My brother introduced me to this absolute gem of a comedy, since he’s a fluent French speaker since he learned it in high school. In 2001, my 2 best friends and I were hanging out my bro’s apartment/flat and we were planning on going out play LAN games at a cyber cafe or go to the movies. I saw the copy of the Dinner Game sitting there and I just threw it on and told my friends to check it out. None of us speak a lick of French but the subtitles were there for us to understand. It started off a little slow since that is kind of how the movie starts, but when Piñon in came in at full force they stared paying attention. 5 minutes turned into 10. 20 minutes turned into 40 and my buddies who have NEVER seen a French movie were captivated by it. They were laughing HARD…..it was impossible to not laugh at all the interactions and cluelessness of Piñon was (like the scene where he explains that his friend’s name is Just LeBlanc and not just LeBlanc lol and he has that stupid but funny look on his face.) They had a blast. They got all super quiet at the end when he has that conversation with the wife and it gets serious. And BOOM….the end hits and they’re laughing their asses off again. After they left my brother was so satisfied. He was like: “damn I didn’t think they would want to watch that. That’s so cool that they sat through the whole movie.”

You are right at 6:43: "Could things get any worse?..." They do, and in the funniest way possible... I watched this film many years ago, at a friend's recommendation. It was funny then, and it would got better. I am glad that an english-speaking reviewer is interested in french films. All the best!

I absolutely LOVE this film - I’ve watched it more times than I can recall. It’s by far my favourite French comedy, if not indeed my favourite French film. ‘The Closet’ is indeed an absolute corker too, I would thoroughly recommend that Francis Veber film, as well as ‘The Valet’ (Le Doublure), which stars Gad Elmaleh as the François Pignon character. PS - and speaking of the Pignon character… his first name is pronounced ‘Fron-swah’, not ‘Francis’. Tres bon. C’est ça. 😊

Didn't see the American version. It looks like a typical American movie with some stupid and idiotic humor with unrealistic stories. French movies are different, in that they look realistic to real life while still being funny.
