The Dinosaurs of Path of Titans Have an Identity Crisis

This is a video that I honestly wasn't sure that I would get through with finishing. This is very much an opinion and I'm worried of people thinking I'm nothing but a sourpuss. But with feedback with my friends and other members of the community, I've been encouraged to release. Hope you can see where I'm coming from.

I'm fine with the designs not being completely accurate, I've come to expect it and I'll do that myself. But there does come a point where it becomes dumb. I was legitimately interested in pycno as a large 3.3t abeli (nearly 4t if you scale it to a spec. adult size) but the lead dev photoshopped horns onto the silhouette and turned it into a carno, one of the cringest things I've seen in a while. The roster size wise would have been fine if they planned it from the beginning, but since half of them are paid for and weren't planned, there is a lot of overlap. Like seriously, what is mirigaia going to do that you couldn't just give to kentro or stego?

Honestly if I made one of these games, I’d name all the dinosaurs dubious genus names like Tyrannosaurus rex being Dynamosaurus Imperiosis or make a chimera of several dinosaurs in the same group(closely related) like Spinosaurus Chimerus. Another idea is to use fragmentary dinosaurs so you can fill in gaps with realism and imagination.

I feel like the thal is suffering in preparation for one of the other official flier of the game, hatzegoptertyx, which i feel is more 'famously' a bludgeoning, frightening azhdarchid. some of this can be 'fixed' with the planned battle system update in my opinion, but as path of titans stands... well, like you said, i exclusively play on community servers. its gameplay loop is generally broken atm- the idea of questing, in theory, is understandable. you want players to move around and be more likely to encounter one another. but the map is still just way too big for its server size, and without passive growth, moving from one area to another feels like wasting time. plus, without nesting, adult dinos basically serve no purpose but to walk around and hope you can pick a fight with somebody. as an Adult With A Job(tm) not losing an entire dinosaur to death makes path of titans the most preferable for the time and mental energy i have. i've just accepted all dino games have Problems and i have to pick my battles, lol.

Since Pycno got added to the game, now I how annoying it's to have a obscure dino you like only for it to be misunderstood with a famous relative. Now it's doesn't bother me too much that Pycno in game is basically a copy of Carno, but every time I play as a Pycno, I will always pick up P.imperator, which is the only one that doesn't look like Carno (and just like I said when it was first added, I have nothing against Carnotaurus, but I hate that Pycnonemosaurus in game is just a Carnotaurus with a different name. And the "but they're from the same family" is a stupid excuse, because lion and tiger are from the same family, but they do look different from each other). Man, I swear if I get to know how to make mods for this game, I will remake Pycnonemosaurus.

These are all valid critiques for the game tbh, but I noticed the devs do moderate accuracy nowadays (which is better than none at all) . The point you mentioned, "the ability to be unique was right there and they didn't take it" is so strong. This game could benefit from more abilities that make these playable more intriguing and there's def hope for that

When making a dinosaur product, in general, you need each dinosaur to have a unique feature not only in appearance, but also in playability, so that not everything is the same. Example, they could put Tyrano as a devastating predator but weak with large prey like Brachio, but instead would be an Acrocanthosaurus, which with its bite would rend and inflict more damage on large animals, but would be weaker than the rex.

Animal/Dinosaur games should be the f*cking easiest thing to balance in the entire universe. Like bro, It's already balanced for you! Just learn how the probably acted/interacted and (logically) fill in the gaps. Stegosaurus and Allosaurus are already a balanced matchup, because they co-existed, they had to be. Same goes for Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops, or Dasp and Lambeosaurus. Just choose you're dinosaurs wisely, choose ones that co-existed and you're good.

