The lesson I learned from Josh's Bad Monkey video wasn't "OMG I need a Bad Monkey!" it was more "most overdrives are close enough to be good enough so it doesn't matter".

@@commodoor6549 The original point of the JHS video was to show how cheap pedals can sound just as good as highly coveted pedals. He was more poking fun at all the beliefs people have. He knew the prices would rise, but probably not to the extent they did. I dislike JHS for lying about his Klon and Devi Ever clones as well as being associated with a homophobic church, but I don't think he made the Bad Monkey video to just raise the prices.

Its crazy, I bought my bad monkey for £20 brand new 10 years ago, no-one wanted them because they weren't "boutique" and weren't "true bypass" and they were "tone suckers". It's a decent overdrive with a very flexible eq that allows you to dial in a wide variety of tones. Josh's whole point wasn't that the Bad Monkey was exceptional, it was a comment about using what you have and exploring what it can do.

Lefty guitars: I’ve found companies fall in and out of love with making Lefties. When I started playing Gibson had a wide range of lefties (including my V). Then for a while all they had was a couple of Pauls, SG’s, and 335’s. Then in 2019 they started offering a lefties in most of their range- Explorer (that I bought), Firebird, SG special. Now they seem to be thinning down the lefty range again. Even PRS have runs of Lefties- I got a Lefty Ltd custom 22 in 2012 (and just found it came with a signed PRS back plate when it fell out of the case last year), and now they’re offering a bunch of different SE’s to order for this year including a 277 baritone.

@1:11:45 I’m a lefty who learned to play standard right-handed guitar. I think I’ve had things I’ve struggled with more than righties, but I’ve also had other things come easy that my righty friends struggled with. If people want a left-handed guitar, that’s fine, but Paul isn’t really wrong

I’m with you on this. I do most things left handed, but not everything. Learned to play guitar right handed because the people who taught me were. Could I be a better player today if I’d learned lefty? Hard to say. The learning opportunities would have been limited.

As for 3D printing, I LOVE Thomas Blug's Home Plate picks. Changed my life. Problem is, they are hard to get. If I can get them stateside, they are EXPENSIVE. My bass player's son has a 3D printer. He took a couple of those picks and 3D printed me a bunch in a few different plastics and let me try them. I have to say, one of those plastics got me really close, and the picks proved pretty durable.

VegaTrem is amazing! I have them on two PRS Guitars and would love a video about them from your channel. I have a Les Paul tribute in left handed configuration. It’s been driving me crazy, because the knobs are backward to the rest of my left handed guitars. This is the first Les Paul I’ve ever owned, so i don’t know if it’s a feature of left handed gibsons or not, but on this one, i have to turn the knobs the opposite direction as my Schecter, my mod shop strat, and my Wolfgang. Are there a lefty and righty potentiometer? If so, where do you recommend i go to get a ‘left handed’ set of volume/volume, tone/tone for Gibson Les Paul?

Voodoo Labs has a great modded tube screamer, as well. Not as cheap as the Wampler Triumph, but it's still pretty amazing. I don't understand the hive mentality regarding effects pedals. I guess some people simply want what's not easily obtained, regardless of what's actually better, or more affordable. It's kind of sad, because that's reflective of society as a whole.

John Browne had a good point about tone wood when discussing his new signature model. The wood might not change the tone. But it does change the way it feels when it vibrates against your body. Which is all part of a guitar "feeling perfect" to the owner.

It shows you don't need a $3000 pedal. Make the most of what you have and experiment with other effects / pedals / boards to see what you like. What did Hendrix have and he is and eternal LEGEND for what he did. SRV is another example. EVH first album? They didn't have Helix or Pod, etc.

My problem is the second hand market on other gear went nuts . The resellers started buying up everything at ridiculous prices. One guy in particular bought a uesd guitar for seventy dollars over new plus tax. And if this transfers over to new gear prepare for price increases. An this effectively priced me an others out of used gear at reasonable prices.

I have mixed feelings about the Cory factory On one hand, I’m pretty sure that my three Ibanez guitars were made there, and even after several years I’m impressed with how well they play, and they’re all entry level models On the other hand, when combined with big name instrument stores, they make it hard for small shops to compete and be profitable in the USA. Since you mentioned it, when is the guy at the shop down the street going to be done building my amp?😂

I'm on the fence. I do believe tonewood makes a difference, BUT I also believe that there IS such a thing as MOJO in a guitar. And, in a lot of cases, ANY guitar that ages for 20 yrs is going to sound more than decent. Case in point, I have a 1997/8 Epiphone SG Jr. that my bassist bought. It was a cheap model: bolt-on neck, ugly "TV Yellow," finish. But when I picked it up at a local shop, it SANG without even being plugged in. It played great. I ended up putting the same pickup in it as my beloved Gibson SG Jr. Reissue: Mojo Tone Hot Quiet Coil P-90. Does it sound and play as good as my Gibson? No. But, damn, it plays and sounds good enough to have a lot of fun with it!!

I got to spend about an hour with Paul Reed Smith. It was eye-opening. He is not only passionate about guitar, but about the SCIENCE and PHYSICS behind it. In some ways, he is like Bob Taylor in that he is always trying to "build a better mousetrap." The way he explained tonewood to me was this: you have the string vibration wave that travels from the nut/fret to the bridge. BUT, he said what people forget to factor in is that there is a TRANSVERSE WAVE that goes from the bridge to the wood and then travels BACK UP to the bridge, which the pickups also detect. Different woods affect that transverse wave, which, therefore, does have some effect on tone. The only thing I can say is this: I can pick up four different Epiphone electrics made from mahogany. Some, I can hear acoustically much louder than the others. On the others, all the acoustic sound is coming from the bridge, there is very little acoustic resonance from the body. So...... When I PLUG IN those guitars, the ones that were more resonant and loud acoustically sounded HEAD & SHOULDERS above the others. I find this a consistent experiment. I've had beautiful guitars that were acoustically dead, and I could never get them to sound good plugged in, no matter what pickups I put into them. I've also owned used guitars that were cheaper models, but were 20+ yrs old. Those always seem to sound better than decent, probably due to the age. This tells me that the wood is a factor. So, at least to me, Paul's logic pans out.
@honkytonkinson9787
@honkytonkinson9787 Жыл бұрын
I think that most people on the tone wood side of the argument are referring to certain types of tree, or to figured wood. I don’t hear much talk about the difference between quality lumber and bad lumber, and how it’s cut, with respect to electric guitar building; a little with acoustic guitar building I tend to believe that it doesn’t matter so much what type of wood a guitar is built out of as much as it matters what part of the tree the wood came from, and how the lumber was processed before it started becoming a guitar I also would like someone to test the reductive effect of the body of the guitar on the vibration of the string. Like you mentioned in your comment, I think that some guitar bodies probably suck tone, or vibration, out of the string, or might more subtly remove the better harmonic overtones from the sound. Add mediocre pickups and you have a bland experience. Good pickups can make a bad body sound better, but better to start with a good guitar body. Paul has probably identified qualities of wood that don’t interfere with vibration of a guitar string, or might even subtract unpleasant harmonic overtones PRS is sourcing the best of the best stuff, so he could probably make a guitar out of pine and basswood that would be killer!
@ldfox11
@ldfox11 Жыл бұрын
Tone wood makes little difference. Some people say pickups make little difference also. Just make some adjustment on the amp and pedal, problem solved. I think the feel of the guitar as you play it matters most.
