There's a difference between startled and scared. Like Connor said startled isn't the same as scared. It's just a sudden physical response to a sudden unexpected stimuli and it quickly dissipates. Scared is a mental/emotional feeling that isn't necessarily sudden. In fact, if it builds slowly with suspense it can become quite a powerful feeling of intense fear. No need for gore or anything sudden.

Demos were what was in walmart or local game shops. Or back when you could get the demo disks instead of going to conventions. Early access is fine but the nostalgia of going to a local game store and trying out games there was fun as hell as a kid.

Yeah... first arc of Higurashi is the most terrified an anime ever made me. Later arcs, you know a bit more of what's up, but that first arc was just peak paranoia fuel. Early episodes of Shiki worked like that too. Most "horror anime" is just yeah, whatever. The ghosts are all weird. In that matter, a non-horror anime had one of the most terrifying moments without anything serious happening. Aria the Animation, an episode where protagonist encounters a headless ghost lady. In most series, it wouldn't even be considered scary. But in Aria, it just works. Up until that point, most mysteries turned out to be either benevolent creatures or misunderstandings. So the "oh, wait, that is an actual ghost, and she is not friendly" came out of nowhere and really worked.

Horror is like Chili. both are related to someone enjoying something that is meant to cause a reaction in you and you can increase your tolerance by exposing yourself to little amounts at a time.

Horror just fully engages my fight or flight reflex, so I’m not scared but I’m sitting there unbearably tense.

There's only been 1 anime that has given me the spooks and that is perfect blue. No other anime has come anywhere close.

The horror game that got me was Dead Space. Specifically, that unkillable thing you encounter. I would be seeing that thing on my way to the bathroom at night. T.T

I love horror for a similar reason to penguinz0 because I don't get scared by horror and when horror is bad it is usually extremely hilarious but when the horror is good it's really good

Jumpscares are like the fart jokes of horror. Low effort, but could still be pulled off as to not make it cheap, and if you aren't funny that's all you can do lol. There's a difference between true terror that sticks with you long after you've experienced it and you making a loud noise and popping something up in my face in order to make my body jiggle for a second.

There is no movie that I have seen since I was a little kid that scared me. Now games on the other hand can still get me some times. When I first played RE7 it was pretty scary 😂

6:51 Honestly, I feel the same way when my friends come to my house to watch some Horror movies, movies including the Saw 😀 And I hate Saw, even though I've never watched it. I just hate the sheer violence of it and I'll never understand why people like seeing people get tortured and experiencing violent deaths 😭😭 Edited: Personally, I don't like Horror movies that are violent and unsettling but for some reason, I'm fine with Horror movies with paranormal because, though sometimes it's violent, at least it's by some invisible force than a weapon or trap 😅

So many things that are supposed to be scary just aren't scary for me. Movies like Blair Witch and The Descent scored a 0 on scary for me, I do not understand why people find them scary. My favourite horror movies of the past 10-15 years have all been more tense and disturbing than scary, such as Hereditary, Midsommar, and The VVitch. And I completely agree that jumpscares aren't being scared, it's just a reflex, a transitory fight or flight response. I could get jumpscared by a moth suddenly flying in front of my face from the side. I'm not scared of the moth, the impulse ends immediately.

I guess you're not claustrophobic when you said The Descent ain't scary........

@@mattbaltimore7195 Not even a little bit. I'm quite comfortable with enclosed spaces. Is that the extent of why people find it scary?