Dinosaurs often feel empty and boring. The easiest way in my opinion to fix this, is by giving them more than 2 basic damn needs. Real animals aren't eating, drinking and fighting robots. They need insulation, ways to cool off, sleep, rest and in general it takes a lot to maintain yourself. Should be the same for these games, This distracts players from KoS'ing, griefing and being annoying, whilst also feeling like you actually have to play the game. Kills two birds with one stone essentially.

ive played all three religiously, and i still think evrima is the best out there. especially after the new update. It's combat feels rewarding and the diet system makes sense to accelerate growth time. it doesnt matter what you play as, if you're skilled you can make it on evrima. POT no matter what server i play seems to be this giant carno moshpit or carebare simulator. always groups of 10+ different species dino's hanging out at the local hang spot on each map. Its really unimmersive.

Honestly, I was on the fence about getting POT because I could very much tell they were trying to go very "Legacy Isle" in concept, but when they released Thalassodromeus and it was just a knockoff BOB/Isle Ptera hybrid that pretty much decided for me I don't want the game. If they aren't willing to try and come up with their own playstyles in concept, the game is really just riding off the tailwinds of BOB and The Isle. If you're going to pick an animal with a well known behavior, either real or theorized, and just ignore that, why even pick it? It's not even like they were "subverting expectations", because they just went and turned it into the thing that Pterosaurs are normally known for.

Thal can do exactly what it did irl in game, it also has gotten a wave of land based abilities, thal is the generalist flyer, the middle ground between hatz and rhamp, anyone who complains about thal not being able to 1v1 the mid tiers need to rethink why they even bother bringing up the fact that it had the strongest known bite force of pterosaurs despite already knowing what it did with that bite force.

I wish we could just get ONE accurate dinosaur game! The isle had a great opportunity with their Evrima remaster but they wanted to cash in on the Jurassic Park designs instead, path of Titans is just bad and Saurian is pretty much dead because it hasn’t had an update in 7 years, and even then it’s not entirely accurate. At the moment we’re just looking at Ark II which although not meant to be accurate, has the most accurate depiction of a dromeosaurid since prehistoric planet. And the most accurate sabertooth depiction of any prehistory media!

I do plan on eventually trying to make a game with accuracy being the sole focus. But if it does happen, don’t expect it for like a decade. Especially since I’m still (at least what I would consider to be) a junior palaeontologist in training (although I have been studying for 16 years)

@@charchadonto for some things like spinosaurus that is true, but our understanding of tyrannosaurus has not changed much apart from being stockier and having lips since 1999 and saurian had a lack of support early on, a development team of only 2 and started making the game before attempting to get funding, along with infrequent updates, bad graphics, not a very good plan for future development and it didn’t even have accuracy as it’s top priority. The Tyrannosaurus was inaccurate it’s time along with the dakotaraptor. And they were apparently planning on implementing an ability based system like Ark. which worked for Ark because it’s not based on accuracy. It didn’t work for saurian.

I really can't give a shit about Thalassodromeus with it being a Pteranodon clone, but if it turned into a more accurate or at the very least more mainland based animal it will make me much more interested in playing it.

The least they could do is split them into different combat categories e.g; power, DoT or hybrid kinda like legacy Isle. I think they kinda have a thing going with the ability to choose defense, speed etc but its super bare bones and would love to see it shine more like mmo's (I could go on a tangent...). I feel like there's not much you can do if you're taking an archetype e.g; anky being a tank and making ano mimic that playstyle because in the end I feel like players will rag on it either way. They're gonna brush it off as "just another anky like all the other games" or "oh look anky in disguise". Like what do you even do with the dino's identity at that point? Make it a tank or innovate and turn it into something of a hybrid, CC/displacement creature? The game has so much potential... I just wish the skillsets weren't so generic & bland.

Thalassodromeus is strange to me. It has the stats of a smaller dinosaur - why not simply make it the right size? As for its role in the game? I have no idea what they were going for. Without other fliers to contextualize its place it is a glorified spectator in most cases. I think the single thing I find most distracting in the game is that facts are changed about a dinosaur (like the Bars, Met and Ank) when one could simply find a dinosaur of the appropriate size and quality to put in the game and it would be a better game for it effort. It is a shame that the design philosophy seems to be, "Change a dinosaur to meet the desired gameplay." Rather than, "Find a dinosaur to meet the desired gameplay." It isn't a hard task. Kaiwekia should be a herbivore. Why not? I see no logic here except that they wanted to add an aquatic predator. There are plenty of examples of Aquatic predators - put them in the game and it will be a more immersive and enjoyable experience, and we might even be able to argue there is some educational value to the game.

