocated it to the front bumper and replaced the computer. Also, the cruise control does not work. Any thoughts?

How much does it cost to rebuild a 6.5 diesel
@JessePelkey13 жыл бұрын
That all depends on a few things honestly. But, a standard rebuild kit itself, with new bearings, pistons gaskets and o rings can run anywhere from $500 on the low end and up to $900+ on the high end if your crankshaft has any cracking on it you'll need a new one and that can be around $500+ and if the heads are cracked, its roughly $400 a head. If you do it yourself and shop around you can find some good deals for sure, I wouldn't skip on the quality though. You wouldn't want to redo it because a bad part failed. If you have a shop do it, they will tell you different prices based on the hourly rate of the shop. So if it just needs new bearings, rings, piston heads, gaskets and o rings you could do the job for right around $600 give or take.

Yeah funny I just went to the r/diesel forum and asked about a Workhorse p42 6.5 and someone said... "Lastly, the workhorse used the 506 block which is pretty much the worst Diesel engine ever made." It's actually 2004 so here you just said that those were 97-99?
@JessePelkey13 жыл бұрын
97 through 99 also had some 506 blocks for the pick-up trucks, my truck for example is a 97 and my old 98 both were equipped with 506 blocks. The 506 was knows as one of the weaker castings as far as the 6.5l motors due the metallurgy of the casting. Have also run into other 506 blocks other trucks in these years as well.

I have a hmmwv m1038 and these engines are ticking time bombs. Civilian models I believe are a little better and usually can easily make it past the 150,000 mark, I still havent seen a humvee or h1 hummer to make it over that mark. With that said, I hope to put a civilian 6.5 in it soon. I will pay you to do it for me lol
@JessePelkey14 жыл бұрын
Hmmwv's were definitely run hard, put away wet and weren't the absolute most reliable truckes ever made for sure haha. I also know a few friends that use to service them in the army and they were never 100% "done my the book" the swap would definitely be the first time I had ever worked on a hmmwv but it would be incredibly fun. That motor is buried in there with very little room to get at anything without removing a ton of crap out of the way😂

Just my two cents. NO! The 6.5 is not a big block that GM converted to diesel! Throw a 6.5 and a bbc on a stand ,side by side, and I dare you to tell me there the same block! Oh and it’s not a Duramax either! I’ve had the privilege of personally building all three engines (6.5, bbc, Isuzu Duramax) and can tell you that although you may find similarities. Their all completely different!!
@JessePelkey14 жыл бұрын
2 cents always appreciat man, and thank you for commenting. Like I said in the video i always forget shit and the comments section is open for everyone to help fill in the gaps 👍 like forgetting to mention when I started about offered hp and torque that the 6.5l is 395 cubic inches. I will definitely be doing more videos on the subject due to the fact there is a ton of info that would take way longer than one video
@That4.3Sierra3 жыл бұрын
Isuzu only helped build duramax’s until 2010. After that, GM took over fully

Wouldn’t most of the civilian 6.5s be electronic? ‘92-‘93 DB-2 mechanical injection. ‘94-‘00 DS-4 electronic injection. Military applications are still mechanical to this day.
@JessePelkey13 жыл бұрын
Yes, however injection pumps were not the focus of the video. Video was intended to go over the block differences specifically, saving the pumps for another video because I feel the differences between the pumps has enough info for a video all on their own👍

That's awesome man, welcome to the 6.5l world. I actually have a video for the fass 165 install where I go through how i installed it and some other fuel modifications that can be done. Of course from my truck to your truck there will be slight differences but the premise of the install is the same.

What are you talking about short block an long block.all 6.5 are same deck height to my knowledge.a short block is basically everything in the engine without the heads installed and long block is everything including the heads
@JessePelkey13 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I'm talking about, when buying a motor you can opt to buy either a short block, a long block or a complete. Figured I'd mention it in the video to spark interest if someone didn't know the difference when buying a motor and if someone wanted me to do a video on the difference I would.
