The senator was the only one who wanted to be truthful about what the boys did. He was willing to give up his career and everything. The The other couple planned to kill the other boy. Movie was way too long though.

It was so tedious and long. Paul was also insufferable. For the first 2/3 of the movie, I couldn't understand why his wife put up with him. The way that he went around calling out and judging all of society while his son is a whole murderer was wild. I also had to fast forward through that Gettysburg tangent. It took forever to get the actual point of the movie only to end it right when the resolution was due. Also, why was Beau outside, randomly, late and in the snow at the end?

You could hear him jump out the window or something when the housekeeper was telling at Paul.

What was the whole visit to Gettysburg and civil war about? Why did they need to prance out the dishes? I felt like the senator was the only one with some decency.

I liked it! It was crazy! It dealt with so many subjects. Everyone person in the family was mentally ill except for Beau. Didn't matter if it was by blood or marriage. I prefer movies that don't leave the ending open like this one did, but I could not stop watching until the end. Wasn't the best movie ever but it was hella entertaining!

Just so you all don't miss the point, first of all, Beau wasn't killed at the end (sigh of relief heard throughout the comment section). Secondly (and most importantly of all), Paul's final line of the movie is a sarcastic summarization of the import of the entire movie: "Mental health for all!" In other words, this sardonic portrayal of the two interwoven, dysfunctional families (as drawn out as it is) drives home the point that "mental illness" (on one level or another ... diagnosed or undiagnosed) can afflict EVERYONE!

I agree they did a horrible job of telling this story, especially since I hear the book is really good

Paul killed Beau that's why his wife called her son and said daddy took care of it. And I also heard Paul say something like I got the phones.

I thought it was awful and a waste of time. Despite the good performances, I didn't feel for any of the characters. The children were vile. The ending was just flat out terrible.

I though this had a good premise, but then that was it. Each character left the table to drag the story on more. Then side stories had nothing to do with the main plot. Insufferable main character. I can go on and on.

Movie sucked!! I was looking for something thought provoking to watch last night. Chose this movie based on the trailer. Got so invested that I had to finish it even though my gut was telling me to stop wasting my time. I wanted everybody to die except Richard Gere's character and the maitre d'. These people were awful. This movie was awful. Total waste of time.

If i recall it correctly, the father kinda had a mental breakdown and just flat out killed the kid who was gonna rat them out. They don't show it, but I felt like it was implied.

Actually the movie represents a lot of psychological and philosophical concepts that people go through every day. I'm not an academic but having read far and wide, it's interesting to see theory in "practice". Not to be disrespectful whatsoever, but I think your review is a bit shallow in that regard; the movie always having "downer" moments...well, yeah, it's the plot. Not every movie can or should be the same. However, I do agree with you when you said the movie was all over because at times, it really was. Btw, I honestly think Paul killed Beau; Not taking his medication being mentioned toward the end of the dinner, "take care of Beau", etc.

No offense taken. This is partly why I stopped making reviews. There were times where I hated a movie on the first watch and then loved it the second time around. I felt like I needed to get reviews out ASAP. I appreciate your explanation and feedback! I should rewatch the movie…this single review seems to be my most popular and decisive review on my channel.

@@hanz101don’t give in to intellectual terrorists. The person snowballed you with fluff and no actual point…just like the movie…it had no actual point. Or ending. Next time, tell a person like this to pound sand.