@@tommygarrosh2941 That's a fair observation. I think my point still stands given that the Thal doesn't have more than a few proto-feathers. Birds are smaller than they appear because the feathers offer additional visual weight without much actual mass. We don't have many bats in my country so I don't have any personal experience with that animal. Additionally, the Thal is imagined in the game to be an aquatic animal that dives for prey. From what I understand, most birds that do this tend to be heavier boned simply to allow for the impact and stress of diving several metres below the surface. Maybe I'm wrong, but the Thal simply seems oversized to me.

I remember Achero and Armin talking about this years ago when the roster was slowly been anounced and Achero had fliped because of the miss oportunity for Australo to be in a game XD . Fun times, I must admit I never had thought about some of the issues these animals in particular have aside from Kaiwhekea , Thalaso and Pychno to a degree. Tho I will say the issue I have with the latter 2 is the fact that they dont start out with the "base default" one been Carnivore ground hunting Thalaso and base Pychno looking....like Pychno and not discount Carno. But yeah aside from the issues mentioned here, in terms of moded ones I think there alrightish, tho Primordeal Tyrant ones are in my honest opinion THE best no ofense to other mod teams out there (discounting the Noviana has too many abilitys) Giga is great to play as an Apex, Para can ACTULLY defend it self pretty darn well, its insaine and rightfully so for such a large animal and Argent. For once a sauropod is the imovable mountain it should be. Once your adult nothing can touch you, and most attacks basically one shot everything,especially the stomp which while hard to aim does like 9000 damage. The Deinosuchus mod is pretty neat to even if its just Sucho with a few extra stuff. Cant wait to see the Quetz mod be availabe looks great from the previous

I agree with Metri, Thalasso and Pycno...but I disagree with Kaiwhekea and Anodontosaurus, Kaiwhekea never was a Filter feeder, but instead a normal plesiosaur, Anodontosaurus I see the problem, but I can't see a way to make him unique but balanced at the same time, so they picked the easier way to balance him instead of making something unique but at the same time very complex to balance.

Although The Isle does do Dinos very well, being as the mechanics are detailed and intrinsic to each Dino (not hot buttons), the PoT does pump out the playables at a high rate which gives players a lot to play with, the Isle being a hard core survival with perma-death can be frustrating for many, Pot being mmorpg/survival lite is far more accessible to casual players which is nice

The subadult specimen is already bigger than carnotaurus at 2.5 tons, with fragmentary remains likely belonging to an adult that suggest a size double that. Easily the largest abelisaur by a wide margin.

It’s sad seeing that this is an issue with path of titans because the devs have shown since nearly the beginning their ability to make their playables something more than the bland isle like playables with almost no variety in gameplay other than inherent ones that come with size (evrima seems like it’s looking to rectify this which is good but they still have a long way to go) the example of this that always comes to my mind when I think about this topic is concaveonator. It literally looks like it would be doomed to be pushed into the bland “4-6 ft tall theropod” category since it’s design is generic in every way but the weird dorsal fin like growth on its spine. Except the path of titans devs didn’t do that, they instead went with the ambitious concept of a dinosaur that becomes semi aquatic later in life and isn’t garbage on land (in its own weight class, it’s not soloing rexes or anything stupid like that) and they got this idea from its name which partially means “shark tooth” (haven’t looked up the exact translation yet) this is basically creative gold and spared concaveonator from being a generic playable that had no place in the game outside of being an obscure dinosaur. So glad they haven’t left concaveonator behind when updating megalania (the other playable that later in life becomes semi aquatic) to be more effective in water in the current ptb, because he is basically the symbol of what path of titans aims to achieve with it’s playables in terms of varying playstyles in even the same species of dinosaur in some cases (like again, concaveonator, because most concaveonators ether spec into full aquatic mobility builds or full dps builds with dive as an escape option) Path of titans devs, get your shit together again, please.

Path of Titans is fun but I feel like if it holds up it will probably be moreso thanks to mods and unofficial servers than anything else, ngl. I guess they might become more than a Primal Carnage Freeroam server with PvP and nutcollecting minigames eventually, tho. Also, because I feel like it, have some Path of Titan roster predictions: Tlatolophus (with two long-crested variants) Velafrons (big) Barbaridactylus (Nyctosaurus, Pteranodon, and PP variants) Anzu (designated egg thief) Prenocephale Siroccopteryx (large aerial hunter) Eoabelisaurus (They accidentally copied The Isles Rugops before they could notice that it is useless and does nothing) Ankylosaurus

Agreed, but atleast mods and private server customization relieve this issue quite a bit, which is more than you can say for any other game of the genre. Also out of place, but I think you should definitely do a Prior Extinction tier list. If not now at the end of the year, it may unironically be one of the best animal survival games out there, through it still has its own issues.

@alexsookhoo9919 That's fair; it's still very much a WIP project, and being on roblox certainly has its limitations, not to mention it can be fairly hard to start out with. Through the amount of progress they've made in only a year is astonishing, and I think given another year will genuinely be comparable to the big steam games of the genre but free (they also rebalanced the game recently so smaller animals are more viable)

Path of titans is a extremely flawed game and the designs range from bad to questionable and just straight up lazy! But it has its merits! Like people say path of titans is gonna be the first of the big three to die or whatever but tbh that couldn’t be further from the truth! The game has a strong modding community that will keep it a flout even if official development stops! And the game is actually really beautiful and runs really well! And combat is pretty neat! Not perfect but definitely better than the isles! INFACT!! I think path is a game we’re it’s much easier to learn how combat works and is forgiving enough we’re u can actually get good at the game! And the fact u don’t have to completely start over every time u die allows more room for improvement and to better hone your skill! The isle fails in every conceivable way with trying to teach u it’s combat! In the isle it’s very easy to die especially if ur inexperienced! And losing hours of growth can be very unmotivating and puts a time gap until u reach your full potential as a certain creature so u can try again! So overall path of titans has its merits and I’m excited for its future! A lot can be improved like questing and in general the herbivore and pack biased the game has and growth on officials. But still out of the big three path has become my favorite! With bob only being in last place because I could never get into and actual server unfortunately and had to refund it 😔

the game wont be dead yea I can agree with that and its really fun to play... sometimes but the thing with POT that is super anoying is the fact that one person complains about a tiny thing like "____ is too strong you need to nerf it" and its always anoying because ether they don't really change anything about the animal or they make it so trash its almost not even fun to play anymore for example the t. rex and dasp situation on the other hand we have a creature that is a tyrant that is the strongest thing in the game (if mods are not included) that runs almost as fast as allo and on the other hand we have a tiny much weaker rex that almost no one plays anymore because its only slightly faster than rex.

annoyingly rex was never planned and was just added in console release to please the 7 year olds and die hard jurassic park fans. its introduction made dasp obsolete, it could do more damage, it could tank more hits and in a pinch could even outrun a iguanodon. really don't know what they were thinking. Good news is in the PTB metri got a revamp to have rapid fast strikes and a slower venom bite along with basically a thorns hide, it doesn't do much to help but its something to differentiate itself from the rest of the roster.

Yeah i do agree with your points and i can see rather clearly some dinos ingame have been changed to make it more balanced some more then others you put barsboldia at 6.5 tons in the video while ingame it has 7 thats not such a big deal spinosaurus has 7 while irl it had betwene 7 and 8 so also just a bit but t Rex has been down scaled a lot in game he has 7 tons but irl astimates are around 10 tons Yes i know theres ppl who hate that its so strong in games and all but it was the largest land carnivore based on weight with the most powerful bite in the whole world need to give him some credit also im not saying it needs a buff just saying how it would be if path of titans made it fully acurate

While I agree with most of this, the Rex is the most powerful is not true. It’s one of the most powerful in Path. But a good Eo or a decent Ano can easily put a Rex down. Hell I’ve done it before on my Ano, and have gotten away from a pack of 4 Rex’s and a Spino because of Ano. While saying that Ano is also surprisingly balanced, it’s a defensive powerhouse that’s supposed to deter you from attacking it. There’s a couple problems with it but the main thing is that Rexy, while it has a say in the top of the roost, she doesn’t rule it.

While I disagree about how most the dinos are just dinos from the isle, can't have a dinosaur game without stego anky rex and spino after all, I can however agree that most dinos are redundant or given a stupid purpose that's either overshadowed or doesn't make sense like metris venom. Many dinos have a trope that they get overshadowed in and there's little to no reason using the worse one over the better one, an example is trex and dasp. Both bone breakers but dasps all over the place stats and smaller stature along with worse attacks as apposed to trexs amazing stats and tall stature with much better attacks makes playing dasp worthless. Most dinos just copy another to be unique with their name like ano and pycno. Those dinos should just be renamed I'd rather a popular dino that's accurate to it's irl self vs an unpopular dino that's more accurate to a popular dino than itself

The "knock off ___" has always annoyed me. It's not a knock off. It is literally another dino of the same family. They are found in different regions or time periods. Making you learn about more dinos than just the basic ones we all know and love because literally every form of media use them (T-Rex, your basic Trike, Anky, etc.)... and the Rex actually wasn't even a planned dino for the game. Someone paid them to put the Rex in the game. I honestly found this pretty cool, as it took me back to googling these dinos and learning more about them. I wouldn't be doing that if they were just the basic dinos. They even advertised the Pycno specially to their Brazilian players because it was found in Brazil. The game is in development, and EVERY dino is being revamped with new abilities to give each dino their own niche. What we have currently is only a placeholder. I imagine every dino just about will be getting reworks, given they spoke about needing to redo animations for better hitboxes/attack localization. In terms of deign; they also never claimed to be going for a 100% realistic depiction of these dinos, and have noted they will take some liberties (i.e. horns on pycno I think is a common one?)

The problem with Pycno is that it’s not even taking inspiration from carno. It just straight up is carno. They took carno’s identity and now pycno doesn’t have any of its own. It’s just the carno lookalike (when it didn’t look like carno in life in the first place)

Path of Titan indeed does have its praises and issues. As a paleo-accurate dinosaur lover, this game earns my respects for it and its plethora of species. However some of its species are illogical on stats and niches. Like Alioramus having 400 health while a smaller, lighter animal like Raptors having 500 health? I get it's to balance them out, but no, it's health should be based on its respected weight.

There's one very notable difference in between these games and it's how the community interacts with their devs. See when the isle makes a mistake, when the isle releases something half way broken, their player base is ready to rip them in to pieces. But when PoT releases something unplayable, unfun and insanely unequipped to exist in the game ( amarga...kai...) the community is ready to stand in defense of their devs...to a fault. I love both of these games very much, they are entirely different experiences. But I'm tired of seeing "pot good, isle bad" just repeated constantly. Neither is perfect, but the other is held to a higher standard.

And yeah, I do agree that some dinosaurs have been kinda forced into roles that more popular ones are in. Eotriceratops is of course going to be the generic Triceratops of the game cause it has Triceratops in the name. Barsboldia is, as I can agree with, oversized compared to what it’s believed to be as sized. T.rex of course is in the game cause people just want T.rex when we have Daspletosaurus among other stuff that you have said Scanova. I just hope when the combat update comes, many of the dinosaurs will have niches different from one another but we know thats going to take a while.

Agree to disagree. PoT models are (mostly) quite nice and (mostly...) accurate, but Isle makes them feel much more real and is generally a more immersive experience. But then again, while I prefer the gritty, challenging survival aspect and immersion over repetitive questing and little to no penalties for dying with copy-paste playables and abilities, I understand others prefer to just play casually without having to pay full attention at all times. To each their own!
